Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shown on ABC, this show is a cult drama starring Matthew Fox.

Answer: "Lost"

When it first aired in 2004, 'Lost' caused a sensation, and quickly gained a cult following. I hope it's not too dismissive of me to sum the show up as "Gilligan's Island" meets "The Twilight Zone."
2. Food Network features an exciting lineup of cooking, travel, reality, and food competition programs. Which of these shows, hosted by Alton Brown, first aired only on Food Network?

Answer: "Good Eats"

Another of Alton's projects was "Feasting on Asphalt," a motorcycle tour of the
various local cuisines of the U.S.A. Like many TV series personalities, he has become a spokesperson / pitchman for at least one marketer in his field of expertise.

Alton Brown's quirky humor and rock-solid food know-how are certainly attractive, and Food Network offers many other entertaining and informative programs, including "Iron Chef America," "Everyday Italian" with Giada De Laurentiis, "Chopped," and "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" with Guy Fieri.
3. One fun and popular reality series on TLC features fashion-unconscious victims who get wardrobe makeovers from hosts Stacy London and Clinton Kelly.

Answer: "What Not to Wear"

Stacy and Clinton are serious about their philosophy: they strongly believe that appropriate and stylish clothing will help a person feel confident and valuable. While the "victim" (an individual nominated for the show by family and friends) is usually a lady, gentlemen occasionally get makeovers on the show as well.

Have you noticed Stacy's face on various beauty and household products? It seems that everywhere I look, I see her promoting some product or another. She must be a busy woman!
4. Complete the name of the (American) PBS series in which people bring in treasured objects to be appraised by experts: "Antiques ___________".

Answer: Roadshow

Originating in the U.K., 'Antiques Roadshow' has been popular in several countries for many years. As its name implies, the show travels from city to city, allowing local residents to bring their collectibles in for evaluation. Most viewers look forward to certain types of items; personally, I enjoy the jewelry and the musical instruments.
5. After kiddies' bedtimes, Cartoon Network airs original and syndicated programming that is definitely not for young viewers. What do they call this late-night lineup?

Answer: "Adult Swim"

To transition viewers from from program segments to commercial breaks and back, Adult Swim will often present "bumps", short commentaries on various topics in the format of a slide show (usually white lettering on black backgrounds, with the occasional photograph, all to the accompaniment of suitably eclectic music). I find myself watching almost as much for the bumps as for the programming itself.
6. An original GSN (Game Show Network) show asks contestants to guess five-letter words. What is this program, hosted by the smooth-talking Chuck Woolery?

Answer: "Lingo"

I made up "Pentagrams," but "20Q" and "Chain Reaction" are real programs that air on GSN.

Part of "Lingo" involves the contestants drawing rubber balls printed with numbers that correspond to numbers on the game board. They need to get five numbers in a row to make a "Lingo" - like bingo. Get it? Most of the balls are blue in color, but if you draw a red one (called a "stopper"), you lose your turn and play passes to the other team.
7. A popular program on Discovery has its hosts perform quasi-scientific experiments to confirm or refute popular notions and misconceptions. What is this show, hosted by Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman?

Answer: "Mythbusters"

In addition to the "Head Mythbusters" (Jamie and Adam), the show includes a second group of Mythbusters: Tory, Grant, and Kari. They also carry out experiments and conduct research in an effort to prove or disprove the "myths" suggested by the show's producers and fans.

Some classic myths explored over the course of the series are the rocket car, the construction worker's plywood parachute, and Mentos + Diet Coke = a mammoth fountain of bubbles.
8. Can you name the animated series shown on Fox whose dysfunctional characters include a nerdy son, a rebellious daughter, a talking goldfish, and a neurotic alien?

Answer: "American Dad"

Seth MacFarlane, whose voice talent is so versatile it's almost scary, plays Stan Smith (the title character) as well as Roger the Alien. Also known for his controversial "Family Guy" series, MacFarlane is truly a master of vocal disguise.
9. What is the title of the documentary series shown on the History Channel that examines the history of various technologies and inventions that have changed civilization?

Answer: "Modern Marvels"

"Modern Marvels" is narrated by Max Raphael, who narrates other History Channel series as well. Most regular viewers can readily recognize his distinctive and pleasantly intense voice.

The series has run for many years, and has covered hundreds of diverse topics, including "Air Force One," "Casino Tech," "Magnets," and "Coffee."
10. A&E's diverse lineup features reality, true crime, drama, home improvement programming, and much more. Which A&E series, hosted by Roger Hazard and the outgoing hottie Tanya Memme, helps frustrated homeowners turn their decor around and get their houses sold?

Answer: "Sell This House"

The mania over home improvement and "house-flipping" series has waned, following a few years of numerous competing series choking the airwaves.

If you guessed "Home Improvement," that is the sitcom starring Tim Allen, not a reality or do-it-yourself show.
