Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From where does Liv obtain a fertility totem?

Answer: Her doctor's office

Liv and Matt sit in front of Liv's fertility doctor as they hear the bad news-- the in vitro-fertilization didn't succeed and, to the doctor's recommendation, they may need to consider adoption or surrogacy. Liv is upset with the suggestion as she wants nothing more than her own pregnancy. She doesn't care about the cost or the diminishing chances with each procedure; she wants to try again. They'll try again in eight weeks.

As Matt heads out to grab the car, Liv sets up the next appointment at the front desk. The receptionist, Bernadette, sympathizes with Liv's efforts but offers up something...a little weird. Taking a fertility totem from her desk drawer, she gives it over, claiming it's an old Sumerian (or maybe Babylonian) trick. You place it under your bed, you get a baby. Liv rolls her eyes, but Bernadette says it's been in her family for a very long time. She might as well try. She has, after all, tried everything else.
2. What is Matt's profession?

Answer: Actor

One stormy night, Liv places the fertility totem under her and Matt's bed. She thinks she's crazy for even considering it, but there's no reason not to try nothing. The pair head to bed contemplating their lives-- Matt and his aim to become an actor, Liv and her substantial inheritance-- but they reassure each other that they're there for one another's goals. That night, during the storm, they conceive their child.

Sixteen months later, Liv struggles with the new arrival, Aaron, believing that she doesn't seem to know how to take care of her own child. Her postpartum depression overwhelms her on the regular even though she has help. And then there are the noises she keeps hearing.

Liv seemed to forget about the totem altogether. Checking under her bed and finding it, she decides to toss it into a box in the closet and forget about it.
3. Liv first sees the demonic figure via which means?

Answer: On her tablet

Matt returns home from an acting gig, a bit part as a corpse on "NCIS", to find Liv wandering the house. There on the suggestion of their housekeeper, Norma, he reiterates that he's trying his best to contribute to the family. He doesn't want to live solely off of Liv's inheritance. This said, Liv knows she needs support; she feels like she's losing it. Matt, on his agent's recommendation, suggests that she speak to an M.D. in hormone and postpartum disorders.

Matt returns to work as Liv heads to bed, and moments before she's about to fall asleep she hears the baby monitor. Looking up at the tablet perched on her nightstand she can see her baby's room... and the devilish figure looming over the crib. She races into the nursery to find the room empty, even though something appears to be standing right behind her on the tablet screen.
4. Dr. Berger, Liv's new therapist, suggests which of the following to improve the baby's mood?

Answer: Detox baths

Liv speaks to her new therapist, Dr. Berger, and struggles to open up about her troubles. Liv's chief concern is, irrationally, that her baby might hate her. Babies, her doctor says, can pick up on stress so perhaps Liv's own feelings are manifesting in her child's. A baby, however, can not simply hate its mother, so Liv might be overthinking things. But it's not crazy to get that feeling. Since Liv isn't open to the idea of a night nurse, the doctor sets up some easy strategies to test out, some which may seem a bit new agey.

The very first strategy Liv tries, giving Aaron a bit of a spa treatment, works wonderfully. Liv bathes her child and puts him to sleep before cleaning up and she has to admit (to Matt) that Dr. Berger's ideas worked perfectly; they've reduced her stress and soothed the baby.

Later, when Liv checks on Aaron and finds him crying, she checks the crib to find a devilish totem-- like her old one, but in a new form-- sitting in the bed. She confronts Norma about it, but her housekeeper quits when she sees the figurine.

It's then that Liv hears noises in the basement, and when she goes to check on the awful growling noises there, she finds clawmarks carved into the walls. She accidentally cuts herself on a sharp nail as a broken piece of ventilation breaks from the ceiling on its own.
5. When Liv plays the audio back from her baby monitor footage, she believes she hears which words being said?

Answer: "I want him."

Liv has no choice but to explain the truth behind Norma's decision to quit but she lies when she notes that she got the talisman from a store and not from the receptionist at the doctor's office. Neither of them know how the totem got into the crib and they have to conclude that a raccoon got into the vents. Matt reasons that Liv must be very tired; her brain is going into overdrive. He expresses his worry, but Liv says he doesn't need to be concerned. With his role on "NCIS" being expanded, he's expecting to be gone more often, and she's going to need to be okay with being home alone at night.

That night, Liv looks up the origins of the totem and she discovers that it seems to have taken the form of the Pagan demon Ba'al, the Lord of the Flies. The demonic figure appears once again on her tablet and, this time, when she checks on the baby, something is different. She checks the footage the next morning, this time with Matt in the room. When she speeds up the audio on the footage, she hears it-- something distinct, like words. "I. WANT. HIM."
6. Dr. Berger, finding Liv to be sleep-deprived, prescribes which of these for her when she makes a house call?

Answer: Zoloft

Liv becomes obsessed with the baby monitor footage, poring over the audio in an attempt to get to the bottom of the problem. It's for this reason that Matt invites Dr. Berger to the house. Dr. Berger listens to the recording and, with care, suggests to Liv that it's nothing more than a case of pareidolia, the brain finding significance in something that truly isn't there. Liv thinks the doctor is calling her delusional; Dr. Berger says she's human...and sleep-deprived. Dr. Berger prescribes Zoloft, and that night Liv takes her first pill.
7. Which of these do Matt's friends attempt to use to invoke the spirits in the house?

Answer: A Ouija board

To celebrate Matt's success and 'having made it' with his guest stint on "NCIS", he invites his old college friends over for dinner. Dinner is derailed, however, when one of his friends finds a Ouija board on a nearby table. Despite Matt's hesitation, Liv encourages the group to have a bit of fun. But once they all get their hands on the planchette and call upon the spirits, things get weird. Although the game originally starts as a joke, they continue playing and come upon the words 'HE IS MINE'.

Liv, enraged, tosses the board into the fireplace and storms off. Matt tries to follow her and talk sense into her, but she believes ardently that something is after their child. It's then that he gives up; he's been patient and helpful but he can't stay by her side if she can't pull herself together.
8. Bernadette, in an attempt to help Liv rid herself of Ba'al, hands her a grimoire and which of these?

Answer: A dagger

Liv continues to struggle with visions to the point where she returns to her doctor's office to confront the receptionist, Bernadette. She brings the figurine with her and explains that Ba'al wants her baby back, but Bernadette doesn't have much insight. Bringing her to her apartment, Bernadette opens up some of her parents' old grimoires (though she claims they're all fairy tale nonsense) and explains that she can find a banishment spell at the very least. What she finds is as good as it gets; she hands Liv a ritual dagger and tells her to follow the instructions.

That night, while Matt is on a night shoot, Liv lights candles and lays a pagan salt ring down in the bedroom. She uses the dagger to cut her palm and recites the incantation in the book, spilling her blood on the totem. As she finishes reading, she turns around and stabs into the being she believes to be behind her...but it turns out to be Matt.
9. After accidentally stabbing Matt, what happens to Liv?

Answer: She's institutionalized

Two weeks after the night of the ritual, Matt visits Liv in her cell. After he was stabbed, he went to the emergency room while she was institutionalized. He assures Liv that he doesn't blame her for what happened and that she should come home, but Liv won't leave until Dr. Berger clears her to return to her baby. Until then, she feels it's unsafe.

As Matt leaves the hospital he gets into Bernadette's car. Taking off his sling, he commends the both of them for keeping up the act; he got stabbed for his efforts while Bernadette was able to collect all of the occult bric-a-brac from local spiritualist stores, all with the intent to gaslight Liv and keep her locked up. They head back to the house and celebrate with his friends. They succeeded in getting her out of the picture; all of the baby monitor activity, sounds, and scratches were faked, and they can split the inheritance. They'll never have to work again.
10. Who is blamed for the deaths of Matt's friends?

Answer: Matt

Matt can only celebrate for so long before Aaron cries through the baby monitor. When he goes to check on the baby, all Hell breaks loose. As the lights go out and the music shorts, a fog rolls into the living room. Matt's friends have nowhere to run as the demon, Ba'al, emerges from the darkness and violently murders them all. Matt enters the room to see the remains of the massacre and it is he who's blamed for the deaths.

Liv visits Matt in prison and gets the truth from him. He had it all, but he never wanted kids and eventually, he didn't want her; he just wanted the money. Matt begs her to believe him-- it was the demon. She hangs up the phone and leaves him to rot in jail.

That night, during a storm, Liv rocks her baby and looks ahead to the future as the demon, Ba'al, appears before her. As it turns out, the book Bernadette gave her didn't supply her with a fake banishment spell, but a real summoning spell, and when Liv tried it a second time, it worked, leaving the demon at her disposal. Before she sends Ba'al away, she brings it to bed; she's ready for her second child.
