Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scenes it is Friday night dinner at the Gilmore house. Which of these is a "gross out" food mentioned by Lorelai?

Answer: road kill

The conversation on "gross out" foods began because their entree was escargot. Lorelai was not interested in snails. She said if she even tried them, and then the main course was road kill, she'd be out of her allotment of gross out foods for the day. Richard swore that "they" would taste like garlic and butter, which alarmed Lorelai.

She said, "Don't say 'they', our food should not have pronouns."
2. Emily had a dear friend named Sweetie Nelson who passed away. What was Sweetie's real first name?

Answer: Melinda

Lorelai pressed Emily to reveal the story behind her nickname of "Sweetie". Emily argued that there was no story, just the fact that Melinda was a very sweet woman who happened to love escargot. Sweetie had experienced a long illness, so her death was not totally unexpected. Richard wanted to skip attending the funeral, as he and Jason had a business date with a man on Sunday.

It was an afternoon of golf and lunch. Emily let him off the hook, but she seemed extremely sad and lonely when she did so.
3. Doyle accused Rory of plagiarizing a paper for the 'Yale Daily News'.

Answer: True

He said that a couple of common phrases she used, "small band of followers" and "rain soaked highway", were possible plagiarisms. She argued they were common phrases, so common that they were not even cliches. He was paranoid about scandal at the paper, and cited Stephen Glass and Jayson Blair during his paranoid rant.
Doyle was played by former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" cast mate Danny Strong. Danny played Jonathan Levinson, nerd turned super villain, on "Buffy" for seasons 1-7, and reappeared as a vision of the First in season seven as well.
4. Who did Doyle NOT want to play him in the movie on the 'Yale Daily News' scandal?

Answer: Tobey McGuire

Doyle mentioned that scrutiny was high in the newspaper business since Jayson Blair and Stephen Glass had been outed as liars. He was pressing Rory about her paper, and probably getting a little too critical. Blair was the reporter for the "New York Times" that outright made up stories for the paper. Glass did the same, but worked for a paper called "The New Republic".
5. Was Michel desperate to record the Westminster Dog Show while over at Sookie's house?

Answer: Yes

He was grumbling about wanting to kill his cable provider. They would not offer the dog show, but according to Michel offered 24 hours of "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle". He finally had it recording and talked lovingly to the TV while the chows were on screen.
6. Emily was worried about which of Richard's cousins, who had a tendency to steal the family bar glasses?

Answer: Marylin

Richard's cousin Marylin had been stealing these glasses for the last five years, at any family function she attended. So, Emily had them wrapped and placed in her car, so they would not be available for Marylin to find. Marion Ross, who played Richard's mother Lorelai Gilmore, also played his cousin Marylin.
7. Did Lorelai and Michel share an awkward hug after she received news of her grandmother Lorelai's death?

Answer: Yes

He offered to hug her and she turned him down. Then, right before she left Sookie's, she asked him to go ahead and share the hug anyway. Afterward this was their exchange:
Lorelai: "Little weird?"
Michel: "Yes."
Lorelai: "Heart in the right place, but never again."
Michel: "Thank God."
8. What was Lorelai the first's maiden name?

Answer: Gilmore

Lorelai was completely shocked by the news, and later shocks Rory as well. Lorelai the first and her husband Charles were second cousins. Emily explained that this was not unusual in the past. She claimed it was to keep the "bloodlines close". It is right after this that Emily finds the carbon copy of the letter Lorelai had written her son, Richard, the day before his wedding.

It begged Richard not to wed Emily, as she was not and would never be a Gilmore. Lorelai commented that Emily couldn't be, as she wasn't directly related to the family.
9. Lorelai the first wanted to be cremated.

Answer: True

She had very specific instructions for her funeral. They had been written around twenty years prior, so Emily (and later Lorelai) had some difficulty arranging all of it. She wanted to be "buried in fresh clothes", have an open casket to view, and then be cremated and split into two.

The first set of ashes went into the family crypt next to her husband Charles, and the second placed in an urn and a top the mantle at Richard and Emily's house. Richard changed that last part, deciding all of her ashes should be placed in the crypt.

He said their mantle was too small, so an urn wasn't really appropriate. But, we all know he really did it for Emily, finally, at last, choosing her over his mother.
10. Whose quote is this? "I think she broke."

Answer: Sookie

After finding the awful letter to Richard, Emily dissolved herself from the responsibility of arranging Lorelai the first's funeral. She went on to give her maid Hilda the day off while she sat around smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and finishing "Crimson Petal and the White" for her book club. Upon seeing Emily in this way, Sookie stated the quote above.
Luke was not seen very much in this episode. But when he was, it was arguing with his wife Nicole.
