The episode commenced with a man shaking in fear as he was in his apartment and writing a letter. He pleaded with the person to not do anything to him. However, his pleas fell on deaf ears since he was murdered.

The team went to the victim's apartment and he was identified as Lars Cross. It was said that Lars Cross worked as a technician for a sonar technology company but was terminated. Castle wondered how he was able to afford expensive products if unemployed. He came upon the victim's severed head and freaked out.

At the crime scene, Castle noticed that Kevin looked fatigued so he asked him if everything was alright. Kevin claimed that he did not get enough sleep since Jenny was later in her pregnancy and she also had trouble sleeping. He was upset that she dragged him into her sleep deprivation issue.

Early in the show, Kevin and Javer spoke with Lars' sister to get more information from her. She said that he had recently gone to Turkey and then she brought up Lars' ex-boyfriend, Mark. She stated that Mark paid for Lars' tuition at Columbia University. When Kevin and Kate spoke with Mark, he said that Lars broke up with him shortly before traveling to Turkey.

Mark recollected that Lars claimed he smuggled something back from Turkey and speculated that his partner thought he would double cross him. Kevin said that Mark thought he would use the smuggled item to repay Mark and, when that was not the case, Mark was upset. Mark still insisted that he did not kill Lars but he took his laptop as collateral.

At Lars' apartment, Castle came upon the book "1,001 Arabian Nights" and wondered how it tied to the murder. The team saw a picture of Lars by a tomb and there was a symbol in the image that was the exact same symbol on a book that analyzed "1,001 Arabian Nights". Castle suspected that Lars was smuggling in Aladdin's lamp, which was one the stories from that book, as that item was in the tomb which Lars dug up.

The team got another clue in the investigation: A gentleman by the name of Mike Harlan was on the same flight as Lars Cross's from Turkey to New York. Mike also worked for Chesapeake Energy, the same business where Lars was employed before his termination. It was later revealed that Mike used an alias while in Turkey: Al Aiden.

Early on in the show, Castle went to talk to Dr. Marion Baker, professor of Middle East Literature at Hudson University, to see what she could tell them about the case. She claimed that genies were seen as dangerous and tricky pranksters in the literature. She only told the team a little bit of information since she had to go teach a class.

Kevin and Javier both started to joke around about what wishes they would want granted if they came across a genie. Javier claimed that he would wish to go home with a different woman every night while he was employed as a professional martial artist. Kevin said he would wish to be a major Broadway star being in "Les Miserables".

Castle went to a location to inspect it since he believed Aladdin's lamp was in there. Sure enough, he came upon the lamp but then a woman held him at gunpoint. She called out to a man named Travis and said they had company.
