Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Seth MacFarlane, host of the evening's festivities, started out with a joke directed at seeing if one of tonight's nominees would laugh. Who was the subject of the first barb of the night?

Answer: Tommy Lee Jones

The joke succeeded. Tommy Lee Jones chuckled on camera immediately following the joke. And so the night had begun.
2. After Captain Kirk (played in full uniform by William Shatner) comes back in time to rescue Seth from hosting the worst Oscar broadcast ever, Seth's musical numbers push him over the edge to headlines of all periodicals giving him the praise of "Best Oscars Ever". Everyone of them except whom?

Answer: Entertainment Weekly

The "new" musical numbers featured Channing Tatum, Charlize Theron, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the L.A. Gay Men's Chorus. Each song bumped up the level of praise in each new headline. Ironically, one of "EW's" cover stories just before the Oscars had Seth MacFarlane on the cover.
3. Five excellent Oscar-nominated animated full length movies led to "Brave" winning the award. The director of the film, one of two to accept the award, came to the stage wearing what unusual article of clothing?

Answer: Kilt

With "brave" being based in Scotland, and the director being Scottish, his roots came through as he wore the formal wear from his native land, joining Seth's dad who also wore a kilt to attend the event.
4. The winners of Best Visual Effects came from the movie "Life of Pi". Rambling on a little long, the ubiquitous "wrap it up" music began. But unlike previous years, this year's music was quite familiar to music lovers. What music did the orchestra play?

Answer: The "Jaws" Theme

Immediately recognizable and rather intimidating, the swell of the music didn't speed up them up enough; their microphone was shut off. Not surprisingly, the next two acceptance speeches were quite short.
5. Halle Berry came out to announce the fact that James Bond 007 was celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in cinema this year. After a montage featuring many action sequences and top theme songs from the many Bond movies over the last fifty years, who actually came out to perform their theme song live?

Answer: Dame Shirley Bassey doing "Goldfinger"

Receiving a standing ovation, Bassey proved at age 76 she still has pipes. Adele would later come on stage to perform her title song to "Skyfall".
6. Seth MacFarlane took time to acknowledge the house orchestra for their fine playing. Which of these anomalies was true about the orchestra?

Answer: The orchestra didn't perform in the same building

It is hard to say why the orchestra would perform all the music live from a building down the street, but it's what they did. The shots of the orchestra proved they were live right down to the conductor cutting off the group and acknowledging the applause.
7. John Travolta introduced a montage of musical movie performances featuring songs that won Oscars for their respective performers. Which of these was not one of the three movies in this particular collection?

Answer: West Side Story

The full cast came out to perform the song from "Les Miserables". The movie didn't win Best Song, but it did garner Anne Hathaway an Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress on the night.
8. Mark Wahlberg and "Ted" came out to name the winner for Best Sound Mixing. But Ted was insistent on finding out where the best post-Oscar party was to be. Mark unveiled the secret location. Whose house "hosted" the later shindig?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Kidding, of course, Mark and Ted (the teddy bear from the movie of the same name) would go on to promote Ted's Jewish-ness in order to have a long career in show business.
9. Introducing the President of the Academy, Seth MacFarlane said his name sounded like what?

Answer: A Russian guy sneezing

Howard Koch, known by his nickname "Hawk", does have a resemblance to the sneezing reference. Hawk Koch. (Gesundheit.)
10. Nicole Kidman introduced the final three nominees for Best Picture. But she "stepped on" the applause for the first of her three movie nominees by going on to the second introduction. After awkwardly backtracking to allow the applause, she continued on. What was the movie that Nicole almost didn't allow its due respect?

Answer: Silver Linings Playbook

Kidman rolled her eyes at herself for the gaffe. She made a point to prompt the applause for the second introduced movie, "Django Unchained".
11. The annual "In Memoriam" portion ended with Barbra Streisand singing a song written by the the final honoree. Who was this composer honored?

Answer: Marvin Hamlisch

Streisand showed, much like Shirley Bassey earlier, she still has the chops at age 70. She ended her version of Hamlisch's "The Way We Were" to the loudest ovation of the night thus far.
12. Turns out that Seth MacFarlane was not only the host but a nominee, writing the lyrics to Best Song nominee "Everybody Needs a Best Friend". Who came out to sing this song?

Answer: Norah Jones

Seth would not win, losing to Adele's ability to win every award on the planet, this time winning for "Skyfall" from the movie of the same name.
13. Jennifer Lawrence was the victor in the Best Actress category for her performance in "Silver Linings Playbook". She "commemorated" her first Oscar win by doing what?

Answer: Tripping and falling

Catching her dress on the stairs, she laid herself out thoroughly. Unfazed, she waved off the standing ovation saying the audience had pity on her for falling.
14. Daniel Day-Lewis accepted his third Best Actor Award for his uncanny performance as Abraham Lincoln. He also informed the audience he was not the first choice to play Lincoln; who did he say Spielberg wanted first for the role?

Answer: Meryl Streep

To raucous laughter, he stated that he and Streep were planning to swap roles and he was to play Margaret Thatcher, the role Meryl Streep won the Oscar for in 2012. As they walked off the stage, Streep and Day-Lewis nearly started an earthquake with their collective acting ability.
15. Jack Nicholson came out to announce the winner for Best Picture, but was joined via satellite for the announcement by whom?

Answer: Michelle Obama

The other choices are dead; that would have been a neat trick to announce a 2013 Academy Award winner after they had passed.

Michelle came on to award "Argo" the Best Picture Award, and Ben Affleck got a little revenge for getting snubbed for Best Director. He and George Clooney both won their second Oscars for this picture, Clooney previously winning for "Syriana" and Affleck winning for "Good Will Hunting". Both were executive producers for "Argo".
