Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the Federation first arrived on Deep Space Nine, Garak sought out Doctor Bashir and introduced himself. Bashir was nervous and blurted out that he'd heard Garak stayed on DS9 to observe the Federation. Garak replied: "You're not intimating that I'm __________, are you?" What are the missing words?

Answer: some sort of spy

"It's just Garak, plain, simple Garak", he said in "Past Prologue."
2. In "Improbable Cause", Dr. Bashir told Garak the story of "The boy who cried wolf." Bashir ended by saying the point of the story was to always tell the truth. What did Garak think the point might really be?

Answer: "Never tell the same lie twice."

As was often the case after talking to Garak, Bashir was left speechless.
3. One of Dr. Bashir's favorite holoprograms was one involving the life of a 20th-century spy, obviously based on James Bond. Garak walked into the holosuite while the program was in progress. What was his reaction to seeing Bashir's valet (the sexy Mona Lovesit), the swanky high-rise apartment and the trappings of a bon-vivant?

Answer: "I think I joined the wrong intelligence service."

So said Garak in "Our Man Bashir".
4. Sisko, Dax, Odo and Garak went to a conference on Bajor about the former occupation by Cardassia. On the way back, Garak said he thought the Bajorans tried to dismiss almost everything he had to say. Sisko disagreed but Garak said that giving him a name tag that read "Elim Garak ________" was hardly polite. What is the missing phrase?

Answer: former Cardassian oppressor

In "Things Past" Garak thought he had much to offer on the Cardassian thought process involved in the occupation.
5. Deep Space Nine was having mechanical problems so a team was assembled to go to Empok Nor, a former Cardassian space station of the same design as DS9, to get some replacement parts. On the way, Chief O'Brien said he was glad Garak was going with them. Garak was a bit surprised and replied: "It's just that lately, I've noticed that everyone seems to trust me." What else did he say?

Answer: "It's quite unnerving"

It was fortunate that Garak went along because, in "Empok Nor", they were surprised by Cardassian guards who had been left there in stasis, in case anyone came to the station. Garak helped "neutralize" the problem.
6. In "Cardassians", Garak and Dr. Bashir went to a Bajoran resettlement center looking for information about a Cardassian orphan, Rugel, left there when the Cardassians withdrew and who was adopted by Bajorans. The computers weren't working but Garak offered to "have a look at them" and got the system running again. Bashir said he didn't know Garak could fix computers. What was Garak's reply?

Answer: "It's a hobby of mine"

Maybe Garak took a correspondence course over subspace relay.
7. In "Things Past" Garak, Sisko, Dax and Odo seemed to find themselves on Deep Space Nine when it was Terok Nor, run by the Cardassians. Garak stole a tricorder-like device from a Cardassian guard. When Odo found out about it, he said he would have to add the word "pickpocket" to Garak's resume. What did Garak say in response?

Answer: "It's only a hobby."

It seems Garak had several, shall we say, "unusual" hobbies.
8. Garak and Doctor Bashir discussed many things, including being true to family as opposed to the state. In "Profit and Loss" they were arguing about a Trelonian general who had his brother executed as a traitor. Bashir said you must be true to yourself first. What was Garak's reply?

Answer: "With sentiments like those, you wouldn't last five seconds on Cardassia."

In this episode Garak was offered a chance to return to Cardassia if he would kill three Cardassian dissidents who had arrived on Deep Space Nine. Just as he was about to do so, Garak sensed that it was a lie and killed the Cardassian Gul who had made the offer.
9. In "Way of the Warrior" Garak watched as Odo shooed away three Klingons who were bothering Morn. One of the Klingons insulted Odo in Klingon. Garak told the Klingon he wasn't sure Odo had a mother. Odo didn't know Garak spoke Klingon, to which Garak said "Oh, you'd be surprised at the things you can learn _________." What is the missing phrase?

Answer: when you're doing alterations

Garak must have had a busier shop than we thought.
10. As Garak and Dr. Bashir were waiting in line for lunch, Garak suffered a migraine headache. He brushed it off but soon had another sharp pain in his head. Bashir was unable to get Garak to go to sickbay. The next day Garak passed out from a seizure. In Sick Bay, Bashir found that Garak had some sort of device implanted in his brain; the device was malfunctioning. After ten days, Bashir got the implant under control, then asked Garak to explain some of the things he had said about his past while delirious from the pain. Garak said they were all true. Bashir asked about the obvious lies. What did Garak say?

Answer: "Especially the lies."

As we learned in "The Wire", the implant was put in to administer endorphins should Garak be tortured, thereby lessening the pain. As fans of the series probably suspected, he considered being exiled from Cardassia and living on Deep Space Nine as torture. He turned the implant on full-time, for which it was not engineered.
