At the beginning of this episode, Elizabeth received a pair of earrings belonging to her grandmother. As Elizabeth put them on, her mother explained that the earrings were worn at both her own wedding and that of her mother. She also added that though Elizabeth was "not one for tradition", she should think of them as her "something old, something new" and "something borrowed".

Elizabeth said this to her parents, after her father turned up unexpectedly. Begging her parents to "be at least civil to each other until the reception", she insisted that they both be on their best behaviour. After Mark popped into the hospital to retrieve his wallet, a series of unfortunate events hindered his attempts to make it to his wedding on time. First, his car was towed from outside the ER, and when he went to catch the El, he found that a tree had fallen across the train tracks. Even when he got on a bus, he was told that the engine had seized and he would not be going anywhere in a hurry. Finally, after Mark asked Peter Benton if he could give him a lift to the church, the pair got stuck in a traffic jam.

After assisting paramedics with an injured driver, Mark finally managed to get to his wedding by riding in an ambulance. Although Mark was initially sure that he would be able to get there on time using Peter's car, the fact that the ambulance had "lights and siren" eventually changed his mind.

Near the beginning of the episode, Mark received a phone call from his daughter, who said that she had missed her flight. She did, however, plan to switch airlines in order to reach Chicago in time for the wedding. Initially, Cleo told Peter that Malucci was willing to cover the last four hours of her shift. However as Peter pressed her to call Malucci to make sure that he was going to cover her, Cleo revealed that she actually had no desire to attend the wedding. Informing Peter that he should not have assumed that she would go with him, Cleo explained that she was not going because Peter and Elizabeth had once been in a relationship. Near the end of this episode Jing-Mei Chen phoned Linda, her baby's adoptive mother. Clearly moved at the pictures sent to her of her son, Chen was nearly moved to tears when she heard her son laughing in the background.

After her plane was delayed due to bad weather, Kerry Weaver had drinks with a man who seemed very interested in getting to know her. However, despite enjoying his company, she told him that she didn't think getting together for dinner "would work out". The man gave her his number anyway, in case she ever changed her mind, or found herself stranded, but she threw it away as soon as he left.
