Dr. Mike went in the barn only to find Red McCall milking her cow. He ordered her into the barn and closed the door. With the baby sick, she offered to take care of him which he was reluctant to do but yielded.

Sully went to speak to the men to have them spare enough buffaloes for the Cheyenne Indians to survive on for the winter. Their response was a vicious beating leaving Sully in a ditch with a dead Indian, unconscious and paralyzed from the waist down.

After the baby came to stay with them, Colleen came across a trunk full of baby clothes that were supposed to be Sully's child's clothes. When he saw the baby clothes on the clothes line he became upset, telling them they had no right.

Thaddeus Birch claimed to be an attorney at law working for the railroad. His proposition was for the railroad to come right through the center of town. The depot would be where the saloon was, loading chutes where the clinic was and two story hotel with a genuine crystal chandelier where the mercantile was.

John Schneider played Red McCall in this episode but returned later on as a different character. He returned as Sully's best friend Daniel Simon who was in the season five episode "A House Divided" and in season six's "Reason to Believe".

Cloud Dancing went searching for Sully after he didn't return and found him in the ditch speaking "Michaela". He carried Sully over to the homestead unconscious. This particular episode was nominated for a Prime Time Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Makeup for a Series.

After missing Sunday services, Dr. Mike went to check on him at the Reverend's request. She found him near death but he managed to say "bear" before succumbing to his injuries. The bear showed up just as she was finishing burying Mr. Silver and she (more like her stunt double) ran back into the cabin.

Cloud Dancing brought some root for her to ground into a salve and told her to bathe him in warm water. So Dr. Mike and Matthew applied the salve and took him to the hot springs for treatment.

He had robbed Loren just as he was about to open up for the day. When Sully came across his camp he found Dr. Mike's horse and asked where she was. Feeling guilty after Sully talked to him, Red McCall returned all the money.
