Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which member of staff put their own life at risk in order to save a man trapped under a pile of rubble?

Answer: Elizabeth Corday

During this episode, Elizabeth Corday went on a one day "ride-along" with paramedics, who were immediately called to an accident at a chemical warehouse. Despite not having "any experience with confined-space rescue", Elizabeth risked her life in order to save a man trapped under a pile of rubble.

Not only did she have to crawl through a narrow tunnel on her stomach in order to reach the man, but dust and debris kept falling, threatening to trap her too. Moreover she refused to leave the man, despite being ordered to return to safety, informing a fellow rescuer that the Captain would have no choice but to send someone back if she stayed with the man. Elizabeth did finally manage to free the man, narrowly escaping being buried alive in the process.
2. What substance caused Kerry Weaver to collapse as she assisted a patient involved in a chemical explosion?

Answer: Benzene

A patient was brought in having been soaked in an unknown chemical, which was later revealed to be benzene. While assisting the man, the toxic substance was transferred to Kerry, who then collapsed on the floor. Luckily, a patient of Carter's recognised the smell, and advised him to "find out where" the smell was "coming from as quick as possible". Realising the seriousness of the situation, Carter ordered the staff to "keep it contained", which eventually led to the entire ER being evacuated as the fumes were "contaminating patients".
3. Following the contamination of the ER, confusion and chaos ensued. Who took charge, and regained control of the situation?

Answer: John Carter

With Mark Greene out of town, and Kerry Weaver hospitalised, there was complete chaos in the ER until John Carter brought it under control. Commanding everyone to shut up, Carter stated that they were "going to evacuate the entire ER". Ordering anyone with a spot of benzene on their skin, gurney or clothes to get to the ambulance bay, Carter proceeded to take charge of the situation, organising both staff and patients.
4. Where in the hospital did Carol and Doug get trapped with a young patient?

Answer: In the lift/elevator

Following the evacuation, Carol and Doug got trapped in an elevator/lift with a young girl they were trying to move to Intensive Care. With minimal supplies, and only twenty minutes of oxygen left in the girl's tank, Doug was forced to try to open the doors himself. His hard work paid off, and with the help of fire-fighters, the doors soon opened to allow a new oxygen tank in, just as his patient's previous supply ran out.
5. "It's important that the emphasis be placed on the institutional response to the crisis as opposed to any individual efforts." Which self-centred member of staff made this remark?

Answer: Kerry Weaver

Kerry Weaver said these words to Carter at the end of this episode. Having recovered from her brush with benzene, she took back control of the ER at the very moment the crisis ended. Although Kerry did thank Carter for helping her out, her response was rather lukewarm and unconvincing. Nevertheless, it was clear from the body language of the rest of the staff, that they were grateful to Carter for taking control of the situation.
6. Carter crossed the contamination barrier that had been set up outside the hospital.

Answer: True

Once the fire-fighters arrived, a barrier was set up outside the hospital, in order to cleanse those who had been contaminated by the chemical spill. Carter then crossed this line in order to intubate a man with respiratory problems, thus securing his own place in the decontamination shower.
7. What type of footwear was Carter seen wearing near the end of this episode?

Answer: Fire-fighter boots

After being decontaminated, Carter asked one of the fire-fighters to get him some shoes, as his own were wet. Upon receiving a pair of fire-fighter boots, he then responded with "No, man. Real shoes". However Carter was forced to don the boots immediately, once Malik revealed that they were "coding some old lady in the cafeteria".
8. Who told Kerry that as they were now "back on days", she could count on "a higher level of efficiency at the central work area", so that if she passed out again, they would have "everything under control"?

Answer: Jerry

Jerry said this to Kerry at the end of this episode. Claiming that he had "looked at some of the causative factors ", Jerry told Kerry that he could "now identify those at blame". As he had been on nights, it seemed that "the day unit service coordinators" had "left the central area deteriorate". A puzzled Kerry retorted by reminding him that the crisis was due to a chemical spill, prompting Jerry to reveal that the hospital was impaired because its staff had been unable to find one important manual.
9. The fire captain told Carter that he had been a nightmare to work with.

Answer: False

The fire captain told Carter that the hospital had been caught unaware, and as a result, its reaction to the spill had been a total disaster. However he did tell Carter that he personally, "did okay under the circumstances"", and was "the guy to work with on a schedule of disaster drills". When Carter revealed that he was just an intern, the fire captain was surprised, and retorted with "you had me fooled".
10. At the end of this episode, which member of staff was seen arriving for his shift, completely unaware of the day's events?

Answer: Mark Greene

Having "come straight from the airport" as he was due to start "in five minutes", Mark was completely oblivious to the day's events. However as he and Carter walked towards the entrance of the ER, Mark could be heard asking Carter "what's with the boots", prompting Carter to reply that it was "kind of a long story".
