Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If a Tamarian were trying to explain something to someone, and after many attempts they finally understood, what would the Tamarian say?

Answer: "Sokath, his eyes uncovered"

This was said by both Dathon and the Tamarian first officer when they realized Picard finally understood what their metaphors meant. Sokath must have been, to borrow a word from Q, a "dullard."
2. Two Tamarians walk into a bar... After a while the hour grows late and it's time to go. What would they say to indicate this?

Answer: "Mirab, his sails unfurled"

This is one of the easier-to-grasp Tamarian metaphors, probably from before their space-faring days. It was spoken by the first officer at the end of the episode.
3. We all know someone who won't listen to reason and won't consider alternatives. How would a Tamarian describe someone like that?

Answer: "Kiteo, his eyes closed"

When Riker tells the Tamarian first officer that he better return Picard to the Enterprise, the Tamarian essentially tells Riker that he doesn't want to hear his objections.
4. Imagine yourself as a Tamarian: you nicely explain something to someone and it's obvious they just don't get it. You might chuckle and say what?

Answer: "Kadir beneath Mo Moteh"

Looking back on the episode, Dathon was being very gracious in his welcome to Picard. At Picard's obvious failure to comprehend, the Tamarian first officer had a laugh as though to say: "I knew they wouldn't understand."
5. Let's say you slip and fall in the street on an icy day. Someone asks if you are all right. If you wanted to shrug it off as of no consequence, what Tamarian phrase would you use?

Answer: "Kiazi's children, their faces wet"

After Dathon was injured by the beast, he waved off Picard's concerns with this phrase. It would indicate that he wasn't going to cry for no good reason.
6. If you anger a Tamarian, what is he likely to say just before he throws a punch at you?

Answer: "Zinda, his face black, his eyes red"

When Riker opened fire on the Tamarian ship to disable their scattering field, that was the reply he got from the Tamarian first officer. The Tamarians fired back at the Enterprise but their field generator was disabled and Picard got to the bridge in time to quell the fighting.
7. Do you know someone who goes on and on about any given subject? How would a Tamarian tell them to stop talking?

Answer: "Temarc, the river Temarc, in winter"

This is how Dathan silenced his first officer when the two were arguing about how Dathan and Picard could come to an understanding.
8. If you've had a day when absolutely nothing has gone right and you're very discouraged, how would a Tamarian respond if someone asked: "How was your day?

Answer: "Shaka, when the walls fell"

If you're a fan of this episode you were just waiting for this one, weren't you? Poor Shaka, he was either too close to the walls when they collapsed or the collapse allowed his enemies to get to him. Either way he had the worst kind of bad day.
9. If you were about to do something nice for a Tamarian, how would you communicate that to him or her?

Answer: "Temba, his arms wide"

Dathon says this when he throws Picard a burning log to start a fire on a cold night on El-Adrel IV. Picard repeats it when he offers to return Dathon's knife to the Tamarian first officer. It can also mean asking for something.
10. How would Tamarians describe a shared struggle or a bonding through trial?

Answer: All are correct

This was the point of the episode: bringing people together while fighting for a common cause; in this case Dathon and Picard fighting the beast at El-Adrel. We never did find out about Zima and Bakor, but the Tamarian first officer suggested them when Dathon wanted to use the Darmok scenario. Maybe the first officer thought of it as an alternate plan, or maybe he thought the Darmok scenario would fail like Zima and Bakor might have.
