In Richard's first scene, he was at his loft when his mother came to give him good news. She showed him a copy of her book, "Unsolicited Advice", which was now officially published. She had him read the dedication and she dedicate it to him.

The team found out that the victim was Daniel Bardot and he was a recruit for the New York Police Department Academy. The team were stunned since it was "one of them" who died. Kate spoke to someone at the NYPD who said that Daniel Bardot had a rough life but was still a good kid.

Kate continued to speak with the supervisor to learn more about Daniel. The supervisor said that, while Daniel was a good guy, he had a few problems with his training. He stated that he would let his emotions get in the way of work at times and this caused him on occasion to lose judgment.

In one scene, Kate spoke to someone named Rachel Decker and Rachel said she worked with Daniel Bardot. A supervisor from the academy showed up and was disappointed that Rachel would not cooperate with Kate. When he identified who Kate was, the supervising officer lectured her.

Kate started to interrogate some recruits who went missing from the campus on the night Bardot was murdered and one was Dave Chambers. When she asked Dave to take a seat for questions, he bolted. He was arrested and, when Kate interrogated him at the precinct, he divulged to her that Daniel caught him with drugs. Daniel threatened to expose this unless Dave paid him $5,000.

Kate went to talk to Rachel after she found out that Daniel was Rachel's boyfriend. Rachel told Kate that she had no idea what the money was for but she did claim that he went out at night all the time as of recently. Kate also promised Rachel that she would not turn her in for fraternizing with a recruit.

In one scene, Kate was in her office when Castle went there and said he had something important to tell her. He said that he knew about Loksat a year and a half ago, so Kate wondered why he did not mention it to her and did not disclose Loksat's connection to Senator Bracken. Castle told her that he wanted to protect her.

The team continued investigating the murder and saw some interesting photographs. In them, Daniel was getting police files from Jack Flanagan so the team wondered why this was the case. The case became even more interesting when it was revealed that Jack Flanagan was Rachel Decker's father. It turned out that Daniel Bardot was a mole for Jack Flanagan.
