Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'Ashes to Ashes' exploded on to our screens courtesy of the BBC in February 2008, and was such a hit that two subsequent series were aired in 2009 and 2010. The two lead characters are Detective Inspector Alex Drake, and Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt. There are other characters who also play pivotal roles within the series' - two of which are Drakes parents. What are their names?

Answer: Tim & Caroline Price

'Ashes to Ashes' was not the first super-series to star Gene Hunt. Inspired by the David Bowie song of the same name, 'Life On Mars' became an instant phenomenon. A mix of science fiction and police procedural, the plot follows police officer Sam Tyler as he is shot in the present day and 'transported' (or is he?) back to 1973 and a world away from modern policing.

It was such a hit that 'Ashes to Ashes' followed in the same vein just two years later.
2. In 'Ashes to Ashes' the female star of the show is the feisty Alex Drake, a fictional policewoman working for the Metropolitan Police, who is captured and shot by a madman in 2008. Then something strange happens...what?

Answer: She wakes up and finds herself back in 1981

Drake finds herself inexplicably in 1981, working alongside DCI Gene Hunt and his faithful sidekicks Ray Carling and Chris Skelton. Before she was shot, Drake had been researching Sam Tyler (the central character in 'Life on Mars') and before long finds herself embroiled in circumstances she doesn't understand or believe.
3. Who plays Gene Hunt, the self-styled 'Manc lion' (he is from Manchester)?

Answer: Philip Glenister

Glenister has also appeared in programmes including 'Heartbeat', 'Clocking Off', and 'Silent Witness', but is now instantly recognized as Gene Hunt. Marshall Lancaster plays Chris Skelton, Dean Andrews stars as Ray Carling, and John Simm played Sam Tyler in 'Life On Mars'.
4. With every great TV series comes a great soundtrack, and 'Ashes to Ashes' is no exception! Popular songs of the era are heard in every episode - which of the following songs was not one of them?

Answer: 'Ballroom Blitz' by The Sweet

'Ballroom Blitz' was released in 1973, and featured in the 'Life On Mars' series. The other songs were all released in the early eighties and were in the Charts at the time in which 'Ashes to Ashes' is set, and provided great music for the escapades of Drake, Hunt and co.!
5. The final episode of series three reveals that the show's characters are all in fact dead police officers in purgatory, who cannot rest following their violent and premature deaths.

Answer: True

This revelation comes as a shock to everyone who watched, and even the characters themselves seem to have forgotten they were dead. The only one who is unsurprised was Gene, and acts as a kind of 'ferryman' for his colleagues to finally rest in peace.
6. Throughout her time in 1981, Alex Drake continues to work out the reason she is there and to try and find her way "back home" to the present day. She desperately wants to return to her daughter who is left behind in 2008 - but what is her daughter's name?

Answer: Molly

In the opening dialogue of each program in series 1, Drake says she must "Fight to live. Fight to see my daughter. Fight to get home". On occasion she believes she can see Molly, but soon realises it is just a memory or hallucination, and that her daughter is not there with her.
7. The quotes of Gene Hunt have become almost as legendary as the man himself. Find the missing word to complete probably his most famous phrase: "Fire up the ___!"

Answer: Quattro

Hunt's beautiful red Audi Quattro is almost as much of a star as he is - as Chris puts it in one episode, "All hail the mighty Quattro!" However, purists have noticed that, in 1981, only the left hand drive imported Quattro was available - but hey, it's only television right?
8. Throughout each 'Ashes to Ashes' series, a mysterious figure appears to Drake at times of life-threatening danger, or intrudes on her dreams, acting as a kind of omen or angel of death character. This same figure also appears in the music video for David Bowie's 'Ashes to Ashes' hit song. What sort of figure is it?

Answer: A Pierrot clown

The white face, loose blouse with large buttons, and conical hat is synonymous with the Pierrot clowns of 17th century pantomime and performance. Its appearance in 'Ashes to Ashes' as an omen to Drake once again shows the attention to detail within the programmes as it provides yet another link to Bowie as the inspiration behind the series'.
9. Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster), the faithful Detective sidekick of Gene Hunt, has matured from the naive and gentle character seen in 'Life On Mars' to a seasoned officer in 'Ashes to Ashes'. Much of the time he is in his office he is seen to be pursuing the affections of a young WPC (female police constable) named what?

Answer: Shaz

Shaz Granger (Montserrat Lombard) is once described by Hunt as a 'lobotomised Essex girl', but who is intelligent and intellectual on a much deeper level. In one episode when Shaz is severely wounded whilst attempting to make an arrest, Drake says she is her "favourite imaginary construct". Shaz is the target of Chris's affections but initially is uninterested.
10. The sexual tension between Hunt and Drake is, at times, almost palpable. As a result, they become a couple, causing Drake to want to stay in 1981 forever.

Answer: False

Drake and Hunt never became a couple, though at times the audience is often left wondering if there is more to their relationship than is shown in each episode...
