Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To open the 2011 Oscars, co-hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway took an 'Inception'-like dream journey, appearing in a number of this year's Best Picture nominees. But what movie did they appear in to get out of the dream sequence, and onto the live stage?

Answer: Back to the Future

Getting into Mcfly's DeLorean, they hit 88mph and flashed themselves back to the present, and began the show for the crowd and television audience to see.

Interesting note, they apparently jumped into Alec Baldwin's dream, and apparently Alec hires Morgan Freeman to narrate his dreams. Wonder how much THAT costs.
2. To open the show, James and Anne introduced relatives of theirs in the audience. Anne was berated by her mom for slouching, and James' grandmother showed she's still young at heart. Who did James Franco's grandmother call out that she saw in the audience?

Answer: "Marky" Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg has spent a lot of screen time without his shirt lately, but if I looked like that when I was pushing 40, I would throw away the T-shirts. James Franco's nana has a good eye. Mark Wahlberg was there in support of his fellow actors, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo, all of whom were nominated for Supporting Awards. Mark Wahlberg was also the producer of the Best Picture nominee, "The Fighter".
3. The second award of the night went to Wally Pfister for Cinematography for "Inception". What unusual accessory did he wear on his head for his acceptance speech?

Answer: Eyeglasses on his forehead

Not sure if the glasses were by choice, or if he just forgot they were there, but they certainly stuck out when he got on camera. The first two awards went to "Inception" but the film did not continue to dominate the evening.
4. Making an early attempt to steal the show, who was it that received a standing ovation upon introduction, hit on Anne Hathaway, broke Colin Firth up, and, with the envelope open, kept the Best Supporting Actress nominees waiting an insufferable amount of time before, "you know", announcing the winner?

Answer: Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas may have even outshone his son's recent public return on the 2011 Golden Globes after Michael Douglas survived a battle with cancer. Kirk Douglas suffered a stroke in 1996, but he still makes occasional appearances, including this one on the 2011 Academy Awards.
5. Melissa Leo, winner of the Best Supporting Actress Award for 2011, did what to solidify her place in memorable Oscar speeches?

Answer: Swore

"I saw Kate (Winslet) do this two years ago and she made it look so...easy!" Yeah, that wasn't the memorable part of the sentence. Anne Hathaway referenced it later by saying "I didn't know that 'F' stood for 'Fighter'." Melissa also hit on Kirk Douglas before going into her acceptance speech, and seemed just as enamored with Kirk as she was with winning.
6. Aaron Sorkin won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Social Network". In his speech, he stated that he's an Oscar winner now and demanded some respect from whom?

Answer: His daughter's guinea pig

He left no explanation why, but it sounded like his daughter Roxie's guinea pig gets along better with Roxie than Roxie's father. Aaron has won numerous Emmy Awards for his writing on such shows as "The West Wing" and "Sports Night".
7. It was announced that the run of 36 years of the Oscars appearing on the same network would be extended by nine more, through the year 2020. What network boasts this incredible run?

Answer: ABC

ABC even hosted the years when Johnny Carson was host, back when Carson ran NBC's late night dynasty. I don't recall any year it hasn't been on ABC, and longevity in television is a hard thing to come by. Even NBC hasn't owned rights to the Olympics in the US as long.
8. Kevin Spacey introduced the first two performances nominated for Best Original Song. He broke out a few bars of "Top Hat" and introduced himself as whom?

Answer: George Clooney

George Clooney made no camera appearances this night, due to his generally down year compared to the run he came off of. Charlie Sheen was referenced once, when he apparently texted James Franco when he appeared in drag.
9. Billy Crystal came out to a standing ovation and stated that he had hosted the Oscars eight times. That is ten times less than the original host of the first televised Oscars, who went on to host seventeen more. Who was this iconic Oscar host who, with help of visual effects, introduced the announcers of the Visual Effects Oscar winner?

Answer: Bob Hope

Bob Hope was the master, as Billy Crystal aptly stated. He ruled the stage like a vaudeville act and usually had the audience in the palm of his hand. With help of visual effects, he was the one to introduce Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to the stage to hand out the Visual Effects Award.
10. The annual "In Memoriam" tribute featured one person. Halle Berry singled out this person as a pioneer in film during a time when pioneering wasn't always looked upon with welcoming eyes. The tribute ended with a quote: "It's not the load that breaks you, it's the way you carry it," said by this iconic pioneer. Who was this icon who passed away in 2010?

Answer: Lena Horne

Lena Horne fought the battle over African-American women getting treated correctly in the field of cinema with grace. She will be missed.
11. During the "In Memoriam" tribute, the classic song "Smile" was sung by what famous singer?

Answer: Celine Dion

Celine Dion, often very animated in her singing style, showed restraint in her singing this time, leaving the moment to those who were honored in the slide show. Unlike past years, there was no audible applause during those that were shown in the tribute.
12. Tom Hooper won Best Director for "The King's Speech". He thanked his mother, who was in the audience. What specifically did he thank his mother for?

Answer: Introducing him to the story "The King's Speech"

Tom's mother went to a little-known unpublished play performance called "The King's Speech". She called him up the next morning and said, "I think I have your next project." The rest is an Oscar in her son's hand. No, she didn't work on craft services, but the winner of Best Short Film, Luke Matheny, did thank HIS mother for providing craft services, a result of a probably very small budget.
13. Sandra Bullock introduced the Best Actor nominees, one of whom was the co-host, James Franco. She ran a laundry list of roles he had played, but called out his most significant role, a part he had on what daytime soap opera?

Answer: General Hospital

"Hey, actors ACT," was her explanation for his working choices. She also called Jeff Bridges "Dude", referencing his classic portrayal of the Dude in "The Big Lebowski". Neither won; predictably the award went to Colin Firth, who made a very well-rehearsed "off-the-cuff" acceptance speech.
14. Finally, the last award of the night, and the last of Anne Hathaway's outfits. Not counting the pre-taped parts of the beginning, how many outfits did Anne Hathaway wear on the show?

Answer: Seven

She opened with a white dress with black trim, then wore a tux-looking outfit for her Hugh Jackman slam song for Hugh not joining her in a song-and-dance number. Next came a black and silver long number, then came her favorite, a grey fully fringed one that seemed to move on its own when she did the twist. Next was a purple low cut dress, then a blue shimmering dress, and to close out the show, a black dress that gave the illusion it was see-through. (Hey, I'm a guy, I don't know any of these clothing terms, and if I call it purple and it's magenta, sorry, I go by the 8-color Crayola box. If I need to add the word 'dark' or 'light', to make my point, I'll do that.) James Franco came out looking like Marilyn Monroe when Anne was wearing her tux outfit.
15. To close out the show, they invited students from a Staten Island, NY school to sing what song?

Answer: Over the Rainbow

They invited all Oscar winners to come out during the song to one more final rousing ovation. Melissa Leo closed out the night of her life by singing as loud as she could on the final chords.
