Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "West Wing" episode 55: "100,000 Airplanes". What lofty ambition almost makes it into the President's State of the Union speech?

Answer: A cure for cancer

In this episode we also meet Sam's ex-fiancee, Lisa, who is a journalist brought in to write a background story on the State of the Union speech. Despite the fact that a cure for cancer never makes it into the speech, the public reaction turns out to be better than expected, including a response to polling that Bartlet is 'trustworthy'.
2. "West Wing" episode 56: "The Two Bartlets". In this episode, Josh plans to take his new love interest to Tahiti. Do they end up going on the trip in this episode?

Answer: No

Josh puts work first (as he often does) and postpones the trip with Amy. However, in a very endearing scene, he recreates an island atmosphere in his apartment to make it up to her.
3. "West Wing" episode 56: "The Two Bartlets". Sam meets with a US Space Command officer who has a very interesting conspiracy theory about Fort Knox. What does he believe it to contain?

Answer: Alien spacecraft

Robert Engler (played by Sam Lloyd) is the US Space Command officer, making a return appearance. His original appearance was part of 'big block of cheese day' in season 1 when he suspected a UFO cover-up. He believes that the gold that has been taken out of Fort Knox must have been replaced by something.

In the end Sam plays along and tells him he can't possibly let Robert audit Fort Knox due to security restrictions (implying that there really is a conspiracy going on).
4. "West Wing" episode 57: "Night Five". The episode title refers to the President receiving professional help with something that's been wrong for the past four nights. What is his issue?

Answer: Insomnia

President Bartlet has had trouble sleeping for the past four nights. Dr. Stanley Keyworth, who helped Josh with his trauma after the shooting, is brought in to assess Bartlet. Keyworth is not told why he's there until the President arrives, and is also puzzled by the fact everyone keeps asking him if he knew anyone on the plane.
5. "West Wing" episode 58: "Hartsfield's Landing". Who does President Bartlet say he believes will run for president one day?

Answer: Sam

Bartlet gives a chess board to both Sam and Toby in this episode, and we see some very interesting bonding between each pair. At the end of the episode, just before he wins the match against Sam, Bartlet tells him that he believes in him and he should be confident about running.
6. "West Wing" episode 59: "Dead Irish Writers". In this episode we find out that Donna's place of birth is now technically part of which country?

Answer: Canada

In an amusing set of events, Donna suddenly loses her US citizenship due to the redrawing of borders, which naturally causes her to experience a range of security issues in the White House. The Canadian national anthem plays at the end of the episode to tease her. At the same time a celebration is being held for the First Lady's birthday.
7. "West Wing" episode 60: "The U.S. Poet Laureate". Which character reveals that he has a crush on the U.S. Poet Laureate?

Answer: Toby

Tabitha Fortis, the Poet Laureate, wants to criticize the government over its stance on land mines. Toby steps up and offers to talk to her; CJ realizes that he is doing this primarily because he wants to meet her. Meanwhile, the President makes an apparent gaff when he makes negative remarks on the radio about the Republican's presidential nominee (Governor Ritchie). We find out at the end of the episode, however, that he did this intentionally in order to make the debate about the intelligence of each candidate.
8. "West Wing" episode 61: "Stirred". What four words does President Bartlet use to explain why he wants John Hoynes to stay on the Democrat's ticket for the next election?

Answer: "Because I could die"

Hoynes becomes aware that there is discussion about replacing him, but Bartlet makes the final decision. In an interesting side discussion, Josh jokes about putting Leo forward; a role he eventually takes on in the following election alongside Matt Santos.
9. "West Wing" episode 62: "Enemies Foreign and Domestic". Which character becomes emotional and speaks out about an incident in Saudi Arabia to the press?

Answer: CJ

CJ responds to an incident where dozens of girls from a Saudi Arabian school are killed in a fire because they were asked to leave due to being 'inappropriately dressed'. Her remarks are not received well by some, and she even receives a death threat.
10. "West Wing" episode 62: "Enemies Foreign and Domestic". A letter arrives from someone who says he met the President after a budget speech in Pittsburgh. It turns out the letter is old and was addressed to a previous president. Which one?

Answer: Franklin D. Roosevelt

The letter is about 70 years old, but was lost because it was addressed to the President's private zip code. In a touching scene, the author of the letter, now an elderly man, is invited to the White House for a photo with Bartlet.
11. "West Wing" episode 63: "The Black Vera Wang". After Josh brings back a present of Moose meat from Finland, what happens to it?

Answer: Someone tries to sell it on ebay

Donna gives it to an intern, who puts it up on ebay, which is very much against the White House rules. The more serious element to this episode follows CJ and her stalker, who continues to make threats to her safety.
12. "West Wing" episode 64: "We Killed Yamamoto". In this episode, Donna goes to North Dakota to discuss why the party caucus wants to remove 'North' from their state's name.

Answer: True

Sam sends Donna on his behalf, giving them the basic message that the White House won't be getting involved with this issue. She notes that the issue is 'not ripe for national attention', despite the group believing the word 'north' makes them sound 'cold, snowy and flat'.
13. "West Wing" episode 64: "We Killed Yamamoto". Which country does defense minister and terror suspect Abdul Shareef come from?

Answer: Qumar

Qumar only exists in the world of "West Wing." Shareef has been found to be plotting terrorist acts, and the President has a dilemma because Shareef is due to visit the White House soon. He and Leo eventually decide to go ahead with the visit so as not to arouse suspicion and give them more options as to how to deal with him.
14. "West Wing" episode 65: "Posse Comitatus". In an eventful finale to season 3, which of the following events does not occur?

Answer: Debbie Fiderer has her first day working for Bartlet

The season 3 finale lived up to the quality of its prior seasons, with drama for several of the characters. The President decides that he must assassinate Shareef to save American lives, but due to the nature of it, it has to be done outside of the country. Shareef's plane lands in Bermuda (purportedly due to engine trouble) and he is gunned down as he exits the plane. Debbie Fiderer meets with the President in this episode, but it does not go very well.
15. "West Wing" episode 65: "Posse Comitatus". What phrase does Governor Ritchie use that prompts Bartlet to decide he really wants to beat him?

Answer: "Crime. Boy, I don't know"

"Crime. Boy, I don't know" was Ritchie's reaction to the news that CJ's bodyguard, Simon Donovan, had been shot and killed trying to stop an armed robbery. Bartlet accused Ritchie of the zen-like disengagement. While Ritchie called Bartlet (among other things) Hollywood, weak, liberal and untrustworthy, this didn't bother Bartlet as much as the crime comment, and he had no problem relating this to the Republican nominee.
