Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "American Duos"- In the season two opener, Shawn and Gus pose as contestants on an "American Idol" rip-off called "American Duos". Which judge was the object of their protection and investigation?

Answer: Nigel St. Nigel

Of the choices, only the correct answer was an actual judge for "American Duos". Tim Curry played Nigel, the Simon Cowellesque judge of the series. Nigel was being stalked by a contestant named Bevin, who also happened to be the biggest fan of another judge, Zapato Dulce. It turned out that Zapato and Bevin were trying to kill Nigel. Zapato Dulce, which translates into "sweet shoe", was played by Christian De La Fuente, and actress Gina Gershon played an overdone Paula Abdulesque character named Emilina Saffron.

For the competition, Shawn and Gus offered a hilarious rendition of "Shout" by Tears for Fears. Gus was dressed like a mid 1980s Michael Jackson and Juliet provided their choreography.
2. "Sixty Five Million Years Off"- In this episode, a month has passed without Shawn being called in to help the police. When he finally found his way on to a crime scene, what did he conclude had killed Christopher Franzen?

Answer: a dinosaur

Apparently, Lassie (Carlton Lassiter) had been on a crime solving streak. We first heard he had solved seven in a row, then it's confirmed to be eight, and finally the number sat at nine cases solved. Shawn questioned Juliet and the chief, and finally was asked by Lassiter to accompany them on to their latest crime to "see how it's done". The case was a man washed ashore at the marina. He had blunt trauma to his head, but also what appeared to be a giant bite mark. Shawn read that the bite radius was 34 inches, and decided that it was definitely a dinosaur. Later, he told a reluctant Gus it was specifically a T-Rex.
Franzen turned out to be a paleontologist, which finally made the chief interested in Shawn's help. In the end, Shawn and Gus solved two murders with the help of Shawn's father. The first murder was twenty years old.

Peter Benchley was the creator of the mythical killer shark nicknamed Jaws. The other choices, as ridiculous as they sound, could be theories coming from Shawn Spencer!
3. "Psy vs. Psy"- Lou Diamond Phillips guest starred as Special Agent Ewing. Upon meeting Juliet for the first time, Ewing quoted "Romeo and Juliet". Shawn countered his quote by offering a quote of his own. Which TV actress, most popular in the 1980s, did Shawn quote?

Answer: Mindy Cohn

Agent Ewing: "How silver sweet sound lovers tongue by night. Shakespeare, 'Romeo and Juliet'."
Shawn: "Tootie, you in trouble? Mind Cohn, 'Facts of Life'."

The case was counterfeit money, in the form of $100 bills, being passed around in small towns. The latest case had been in their local Home Depot, and Shawn became romantically involved with one of the agents. Agent Lindsay Leiken turned out to be a real psychic working for the FBI, but she had also become involved with the counterfeiter. When Shawn realized that the man was making more money than usual, Lindsay realized she was about to be cut out of their deal, and she killed him.
Bianca Kajlich played Lindsay. She also starred along side Oliver Hudson and David Spade in the sitcom "Rules of Engagement".
4. "Zero To Murder in Sixty Seconds"- What method was used to kill off Jonny G, owner of the custom car shop Bling It On?

Answer: nitrous oxide

The case started when Lassiter's car was stolen out of the precinct parking lot. Shawn did what he does, and figured it was stolen by a valet from Lassiter's previous night's dining. Shawn psyched out the lady at the restaurant and got info on a missing valet.

He found it lead to a warehouse where cars go in and only parts come out. The bust went down without a hitch, but that didn't sit too well with Shawn, it was too easy. He, in turn, had Gus' car tricked out by Jonny G and the Bling It On crew.

After he was able to put all the missing pieces together, he and Gus went back to the shop and found Jonny dead inside a car. The nitrous bottle was open and spraying noxious fumes, which had killed Jonny.
5. "And Down the Stretch Comes Murder"- In this episode, our favorite faux psychic detectives were called on to help out a grade school enemy. Jimmy Nickles used to take Shawn and Gus' money, and generally torment them in school. When the duo saw Jimmy again after 20 years, what did Jimmy reveal to be his unexpected profession?

Answer: jockey

In the flashback to 1987, Jimmy the bully came across has a giant boy. When Gus and Shawn saw Jimmy again, he was no more than five feet tall and revealed to them he had been a very successful jockey. Jimmy wanted the men to figure out why he'd suddenly had a bad streak, despite riding high ranking mounts. Shawn agreed to take on the case, despite Gus' protests, as he felt guilty for ratting Jimmy out in the past. Shawn had said that a spitball, which had hit their teacher, was from Jimmy. Jimmy was expelled, and Shawn had left over guilt about it. Shawn became obsessed with the idea of a "second spitter". The men solved the case after another jockey was accidentally killed by adding ketamine into his already over taxed system. The ketamine arrived via a blow dart meant for Juan Carlos' horse, but that accidentally hit him in the neck. Juan Carlos died of a heart attack immediately after the race, and his autopsy revealed high doses of many drugs. The ketamine was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back, and sent Juan into heart failure.

In the end, Gus turned out to be the mysterious "second spitter". Jimmy let Shawn off of the hook by explaining that his expulsion was a great thing. He'd gone to live in Maui with his dad, who let him do whatever he wanted.
The "Psych-Out" at the end was the cast singing Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" in the wrong range. They were either too deep or too high pitched, and totally funny!
6. "Meat is Murder, But Murder is Also Murder"- A local food critic is suffering from a serious lack of love from the restaurants in Santa Barbara. Gus and Shawn find that narrowing the suspects is a bit harder than usual. The food critic was killed by a colleague, but what did he eat that caused his death?

Answer: death cap mushrooms

Gus' namesake was in town for a visit, and Shawn learned that Gus' entire family believed Gus to be the psychic detective. John Amos played Gus' uncle and namesake, Burton Guster.

Shawn believed it to be Chef Antonio who had murdered the critic Vince Wagner. After Antonio's arrest (and as usual), Shawn instantly felt like something was not right. Shawn always got that feeling when the arrest was too easy. He was right too, and the duo discovered that the real killer cut his mushrooms up differently than Antonio! It turned out that a colleague at Vince's newspaper wanted his job. This co-worker, Nick, posed as a health inspector on the night Vince died. He switched Antonio's risotto for the tainted batch.

The death cap mushroom is real, apple seeds contain the toxin cyanide, and barnoticles are a figment of my imagination.
7. "Rob-A-Bye Baby"- Chief Vick had what top secret new assignment for Shawn and Gus?

Answer: find her a nanny

Chief Vick was so sleep deprived that all she could consider from the men was that they psychically find her a new nanny. Her previous nanny had been her nephew, but he'd decided to return to nursing school. She hadn't been able to get any sleep in many days, and had turned most of her frustration on Lassiter, who in turn laid his on Juliet. Shawn was more concerned with a string of robberies in an area called The Heights, but the chief wouldn't allow them to take any other case besides her own. Shawn ignored this, and discovered that the top local nanny agency, called Red Balloon, was using high tech security cameras to spy on the neighbors of their clients.
8. "Rob-A-Bye Baby"- What was the name of the local neighborhood that had been experiencing burglaries?

Answer: The Heights

The Heights had experienced four robberies when Shawn became interested in the case. He overheard two nannies discussing it at the playground, and at first suspected that nannies were the thieves.

There are a few different areas of Santa Barbara with "Heights" in their names. Sunnydale was the home of the characters on "Buffy" and Plantation Colony is a local neighborhood of Sugar Land, Texas.
9. "Bounty Hunters!"- Which "legendary" actor played the role of Shawn and Gus' childhood hero Byrd Tatums?

Answer: Kevin Sorbo

Kevin played Byrd, a bounty hunter the boys had idolized back in the 1980s. In this episode, Byrd was after an escapee named Dwyane Cantana. Cantana was alleged to have murdered Isabelle Cole, and got out of Juliet's custody before his arraignment. Upon being irritated by Lassiter, Juliet called the Psych boys in to help on the case. Sadly, the boys discovered that Tatums was a bit rude and ruthless.

Kevin Sorbo starred as Hercules for six seasons on "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys". He starred on the sister show "Xena: Warrior Princess" as Hercules a couple of times as well. Later he played Captain Dylan Hunt, for five seasons on "Andromeda" and Frank Atwood on the final season of "The OC".

Nathan Fillion, James Marsters and Bailey Chase are all part of the Whedonverse. Each of these actors starred in one or more of these TV series/movies: "Buffy", "Angel", "Firefly" and "Serenity". Chase went on to star in a break out hit on TNT network in 2007 called "Saving Grace".
10. "Bounty Hunters!"- In this episode, Shawn mentioned a time that Gus had met one of his favorite celebrities. Which one was it that Gus met at a dry cleaner, that turned out to be a disappointment?

Answer: Judge Reinhold

After their disappointing meeting of Byrd Tatums, Shawn brought up Gus' experience with Judge. Judge has enjoyed a long career in the business. He starred in three "Beverly Hills Cop" films as Billy Rosewood, along side Fred Savage in "Vice Versa", as a high-school student in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", and guest starred on several prominent TV series.

He turned fifty years old in May 2007.
