Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Authoress Dorothy anxiously prepares to show the completed manuscript of her book about the Cheyenne to Cloud Dancing, whose approval will determine whether or not she publishes it. After she reads it aloud to him, does he approve?

Answer: Yes

Dorothy arrived in the clearing in the woods first to await Cloud Dancing, who was late because he had difficulty in getting a day pass: an indication of the ongoing trouble at the reservation. Dorothy shows him her manuscript, and, after she reminds him of her promise to burn it if he disapproves, he asks to hear it in her own voice.

She begins by recounting an early history of the Cheyenne, who originally lived near the Great Lakes and called themselves "The People." Describing the current plight of the Cheyenne, she ends poignantly with the questions Cloud Dancing asks himself, "Now who will be taught? Now who will know?" Cloud Dancing conveys his sincere gratitude for her work with the words, "It is beautiful."
2. When Cloud Dancing returns to the Palmer Creek Reservation, he receives a vicious beating at the hands of a soldier for punishment. Why?

Answer: He was late

The cruel corporal informs Cloud Dancing that he violated his day pass by returning to the reservation late; he subsequently beats the medicine man savagely. Sergeant McKay, commanding officer of the new garrison, stops the corporal and relieves him of duty after reminding him that confinement is the appropriate punishment for Cloud Dancing's infraction, but the damage is already done. Dr. Mike is sent for and has to perform emergency surgery on Cloud Dancing, who faces life-threatening injuries. Sully, banned from the reservation, cannot even go to his friend.
3. When Horace receives a telegram from a teacher offering her services to Colorado Springs, which member of the town council most ardently supports giving the job permanently to Mrs. Theresa Morales?

Answer: Jake

Jake is reluctant to interview a new teacher and advocates the fact that they've already found a teacher in Mrs. Morales, although she was only hired temporarily. He relents to the other council members and agrees to interview the applicant, but ultimately takes it upon himself as mayor to make Mrs. Morales' position permanent. Hank correctly suspects that, regardless of her nationality, Jake has developed feelings for the widow. Jake later comes to her aid when Indians burn her homestead, destroying everything she had, and sees that she receives proper medical care.

The two almost share a kiss, but she reminds him that she is still in mourning.
4. Sully, outraged by the Indians' worsening situation and his own inability to help, sneaks out one night to see Cloud Dancing at the reservation. What does he notice that spurs him to take action and help the two Arapaho who are planning an escape?

Answer: Everyone is forced to wear white man's clothing

Walks in the Night is initially suspicious of Sully, but the Arapaho Elder gains hope when he recognizes him as the Indian agent, even though Sully tells him he is that no longer. Sully is dismayed to see Cloud Dancing, already forced to dwell in a shack, now dressed in white man's clothing; Walks in the Night tells him the soldiers force all of them to do so.

The Indians are thinking of escaping the reservation, and ask for Sully's help in acquiring supplies. "To live free one day holds more honor than to live a lifetime here," says the Elder. Sully agrees to help.
5. Having acquired the necessary horses and supplies, Sully and the Indians prepare to make the escape, starting with an explosion for a distraction. Chaos ensues as shacks are set on fire and shots are fired from both sides. Who sees Sully's involvement, and swears to make him pay?

Answer: Sergeant McKay

Disagreeing with Michaela that merely surviving is enough, Sully vows to free his friend from the repression at the reservation, wanting his daughter to know the real Cloud Dancing - not the one forced to live as a white man. He quits Preston's housebuilding job and buys horses from Robert E., who insists that Sully tell him of his plans. Even knowing that it constitutes treason, Robert E. recognizes that the Indians need someone willing to fight on their behalf and supports Sully.

The revolt comes with more casualties on both sides than Sully wanted, but he and the Indians manage to escape to the hills.

Unfortunately, McKay catches a glimpse of Sully in the thick of things and tells Michaela, "When I find him, he's gonna pay for it."
6. The situation rapidly escalates into war when the Indians decide to fight for their freedom in Colorado, instead of heading for safer ground as Sully planned. What diverts Matthew's attention from the jail, allowing the Indians to free their captured fellows?

Answer: His homestead is burned down

McKay requests Matthew's help in holding the captured Indians while his soldiers are searching for those who escaped; Matthew reluctantly complies, but is placed in a difficult situation when McKay informs him that Sully was responsible for the incident. Things go from bad to worse when Sgt. O'Connor returns and takes command. Matthew receives news that his homestead is on fire and, immediately leaving, is devastated to see that his home is completely gone, burned down by Indians.

He soon realizes why: so that the jail would be left unattended.

The Indians' escape, concluded by dynamiting the Sheriff's Office, is successful.
7. Denying any knowledge of Sully's involvement when questioned by the Army, Michaela searches for her husband. Cloud Dancing's wounds have made travel difficult, and Sully seeks Mike's help. How does she know where to find him?

Answer: She hears his bird call

Michaela again has to lie when O'Connor comes to the homestead, frightening the children and creating a mess; he leaves with a parting threat. Soon after, Matthew rides up; Colleen and Brian uncomfortably attempt to dodge his questions when he asks for Dr. Mike. Meanwhile, Michaela hears a familiar call: Sully.

He plans to help Cloud Dancing reach safety with the Northern Cheyenne, in Montana's Tongue River Valley, but the medicine man's wound needs restitched. With a promise to return, Sully tells Michaela to go about life as normal; she and Cloud Dancing share a difficult goodbye. Just before they leave, Matthew finds them and tries to fulfill his duties as sheriff by arresting them, but for the sake of his family and Cloud Dancing, lets them go.
8. Sgt. O'Connor turns his attention to Dorothy, who, he has learned, spent much time at the reservation when writing her book. While he is wrecking the Gazette looking for anything incriminating, she is startled to realize that her book contains sensitive information. What does she do with it?

Answer: Burns it

Dorothy protests her innocence and ignorance of Cloud Dancing's whereabouts, but the medicine bag she was given by Cloud Dancing is incriminating evidence to O'Connor. He is called away, but his soldiers remain to continue their destructive search. Dorothy, panicking, tells Michaela that her book reveals Cloud Dancing's desire to go to the Tongue River Valley, if ever he could live free again; with a distraction from Mike, she is able to grab the satchel containing her manuscript. With soldiers seemingly on all sides, Dorothy goes to the forge at the livery and places the work she poured her heart and soul into in the fire, watching it turn to ash.
9. Walks in the Night and the Arapaho Elder are captured by the soldiers, but refuse to answer questions about Sully's whereabouts until O'Connor holds them at gunpoint. O'Connor immediately goes after Sully, but first does what to the two Indians?

Answer: Kills them

Sgt. McKay receives word that O'Connor has gone after Sully and left him in command, but no one knows where he went. McKay asks to see the two Indians, but turns grim when he sees that they have been fatally shot in spite of their revelations. He goes to Dr. Mike and places before her a grave dilemma: if O'Connor finds Sully, he will be hanged; but if Mike helps McKay reach him first, the sergeant will do everything within his power to give Sully life imprisonment. Convinced to believe McKay's claim of being a different sort of man than O'Connor, she places her trust in him to keep Sully alive. Michaela and Dorothy decide to begin their own search for Sully and Cloud Dancing as well.
10. Catching sight of O'Connor and his soldiers in pursuit, Sully intends to draw their attention while allowing Cloud Dancing to go safely on his way. His trick works, but O'Connor and Sully now face a long-awaited confrontation in a treacherous area of the canyon. What's the last we see of Sully in this episode?

Answer: Falling off a cliff

After an emotional, possibly final parting with his friend and brother, Sully tricks O'Connor into believing that he and Cloud Dancing split up temporarily and rejoined later; the soldiers are led in a circle instead, and Cloud Dancing gets away safely. Sully, however, is trapped near a dangerous precipice when cornered by O'Connor.

The two engage in a brutal fistfight that ends when O'Connor makes a suicide run at Sully, throwing both men off the cliff. McKay, along with Mike and Dorothy (whom he was none too pleased to learn followed), find only Wolf at the top of the precipice and O'Connor's body in the river below.

The only evidence of Sully is his medicine bag, and blood on the rocks. Michaela clings desperately to the hope that her husband is still alive.
