Perhaps the most respected resident of Fortitude, Sheriff Dan Anderssen can handle any situation, from missing hikers and angry mobs to crazed attacks and firestorms. He has only one weakness, a certain young woman. Anderssen is played by Richard Dormer, an actor from Northern Ireland who is widely known for his portrayal of Beric Dondarrion on HBO's "Game of Thrones."

Governor Hildur Odegard is perhaps the moral center for Fortitude. She moved to the island when she married Eric, a police sergeant, and fell in love not just with him but the arctic beauty of Fortitude. While she's not perfect, no one can deny she has Fortitude's best interest at heart. Hildur is played by Sofie Gråbøl, a Danish actress who rose to fame as Detective Sarah Lund in "Forbrydelsen," which was later remade in English as "The Killing" with Mirielle Enos.

Dr. Natalie Yellburton is a British scientist who works for the research center in Fortitude. She's brilliant, fearless, and, at least for a while, missing and cause for alarm with the Fortitude authorities. Dr. Yellburton is played by Sienna Guillory, an English actress also known for playing Idris Elba's love interest in the third season of "Luther."

Answer: Detective Chief Inspector

Detective Chief Inspector Eugene Morton is an outsider, an American working for the London Metro Police, sent to Fortitude to solve a murder or two. Clearly out of his element in the wild, frozen Arctic, Morton nonetheless dutifully investigates his cases and makes insightful connections a lesser investigator would miss.

He's played impeccably by Stanley Tucci, a versatile American actor who has received many awards and much critical acclaim. Tucci was born in Peekskill, New York.

Henry Tyson is one of the oldest residents of Fortitude; he went to the icy island as a young Englishman to photograph the frozen wilds and the apex predators found there, polar bears. His work was successful and he chose to stay in Fortitude from then on. Troubled by internal demons, Henry drinks too much, and while he generally means well, some of his actions are fateful.

Henry is played by venerable actor Sir Michael John Gambon, CBE.

Dr. Margaret Allerdyce is Fortitude's physician; she has her own surgery and treats everyone on the island. She is a bit off-putting, with an odd affect, but she treats her patients professionally. She loves her adult daughter, though she has difficulty demonstrating that. Dr. Allerdyce is played by London-born Phoebe Nicholls. Nicholls is part of an acting dynasty; her father was an actor as are her two children.

Elena Ledesma comes to Fortitude with a secret past, known only to the Sheriff. She takes a job at the Midnight Sun, the local inn and restaurant, where she works the bar, serves meals, and cleans rooms. Her bewitching presence causes some problems on this usually sedate icy island. Elena is played by Verónica Echegui, a Spanish actress who has been nominated for several Goya awards.

Answer: Search and rescue specialist

Frank Sutter left the military under interesting circumstances and moved to Fortitude to take a job as a search-and-rescue specialist in the police department, bringing his wife Jules and young son Liam with him. Competent in snow, Sutter has problems in his personal life. Nicholas Pinnock, who plays Frank Sutter, was born in London to Jamaican parents.

He is multi-talented: he acts, sings, dances, and writes poetry.

Charlie Stoddard is a scientist who is the head of the Arctic Research Centre that's based in Fortitude. He's married to Trish, and while he may not be a model Boy Scout, he is beloved by his wife, friends, and staff. Charlie is played by Christopher Eccleston, a British actor from Lancashire. Eccleston played the Ninth Doctor in the "Doctor Who" series; he was also in HBO's "The Leftovers" and the film "28 Days Later" (2002).

As her boyfriend reports, Shirley Allerdyce, the cashier a the local store, is the one person in Fortitude everyone loves. She keeps people informed of news, watches over children, and offers sympathy to the troubled. Shirley is played by Jessica Gunning, a British actress from West Yorkshire. She also played WPC Kath Morgan in "Prime Suspect 1973" on ITV in 2017.
