When the opening credits rolled, you could see that Bobby Roth was credited with directing this episode of "Lost." For the first five seasons of the show, Roth directed a total of two episodes. The flashbacks, in this episode, centered around Ben while he grew up and it first began when he was born to his mother, Emily Linus, and to his father, Roger Linus. This was an unusual birth since Emily gave birth to Ben in the middle of the woods and not in a hospital and she was several miles outside of Portland, Oregon. Emily bled intensively, after the birth, and she told her husband to name the baby Ben and she died on the roadside.

We continued to see flashbacks, of Ben as a young child, and it was when he was age seven that we learned Ben was at the island, with his father, to work for the DHARMA Initiative. When they got to the island to work on it, they were greeted by Horace Goodspeed, the man who took Ben and his father to a hospital when Ben was born. Sterling Beaumon portrayed the young Ben in flashbacks in this episode.

In parts of the flashbacks, a young Ben was seen attending school, on the island, and he began a friendship with a young girl named Annie. There was one day when both Annie and Ben were attending a lesson on volcanoes and the school was attacked by natives on the island.

However, both Annie and Ben were not seriously injured from the attack. Madeline Carroll portrayed Annie in this episode of "Lost."

We continued to see flashbacks, of a young Ben, and he saw a vision of his dead mother so he was freaked out by it and began to run into the jungle. When he did, he encountered Richard Alpert, who was believed to have been one of the natives who attacked the school that Ben attended. Richard encouraged Ben to not be afraid and he asked him if he was lost, to which Ben said he was not and he was looking for his mother.

We now saw the adult Ben and it was his birthday so he was at the barracks and helped his father load a car. Ben mentioned to him that it was his birthday and he realized that his father had forgotten. Ben's father promised him they would do father and son things once they finished their work for the day.

Ben and his father got to talking about Ben's mother and Ben asked his dad if he blamed him for his mother's death. He did not answer Ben and he promised Ben that he would remember his birthday for the next year. Ben snapped and was fed up with all the years of neglect, from his father, so he locked his father into the car he helped load, filled it with gas, and this killed his father.

Once we got to scenes on the island, John was seen carrying his father, on his back, and he stopped off to speak to Ben. He informed Ben that he had found out that the true leader of The Others was someone named Jacob. Locke said he wanted to go find Jacob but Ben told him not to since he felt it was impossible for them to find Jacob at that point.
