Daniel Simon was a long-time friend of Sully who was by now a wealthy miner. He came with what he considered Sully's share of the mine which would help them pay off the mortgage on the homestead. But Sully a prideful man didn't want to accept money he felt he didn't earn decided to go on a cattle drive for the money.

While he was away Preston was on the verge of foreclosing on the homestead so Michaela accepted the money and paid off the mortgage. When Sully returned home he was beyond angry about the money fighting with both Michaela and Daniel verbally. Sully eventually saw he was wrong and made up with both Daniel and Michaela.
