In the year 1961 in Natchez, Mississippi, a young woman by the name of Coby pulls up to the Van Wirt Toy Company for an interview with the owner, Van Wirt himself. Coby's CV doesn't betray her over-qualification; she's more than capable of filling the secretary role posted at the factory.

Despite this, however, she's not qualified for the position. He turns to leave and says his assistant will see her out, but she's instead grabbed from behind, drugged, and taken away.

Coby awakens to the sound of a doorbell to find herself surrounded by dolls. She's told, by Van Wirt, that she's on his estate-- his very own dollhouse-- and the beautiful home there will be her home for the next seven days, give or take. He was absolutely impressed with her qualifications, but she's a better fit for something more important than the job.

It's why she's there to participate in 'The Pageant'. She demands to be let go-- she can't be left there alone-- but she's told she's not alone.

As he locks her into the home, a series of the dolls standing in the room reveal themselves to be real women, all part of Van Wirt's horrific game.

Answer: In a wishing well

The other women let Coby know what's at stake. They've all been in the contest for quite a while, having participated in a series of tasks already, all attempting to impress the crazy toymaker, Van Wirt, enough to convince him who's the perfect doll and the ideal mother for his kid. Whoever doesn't make the grade is eliminated in the worst way.

Some of the girls have been in the house for weeks. As Coby gazes out the window at Van Wirt's house, she sees someone staring at them from across the yard.

When she asks about the boy watching them, she's told it's Van Wirt's son, Otis, whose mother went out into the swamp to pick flowers and a horrible accident befell her. The rumour is that Van Wirt killed her upon discovering her infidelity, tossing her into an old wishing well on the property.

Answer: Clown

A bell rings out in the house and the girls spring into action. For the first time, Coby is told to head to the closet and find an outfit; she'll be required to dress up and pose, in place, like a human doll, not speaking and not moving. She chooses a clown outfit, and when Van Wirt and Otis enter the house, she's already posed, seated in the sitting room. Van Wirt leaves the boy to play with his new toys while he heads to work and it's immediately clear that Otis isn't interested in clowns. He changes his tune, however, when Coby performs a magic trick, moving a toy fire truck along the floor with her mind.

Answer: Faye

The other girls confront Coby about the 'magic trick' and Aurelia calls her out for trying to pass off weird voodoo to keep herself in the game. She vows to win, suggesting that she has tricks up her sleeve as well, but their conversation ends when the bell rings, prompting a real test for the human dolls. Van Wirt tests them with lunch, suggesting that they will need to bring their etiquette to the table, literally, as they set places for crawfish cardinale, terrapin soup, and assorted ices and pies.

They will be graded for precision and will only have a minute to complete their task, and the one who makes the most mistakes will be discarded. Coby is nearly eliminated, but she's spared when another girl, Faye, makes more mistakes. The others watch out the window as she's tossed down the well.

Otis returns to the dollhouse in the coming days, curious about Coby's ability to make his toys move on their own. She admits that she's always been able to move things with her mind, and it's a secret she's lived with her entire life, leaving home to avoid telling her family. Otis confides in Coby that he no longer goes to school and that he misses his mother.

He also tells her that he secretly hopes she'll win and become his mother, though she admits she would only do so if his father stopped throwing old dolls down the well. That night, Otis goes to confront his father, but he changes his mind at the last second.

The girls return to the sitting room for their next test for which they are required to combine herbs and perform a top-tier ironing and folding of a men's shirt within three minutes. As with the other tests, if they make the most mistakes, they will be discarded. Coby manages to leave a scorch mark on her shirt and, as punishment, Van Wirt burns her hand with her iron.

It is, however, Faye, who is discarded; Van Wirt's assistant stabs her multiple times before she's tossed away. Before departing, Van Wirt informs them that they have one more day before a decision is made.

Answer: Out the front door

Coby and Harlene contemplate their possible last night alive as they tend to Coby's burn and both realize that it's far too late for them to create an offence against Van Wirt and his associate. Coby does, however, get a bold idea. Aurelia, however, heads downstairs to investigate the toys in the sitting room, checking the fire truck for evidence of Coby's tricks. What she does find is a loose piece of furniture stuck with a thick screw; she spins it loose, races upstairs, and stabs what she thinks is Coby in the back. Fortunately, it's just a doll made to look like Coby, a dummy made to stand in her place.

They convince her with the plan-- Otis and Van Wirt love dolls, so they'll give them dolls. They'll escape out the front door and, with their head-start, hopefully have time to traverse the ten miles into civilization without getting caught.

The dollhouse bell rings one more time, late in the evening, as Van Wirt and his associate arrive. The girls, hiding behind a curtain, wait until the men have entered and started speaking to the dummies before Coby uses her powers to turn the front doorknob and the three flee into the darkness. Aurelie and Harlene flee but Coby refuses to leave without Otis, and it's because of this that she's not found, running in the swamp, like the others.

They're quickly found by Van Wirt's associate, shot, and killed. Coby heads into the house to find Otis and ask him to come with her but he shocks her with a taser instead; the men retrieve her when they've captured the others.

Answer: Witches

Though she's the last girl remaining and told that she will be the one to act as Otis' mother, Coby finds, when she awakens, that her fate is sealed more than she believed. Placed into a large, metal mold, she's told that she passed the final test in caring for Otis, and as a reward, she will be made into a life-sized doll. She screams as the mold closes over her.

Over the weeks, Coby begins to come into her own as a living doll, but she's saved from her terrible fate when two witches arrive to take them into her coven. They free her from the porcelain shell baked upon her and, with Otis in tow, remove her from the dollhouse, leaving Van Wirt and his associate inside before they set them, and it, ablaze.

Coby and Otis inevitably arrive on the doorstep of Miss Robichaux's Academy where they live out the remainder of their days. As Coby joins the ranks of the coven, Otis meets a young Myrtle Snow and goes by his middle name, Spalding.
