"Friends" and Me (It's a Tenuous Link) Quiz

It just occurred to me how similar I am to those six glamorous, stylish, witty "Friends". Except that I'm older. And have rubbish hair. And I should eat less. And it couldn't hurt to work out. But aside from that, it's pretty much a tie...

Question 4 of 10
4. I'm a bit rubbish at all things 'DIY' (in an attempt to see if it was still working, I was once persuaded to lick a battery, and reeled from the shock as it stuck to my tongue). In "The One With the Secret Closet", Joey and Chandler appear to be even more inept at DIY, as they try to unlock a closet door so that they can see what Monica seems to be hiding in it. What was unusual about this scene? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. In the search for a twenty-two inch waist, I bought an exercise DVD. I burn dozens of calories just by dusting the shelf it sits on throughout the year. In "The One Where Ross Finds Out", Monica decides to get Chandler fit. To encourage him, she sings a little tune: "We're workin', we're movin', we're in the zone we're groovin'!"

In the episode "The One With the Tiny T-Shirt", another character comes into Monica's apartment, dances around the kitchen table, and leaves again. While doing this, he/she is singing the same tune, but with different words: "Oh mommy, oh daddy, I am a big old baddie! Oh mommy, oh daddy, I am a big old baddie!" Which character does this?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. I'd like to think of myself as multi-linguistic, rather like Phoebe Buffay. But after trying to order 'eggs on toast' at a restaurant in Spain once, and not realizing that the Spanish word for 'eggs' is almost the same as 'Thursdays'... well, you can see where I'm going with it. Who does Phoebe attempt to teach French to, with disastrous results? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Once a month, I brave the beauty salon to have my eyebrows waxed. I tend to have a bit more brow off than strictly necessary, so I don't have to endure the experience quite as often; consequently, I come out looking rather startled. When Joey could only stand one of his eyebrows being waxed, who was it who plucked his other eyebrow when he got home? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Getting a spray tan is tricky. I invariably end up looking like I've been 'Tangoed'. In "The One With Ross' Tan", what was it that prompted Ross to get a spray tan in the first place? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. To my shame, I did once retrieve some chocolate cake from the bin, during a late-night craving for something sweet. My cupboard was bare, so my only option was to search for the remains of the cake, and scrape the bin juice off. I am not alone in my questionable habits. Which two characters in "Friends" loved their cheesecake so much, they ate it off the floor after it had fallen off the plate? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Nothing alarms me more than when I'm at dinner with a nice, large bowl of fries in front of me, and I see someone's hand looming towards them, in the false assumption that I'm willing to share. Fortunately, I am in good company. In "The One With Ross' Sandwich" Ross gets very angry when someone steals his sandwich at work. What does Ross call the extra layer of gravy-soaked bread that is in the middle of this sandwich? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In my shallow attempts to find tenuous links with the fabulous 'Friends', I realized that, unlike the three girls, I have never been pregnant or had a child. Although once, however, a someone did ask me "When are you due?" which was more than humiliating. So I suppose that was one dubious link to the women? In the episode "The One With the Birth", actress June Gable plays the midwife who helps Carol give birth. What other character in later episodes did she play?

Answer: Estelle Leonard (Joey's agent)

June Gable first appeared as 'Estelle Leonard' in the episode "The One With the Butt", but her scene can only be seen in the DVD version, as the episode was running too long for it to be included in the final cut. She is in several episodes throughout the series.

On the DVD extras, June Gable is interviewed and tells us of how she won the role of Estelle. She says at her first audition, she was told to come back again, and to do something "different" with the role. She returned, wearing a fat suit, and eating a large sandwich unbecomingly; then proceeded to smoke, ending the scene by stubbing the cigarette out in the sandwich!

My favorite Estelle quote:
"I'm not saying you're not talented, you're very talented. It's just with the bird dead and all, there's very little act left."
2. I admit, I have never dated Brad Pitt. I did, however, once date someone who knew someone who was called Brad. In "The One With the Rumor", Brad Pitt plays Will, who co-founded a club in high school called the 'I Hate Rachel Green Club'. How many members of the club were there?

Answer: Three

There were three members of the "I Hate Rachel Green Club' - Will, Ross and "That exchange student from Thailand, but I don't think he knew what it was," explained Ross helpfully.

Brad Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston at the time he filmed this episode, and the writers decided it would be fun to make his character an enemy of Rachel's on the show. He received an Emmy nomination for his role.

The "rumor" in the title of the episode, was that Will and Ross told people that Rachel was an hermaphrodite when they were in high school. This storyline prompted a member of the 'Intersex Society of North America' to write a letter to NBC, expressing the society's disgust at the "Ignorant, insulting, degrading, and absolutely unprofessional" way in which the storyline was handled. They wanted NBC to make a public apology on air, before the next episode of "Friends" aired.

My favorite quote from this episode:
Phoebe: "What? What else did you do?"
Will: "We started a rumor."
Rachel: "What rumor?"
Phoebe: "Oh, come on Will! Just take off your shirt and tell us!"
3. Unlike Joey, I have not met any royalty. But I do have the same hat that he wore when he met Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, whilst the friends were in London for Ross's wedding. What image was on the hat?

Answer: The Union Jack flag

The friends all went to London for Ross and Emily's wedding (except Phoebe, who had to stay at home as she was heavily pregnant). Whilst there, Joey bought himself a large hat with the Union Jack on it, much to the chagrin of Chandler. Later on in the episode, we saw that Joey had bumped into the Duchess of York (as you do), and taken a video of her saying how much she liked his hat.

The producers of "Friends" originally intended Ross and Emily's marriage to last longer than it did. But apparently actress Helen Baxendale (Emily) was pregnant at the time, and did not wish to be in America whilst she was pregnant. So she had to be written out.

Also, the hall in which Ross and Emily got married, was apparently the inspiration for David and Victoria Beckham's wedding!

My favorite quote from this episode:
Mr Waltham:" I could kill you with my thumb, you know".

Answer: It is one of the rare times we get to see the fourth wall of Monica's apartment

As "Friends" is filmed in front of a live audience, we hardly ever get to see the fourth wall of Monica's apartment. In effect, the audience is the 'fourth wall'. In order to film this scene though, a fourth wall had to be built, otherwise we would have seen the audience sitting there, which would have ruined the atmosphere somewhat... Consequently, it meant that this scene would have had to be filmed before the live tape night, so that the fourth wall could be removed in time for the filming of the rest of the episode in front of the audience.

This is the episode where Phoebe finds out that someone else has been giving Monica a massage, and Phoebe feels betrayed by it. Monica explains that she is uncomfortable about her friend massaging her, but in an earlier episode, Phoebe mentions that Monica and Ross had been her only clients for a while!

My favorite quote from this episode:
Joey: "Oh, do you have a bobby pin?"
Chandler: "Yeah. (Runs his hands through his hair.) Oh no wait, I'm not a nine-year-old girl."
Joey: "Then why do you throw like one?"
5. In the search for a twenty-two inch waist, I bought an exercise DVD. I burn dozens of calories just by dusting the shelf it sits on throughout the year. In "The One Where Ross Finds Out", Monica decides to get Chandler fit. To encourage him, she sings a little tune: "We're workin', we're movin', we're in the zone we're groovin'!" In the episode "The One With the Tiny T-Shirt", another character comes into Monica's apartment, dances around the kitchen table, and leaves again. While doing this, he/she is singing the same tune, but with different words: "Oh mommy, oh daddy, I am a big old baddie! Oh mommy, oh daddy, I am a big old baddie!" Which character does this?

Answer: Joey

In "The One With the Tiny T-Shirt", Joey learns he has got the role he wanted in a play, where he meets a girl called Kate Miller, and falls for her, despite the fact she doesn't return the affection. The scene where he walks into the apartment, dances round the table and leaves, is very funny, prompting these next lines:

Ross: "I guess he musta gotten the part in that play."
Chandler: "Yeah, either that, or Gloria Estefan was right; eventually the rhythm IS going to get you."

Joey has a somewhat 'interesting' dance history - in "The One With the Ballroom Dancing" Joey agrees to be Treeger's dancing partner, so that Treeger can rehearse with someone before he goes to a ball. In "The One With all the Jealousy", Joey has lied about his extensive dancing experience (or rather, the lack of it), and ends up having to teach a class full of audition hopefuls a complicated dance. He doesn't do it well...

Answer: Joey

In "The One Where Joey Speaks French" Joey has an audition for a play in which he needs to speak French, and asks Phoebe to help him. I want to be able to write the kind of things Joey tries to say, but to be honest, the words to not exist! For example, Phoebe says "Je m'appelle Claude", and Joey tries to copy her with something like "Blah ble blr, phu", but my spell-checker isn't having any of those words!

My favorite quote from this episode:
Erica tells Monica and Chandler that one of the possible fathers of her baby could be a guy called Joe who killed his own father with a shovel. Monica later tells Chandler that Joe isn't the father because what Erica and Joe did together, couldn't possibly make a baby:
Chandler: "Oh God! What was it? The thing that we hardly ever do, or the thing we never do?"
Monica: "The thing we never do."
Chandler: (nods, impressed) "Shovely Joe!"

Answer: Chandler

Chandler reassured Joey that he wouldn't hurt him, by saying "Oh, not with my combination of ice cubes, Aloe Vera, and my gentle self-loathing touch".

By the way, I had my monthly eyebrow wax last week, and as the beauty therapist was waxing them, she also appeared to be staring intently at my lip. "Do you want me to wax your mustache?" she offered kindly.

My favorite quote from this episode:
Chandler: "Ok, you know how most kids get their allowance from mowing the lawn, or taking out the garbage? Well I earned mine by plucking the eyebrows of my father and his "business" partners."
Joey: "Oh my God!"
Chandler: "Yeah, well, I guess you don't need my help, Victor Victoria!"
8. Getting a spray tan is tricky. I invariably end up looking like I've been 'Tangoed'. In "The One With Ross' Tan", what was it that prompted Ross to get a spray tan in the first place?

Answer: He caught sight of Monica's legs and was impressed with the color

Ross' tan turns out to be quite disastrous! He wants a 'level two' tan, and is meant to count to five once his front has been sprayed, before turning around and having his back sprayed. Ross decides that it's only responsible to count "One Mississippi, two Mississippi" and so on, meaning that he was far too slow. Consequently, his front gets sprayed again. By the time he has tried to rectify his mistakes, at the end of the episode his front is a 'level twelve' tan, whilst his back hasn't been touched at all!

In this episode, actress Jennifer Coolidge plays Amanda Buffamonteezi, Phoebe's friend who pretends to be British. Coolidge went on to play Joey's agent in Matt le Blanc's new series "Joey".

My favorite quote from this episode:
Ross saw Monica cross her legs when they were in 'Central Perk', and commented on how natural her tan was, prompting Chandler to say: "Stop staring at my wife's legs. No, no, stop staring at your SISTER'S legs!"

Answer: Rachel and Chandler

Chandler found a cheesecake outside his front door that was meant for a neighbor. However, because it was the most gorgeous cheesecake he'd ever tasted, he didn't give it back. He soon roped Rachel into his plans, and shortly an argument ensues over who has eaten more. During this, the cheesecake falls on the floor, but undeterred, they settle down to eat it from the floor. Joey soon joins them, and without batting an eyelid, takes out a fork from his jacket, and tucks right in!

Piece of trivia - the restaurant in which Joey and Phoebe have dinner in this episode, is called "Iridium", which was also the restaurant Monica worked at in season one.

My favorite quote from this episode:
Chandler: "I didn't read the box before I opened it. And you can't return a box after you've opened the box."
Rachel: "Why, why not?"
Chandler: "Because it's too delicious."

Answer: The 'Moist Maker'

Ross seems to be going through a crisis: he's thirty years old; about to go through his second divorce; and he just got evicted. He said that this sandwich was "the only good thing going on in my life". And now it's been stolen...

In this episode, Monica and Chandler are still dating secretly, known only to Joey. When Rachel found a woman's razor in Joey's bathroom, he pretended it was because he was playing a woman in a play, and consequently ended up shaving his legs. Actor Matt le Blanc actually shaved his legs to do this episode.

My favorite quote from this episode:
Joey is holding a bucket of deep-fried chicken:
Joey: "All right, now, I'm going to get back to my bucket. I'm only eating the skin, so the chicken's up for grabs."
