Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who hosted the ceremony that aired February 26, 2017?

Answer: Jimmy Kimmel

This was Kimmel's first time hosting the Oscars, but he also hosted the Emmy Awards in 2012 and 2016.
2. What controversial Academy Award winning director was nominated for directing "Hacksaw Ridge"?

Answer: Mel Gibson

Mel Gibson won both directing and producing (Best Picture) at the 1996 Oscar ceremony. In 2006, Gibson was arrested for drunk driving. While being questioned by the arresting officer, he became erratic and spouted anti-semitic comments. This incident did much harm to his career, leading to a virtual inability to get much work in Hollywood. Working sporadically in the years following, including the Jodie Foster-directed "The Beaver" (2011) and "Get the Gringo" (2012), Gibson had a comeback of sorts with his World War II drama "Hacksaw Ridge" receiving 6 Academy Award nominations.
3. Denzel Washington was nominated this year for his role in "Fences." What other job did he serve on the film?

Answer: Director

While he didn't win in the acting category this time, Washington won Best Supporting Actor for 1989's "Glory" and Best Actor for 2001's "Training Day." In addition to acting and directing, Washington also served as one of the film's producers along with Todd Black and Scott Rudin.
4. As of 2017, Meryl Streep is the most honored actor in Academy history. What number nomination was the respected actress on this year for "Florence Foster Jenkins"?

Answer: 20

Streep won for Best Supporting Actress for "Kramer vs. Kramer" (1979), lead actress for "Sophie's Choice" (1982) and again for "The Iron Lady" (2011). She has been nominated multiple times in every decade since the 1970s.
5. Which of these came away from the evening without a single win?

Answer: Hidden Figures

"Hacksaw Ridge" won 2 awards that night, for Best Film Editing and Sound Mixing. "Arrival" won for its sound editing, and "Suicide Squad" overtook presumed front-runner "Star Trek Beyond" in the makeup category.
6. The major event of the night was the notorious envelope mix-up, when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway declared "La La Land" the Best Picture winner. What ultimately was deemed to have happened?

Answer: Beatty was handed a duplicate envelope for best actress

This moment will linger in Oscar history as one of the most bizarre ever. The PricewaterhouseCoopers accountants who were supposed to make sure the envelopes were handed out smoothly were found to have diverted their attentions elsewhere while the announcement for best picture was being conducted. So the wrong envelope was given to a confused Warren Beatty, who then handed the envelope to an agitated Faye Dunaway, who read "La La Land." This was the title on the card, but it was for the wrong category. Thus, the real winner had to be revealed in the middle of acceptance speeches by "La La Land" producers.
7. Which film won Best Picture this year?

Answer: Moonlight

"Moonlight" had won a screenplay prize, along with Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) prior to the top prize. In spite of it's stature as an independently produced film with a small budget, it overcame front-runner "La La Land" in the final tally.
8. The Best Documentary Feature winner "O.J.: Made in America" made history for what reason?

Answer: It had the longest running time of any winner before it

Despite being produced by ESPN, "O.J.: Made in America" was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January. It was over 450 minutes long. It was then released to theaters in May before being aired on both ABC and ESPN in June of 2016. Numerous documentaries, most produced for television, have been made about the infamous trial of 1994.

A new documentary, being made with the participation of actor Martin Sheen, was said to be in the works. It will present an opposing view of the trial, asking the question "what if O.J. was innocent?"
9. Casey Affleck won Best Actor for "Manchester by the Sea." What longtime friend served as a producer and was nominated for Best Picture for the film?

Answer: Matt Damon

Matt Damon also won an Oscar, along with Casey's brother Ben, for the original screenplay of "Good Will Hunting" (1997).
10. Which popular longtime action star won a special Honorary Oscar for his career?

Answer: Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan started his career as a stunt man in 1970s Hong Kong, and brought his unique blend of action and comedy to the United States in the 80s, becoming particularly popular after "Rumble in the Bronx" (1995). Since then he has taken roles in such hits as "Rush Hour" (1998), "The Karate Kid" (2010) and voice work in the "Kung Fu Panda" animated films.
