1. How are people able to reach Reedsville?

A group of friends ride a pontoon boat out into a lake on a sunny day. One of their group, excited about a topographical map he found at a local library, lets the others know that the lake is on the destroyed town of Reedsville, and they can get to it because of the recent drought. Two of them, brother and sister Jake and Finn, suit up to dive in and see it for themselves, swimming through the murky water to the lake's floor. It's not long before they start finding evidence of what they came looking for...but that's when something grabs onto Jake's leg, tightly, and holds him underwater. Finn surfaces to scream for help, and when she comes back, something pulls him under the sand.

Marci, partying out at a club, gets a drink and complains about the poor quality of the night. She and her friend grab a drink at the bar when she spies a guy watching her across the room. When the guy comes over, the two flirt. He introduces himself as Wyatt and they dance together for the rest of the evening. The two have sex in her car and the night ends on a sour note when Wyatt complains that she'll probably ask for his number, text every day, and move too fast-- just like his ex. After Marci kicks him out, she drives home alone. On the highway she's pursued by a man in a Jeep flashing his lights and riding on her bumper. She speeds ahead, believing she lost him, but he rams into the back of her vehicle when she's not expecting. She swerves down a side road, losing him as she turns into a car wash. It's a good enough hiding spot; the Jeep doesn't find her there.

Her husband, Bryce, isn't happy with the purchase; they spent a lot of money for security already. She assures him that her store opens in a week and she can cover it. Twenty years earlier, while Jaslyn slept in her bed, she was awakened by the sound of a home invader entering her room through the window, coming in to kill her parents.

They claim to have rented the house for the night; the owners have offered it up as an AirBNB 'Escape From the Murder House' experience. They grab their bag and head inside. There's plenty to keep the couple occupied when they enter the building; a note on the kitchen counter welcomes them and directs them to follow the black rose petals up to the bedroom where Violet and Tate consummated their relationship. After a glass of wine, they waste no time.

Driving his family out into the woods, Jay is excited to experience nature with his wife, Addy, and his young son, Jacob. Neither Addy nor Jacob is all too interested in going back to basics, but as they drive into Kern Canyon National Park, they're at the very least prepared to tough it out camping under the stars. They pull into a formal campground and pass deep through the woods to a formal site on a marshy lake. It's more remote than anticipated, but they have plenty of space all to themselves. They finally start to relax when night falls.

Liv and Matt sit in front of Liv's fertility doctor as they hear the bad news-- the in vitro-fertilization didn't succeed and, to the doctor's recommendation, they may need to consider adoption or surrogacy. Liv is upset with the suggestion as she wants nothing more than her own pregnancy. She doesn't care about the cost or the diminishing chances with each procedure; she wants to try again. They'll try again in eight weeks. As Matt heads out to grab the car, Liv sets up the next appointment at the front desk. The receptionist, Bernadette, sympathizes with Liv's efforts but offers up something...a little weird. Taking a fertility totem from her desk drawer, she gives it over, claiming it's an old Sumerian (or maybe Babylonian) trick. You place it under your bed, you get a baby. Liv rolls her eyes, but Bernadette says it's been in her family for a very long time. She might as well try. She has, after all, tried everything else.

In Hollywood, California, the Bro House, a content house of four college(-or-a-bit-later)-aged social media personalities, turn out videos for massive amounts of viewers. Zinn, Wyatt, James, and Barry, make a point of creating care-free, crazy posts and uploads for likes and subscriptions, and the more outlandish they get, the more response they generate. Zinn is the 'Bad Boy', Wyatt is the 'Heartthrob', Barry is the '3.8 GPA', and James is the 'Pretty Boy'; all of them are influencers and they're all friends. Their big fear, however, is that they're getting older. They need to keep living on the edge or they risk losing their fanbase.

Dating couple Kelley and Chad spend their night making out in Kelley's bed but it's apparent that Chad wants more. The couple, having been dating for six months, are at a crossroads. Chad, impatient with the rate at which their physical relationship is developing, asks Kelley for more while putting down her excuses. She claims that their relationship isn't a race though, and she asks him not to rush. Their night ends with the argument. When Chad tells his friends at the skate park about the night, they say he's got it all wrong. Though he turned on Bob Ross to get Kelley into a good mood, he should have put on a horror movie instead. Girls, his friends note, are much more likely to sleep with him if they experience fear. It's just instinct.

Scarlett sits in the backseat of her parents' car en route to their new home. Everyone seems in good spirits-- including her, even though she can barely tolerate her fathers singing along to "A Whiter Shade of Pale" on the radio. She texts her friend, Shanti, saying that she can't believe where they're moving-- they're off to Los Angeles. It's only a matter of time before they pull up in front of their new abode, a building known to many in the area as a murder house. Scarlett wanders the building for the first time on her own to find that the place is a bit of a wreck. As she moves into her new bedroom, she settles in. Her parents, meanwhile, plan their renovations; they plan to flip the house.

Her mother and father worry that they brought her home too soon, but a couple more weeks in a mental health clinic, they reason, wasn't going to help her mourn. As she leaves the room, her parents argue. Jeffrey, allegedly swamped with work, doesn't talk anymore, and Erin wonders if he's hiding himself away in it. All of them struggle with the loss. That night, when Erin checks in on her daughter, Finn asks what they placed in Jake's casket, since a body was never found. Mementos, her mother explains; she turned it into a time capsule. Finn just wishes she was there.

Virginia ends up at the wine shop dressed in her nicest casual outfit and, unsurprisingly, runs into Bernie when he comes in. He comments that she looks positively wonderful and the two flirt a bit, but the organized run-in comes to a halt when Bernie's current fling, Cassie Brooks, interrupts the chat. As it turns out, Cassie, who looks quite radiant, went to college with Virginia; they lived in the same dorm. As the couple finishes their shopping, Virginia has to ask Cassie how she keeps looking so young. Diet and exercise, Virginia claims, are the key, but Virginia calls out the lie. She agrees to stay away from Bernie, and that's enough for Cassie. She hands over a card for Dr. Enid Perle, M.D. F.A.C.S., and tells her to call and book an appointment.

As the girls turn out the lights and light a candle, they all say Bloody Mary's name three times in their mirrors and, sure enough, the spirit appears before each of them, insisting that if they listen to what she asks them to do then she will reward them. The girls, terrified, pull themselves away only to find Maggie being killed in the bathroom by Mary's clawed fingers. When they turn on the lights, however, it appears to be nothing but a hallucination. Maggie claims that she wasn't harmed, but she did see Bloody Mary. The girls reveal the cost of the futures they want: Bianca can get a full ride to Yale, but not without personal abuse; Lena can be cheer captain, but only if she drops a girl from the top of the pyramid; Maggie can be with the boyfriend she wants, but she needs to steal his current girlfriend's nudes and put them on the internet; Elise can be rich, but at a cost. The girls are scared. Bianca knows that Bloody Mary is coming for them, but they have no choice besides living their lives. Bianca realizes, that night, how much she really wants what Mary promised. Neither of the girls see Bloody Mary in a reflection, watching them go to sleep.

She's told, by Van Wirt, that she's on his estate-- his very own dollhouse-- and the beautiful home there will be her home for the next seven days, give or take. She demands to be let go-- she can't be left there alone-- but she's told she's not alone. As he locks her into the home, a series of the dolls standing in the room reveal themselves to be real women, all part of Van Wirt's horrific game.

One stormy night, Liv places the fertility totem under her and Matt's bed. She thinks she's crazy for even considering it, but there's no reason not to try nothing. The pair head to bed contemplating their lives-- Matt and his aim to become an actor, Liv and her substantial inheritance-- but they reassure each other that they're there for one another's goals. That night, during the storm, they conceive their child. Sixteen months later, Liv struggles with the new arrival, Aaron, believing that she doesn't seem to know how to take care of her own child. Her postpartum depression overwhelms her on the regular even though she has help. And then there are the noises she keeps hearing. Liv seemed to forget about the totem altogether. Checking under her bed and finding it, she decides to toss it into a box in the closet and forget about it.

Chad's in luck, according to his friends, because despite the dreck that gets released in the horror genre (to fill up streaming sites), drive in movie theatres are making a big comeback, especially with a dedicated film crowd. In fact, a filmmaker has announced a rare screening of 'Rabbit, Rabbit', an infamous horror print, that was only ever shown once in 1986. The first time it was shown, six people were massacred at the theatre. The survivors claimed that the audience turned on itself, killing each other...because of the film. The director was hauled in front of Congress and went to prison. But that's besides the point; they have a spare ticket for their vehicle, and if they go, they get to watch what is, allegedly, the most dangerous film ever made. It's the perfect scenario to get Kelley in the mood.

Scarlett has apprehensions about the new home believing the place to be a bit of a money pit, especially with the notoriety behind it. The house, however, is the most famous haunted establishment on the West Coast, and if they can flip it then they can market haunted getaways to a group of people eager to spend money on the experience. They have no concern with the alleged curse; ghosts aren't real. Scarlett is promised that no matter what happens, they won't end up homeless and she'll have enough money to go to college. Scarlett's worries aren't assuaged. As she unpacks her things, a ball rolls into her room through the open door. She puts it down and thinks nothing of it until it rolls into the room again. She goes looking for the culprit but finds something different from what she expected-- a latex gimp suit, hanging in the closet of another room.

On the way out from work, Sam can't help but speak to Charlie about his whisper to the deceased, but he says it was a private matter. They formally introduce one another before he comes clean; he thanked the decedent for allowing him to escort her to Sam since it's an honour to help someone finish the journey to the afterlife. At home, Sam runs a bath and uses the lavender oil Jesse bought her. When Jesse gets home, she suggests they go out to dinner. They stay in instead, heading straight to the bedroom. Sam, however, finds that she can't help but think of her new coworker.

The girls end up at school the day after their Bloody Mary visits, but all of them appear to have barely slept. While Lena forgets that she has cheer practice, she, Elise and Maggie, by sheer coincidence, start a physics unit on reflections. During their class, their teacher flips a whiteboard around to show a massive mirror which, to them, starts to crack. The apparition of Bloody Mary appears before them and reminds each that they have a pact with her that they must deliver on. Lena tells the other girls that they need to listen to Mary because following through with her requests is better than being killed. Many years ago, her mother wasn't invited to a slumber party, but she found out that all the other girls who went either died or went to a psych ward because of the Bloody Mary legend. Elise reassures her sister that she'll be fine; they won't die.

As Jaslyn brushes her teeth and prepares to go to bed, she gets another alert from her Aura. This time, when she opens the app, someone appears to be at her door-- an old man hunched over staring directly into the device. This man, who knows her by name, asks her repeatedly to open the door. He tells her she doesn't need to be afraid, but upon his further insistence, she calls 911. Bryce returns home to find the police in his house and that Jaslyn is safe, but shaken. While the police ask questions, their neighbour, Juan, stops by to let them know he installed a camera over his garage a month earlier and he should have footage to provide. When they and the cops investigate, however, they find that no one was there until the police arrived. There's no recording on the Aura either. The police can't do much besides run the man's description through the system.

The other women let Coby know what's at stake. They've all been in the contest for quite a while, having participated in a series of tasks already, all attempting to impress the crazy toymaker, Van Wirt, enough to convince him who's the perfect doll and the ideal mother for his kid. Whoever doesn't make the grade is eliminated in the worst way. Some of the girls have been in the house for weeks. As Coby gazes out the window at Van Wirt's house, she sees someone staring at them from across the yard. When she asks about the boy watching them, she's told it's Van Wirt's son, Otis, whose mother went out into the swamp to pick flowers and a horrible accident befell her. The rumour is that Van Wirt killed her upon discovering her infidelity, tossing her into an old wishing well on the property.

When her son, Rory, loses the "American Horror Story" video game, Michelle is a bit disappointed that there are still bugs in her build. While the graphics look great, Rory is more frustrated that the game revisits the murder house but doesn't stay true to the season. Addie, for instance, never returned as a ghost since she died off the property; Bloodyface was in "Asylum" while Twisty the Clown was only in "Freak Show" and "Cult". Rory is a superfan of the show and Michelle is not. He explains that she's not getting it. She needs the game to work out, and she thought it would be a way she could connect with her son. Rory decides to go to his dad's for a few weeks.

Matt returns home from an acting gig, a bit part as a corpse on "NCIS", to find Liv wandering the house. There on the suggestion of their housekeeper, Norma, he reiterates that he's trying his best to contribute to the family. He doesn't want to live solely off of Liv's inheritance. This said, Liv knows she needs support; she feels like she's losing it. Matt, on his agent's recommendation, suggests that she speak to an M.D. in hormone and postpartum disorders. Matt returns to work as Liv heads to bed, and moments before she's about to fall asleep she hears the baby monitor. Looking up at the tablet perched on her nightstand she can see her baby's room... and the devilish figure looming over the crib. She races into the nursery to find the room empty, even though something appears to be standing right behind her on the tablet screen.

Chad watches old C-SPAN footage when he hears the story about 'Rabbit, Rabbit', mostly out of curiosity of its history, and what he finds is that Tipper Gore, concerned about violent content, brought the director, Larry Bitterman, to Washington D.C. to stand trial. There, it was determined that all copies of his film be pulled from theatres and destroyed by the production company. Bitterman would subsequently lash out against Gore in front of the cameras, and that was what sent him to jail.

As the days pass at the murder house, Michael and Trey are met by a pair of detectives investigating the cases of four missing girls, all of whom were responsible for livestreaming Scarlett in front of the school and all of whom she killed in the basement of the house. Neither of her parents are aware of this, however, and when the detectives inform them of Scarlett's call to Maya on the night of the disappearance and their phones being tracked to the house, they aren't sure how to explain it. That night, Scarlett is visited by Maya and the other girls she killed, and before they can exact their revenge, Ruby appears to protect her. Fortunately, her strength is enough to scare the others away.

As Erin starts to dig deeper into the alleged curse at Lake Prescott, Jeffrey takes the opportunity to admit that he was wrong. Not only did he hide himself away in work to cope with Jake's death and disappearance, but they need to move forward if not for their sake, then for Finn's. He promises that he'll change and be stronger, but Erin says they just need him to be here. Finn, in bed, struggles to fall asleep because she can't stop thinking about the last moments she saw Jake in the lake. Erin, meanwhile, awakens to the sound of a faucet turning on in the kitchen. When it refuses to stay off (despite her attempts), she's shocked again by the sound of the backdoor slamming open. Outside, the pool runoff overflows. As she shuts it off, the drowned spectre of Jake appears behind her and asks her to find him.

At work, Sam asks Charlie about the afterlife and the two go about their tasks while discussing their favourite death rites from around the world. He eventually asks her: what's the most interesting thing she's ever eaten? When he realizes how non-adventurous she is, he suggests he might need to free her from her existence a bit. Sam comes to find out, when prying into Charlie's life a bit, that his family has passed away. One day, when they took a drive to Zion to see the sights, he and his entire family were in a car crash. He claims that it brought everything into clear focus for him. He saw how precious life was and how the living needed to take care of the dead and honour them. Trauma, Sam tells Charlie, is complicated. She didn't lose her parents in a car crash, but she was affected by death. She nearly opens up to her new coworker, but her phone rings.

Bianca stresses as she speaks to her teacher about her Yale admissions essay. While he urges her to express her desperation more clearly, she complains that despite her troubles, she's a straight-A student and should not be having this much trouble. As he touches her hand, she hears the sound of a mirror on the wall, cracking, and turns to find a reflection depicting her teacher hanging by his neck, a grisly image of the future. Worriedly, she leaves, intending to start a new draft. Elise studies up on Bloody Mary on her computer, coming across the legend of Margaret Worth, a slave catcher and Underground Railroad murderer. Maggie, meanwhile, chats with her ex-boyfriend in the school halls before his new girlfriend arrives. In her locker mirror, she sees an image of the two of them kissing, the new girlfriend bloodied by Mary's claw nails. Lena heads to cheer practice and has her own, new apparition, seeing one of her cheer team members with a broken neck in the reflection. Bianca tells her to give Elise more time; she'll find answers.

Walter and Thomas, with Rachel on a table before them, say one final prayer before Thomas takes a knife and prepares to plunge it into his wife's chest. He finds he can't do it, however, so Walter is the one to make the cut, cutting in and removing the organ in short order. When Walter takes it out, Thomas makes the off-handed comment that it's believed, by some, that eating the hart protects one from smallpox. The rumour is enough to convince the pastor; he bites into the heart in an attempt to prevent himself from getting the affliction. Walter reminds him to think of his son. It's why Thomas brings it home and prepares it as part of their family meal.

Michelle throws on some old episodes of "American Horror Story" to continue her research but days of trawling through "Murder House" only allow her to get so far in understanding the deep, emotional core of the show. She ends up at the house one day, taking a tour of the property and speaking to the real estate agent about the possibility of owning the house. Due to its obvious, sordid history, the bank is willing to sell it for land value (about $600,000) or best offer. Michelle offers a sixth of that price (though she doesn't have the money). Her plan? Simply get inside and let the secrets roll out before her.

But there's something different about Bob's information compared to all the reporters who stop by Jay's place. Bob is an eyewitness.
