In actual fact, she is using Susan's flat for an intimate liaison with Patrick but none of the others are aware that there has been chemistry between Patrick and Sally. In true 'Coupling' style, this is revealed to everyone at the furniture shop.

Jeff and Steve are both familiar with the 'Melty Man' and are in fact uncomfortable at the mention of his name. Patrick encounters the 'Melty Man' first in the bathroom whilst preparing for a romantic interlude with Sally. By the time he leaves the bathroom, he discovers that Sally has gone. We observe that he places his wine glass near to Sally's, a symbol that Jane mentions earlier in the episode as showing that a man is attracted to a woman.

It speaks in an American accent and manages to offend all who come into contact with it - including Jane herself! He is hurt when she fails to recognise him and engineers a situation so that she is forced to notice. Unfortunately for Patrick, she appears to believe that he's her gay ex-cleaner, Wilf and therefore Jeff is assumed to be Patrick's boyfriend.

It is only later that we realise firstly that she knew all along that Patrick was not Wilf, and secondly that it's not the mother but the daughter!

Jane tells Sally, Susan and a shocked Patrick in the salon that she has a choice of two dresses to wear for her dinner date with Bill and that she has chosen the third! She is caught short when she mistakenly exchanges her coat for a doll-size dress Bill's neighbour. Needless to say, Bill isn't seen in the series again!

Julia is a senior manager at Jeff's firm but there is a mutual attraction. They share a heated kiss when Jeff is leaving for the evening. He waits in the conference room, confident that Julia will be joining him shortly and begins to remove his clothes in a strip tease. Little does she know that there is actually a surprise party for him in that very room.

The icing on the cake is when his parents enter the room. Earlier in the episode, Jeff told the group how his mother always said 'Oh Jeffrey' and that's just what she says on discovering her son naked.

It doesn't work out quite as bad for Jeff in the end because Julia also does a strip tease for him once all the guests have gone.
