Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Eddard Stark, affectionately known as Ned by his loved ones, was Lord of Winterfell and the moral center of the world of Westeros. He was played to great acclaim -- just not long enough for most fans -- by Sean Bean, who went on to star in his own show about a deep undercover operative. What was the name of that show?

Answer: Legends

"Legends" followed the story of an undercover operative who was uncannily good at disappearing into his assignments. But when his own identity became uncertain, all bets were off. Bean was born in Yorkshire, England and is a lifelong fan of Sheffield United.

2. Emilia Clarke took the "Game of Thrones" world by storm with her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons. Before she was a Khaleesi, she was on what popular British soap opera set in the medical world?

Answer: Doctors

Emilia Clarke did not have a particularly full resume before joining the "Game of Thrones" cast. One of her roles was a turn in "Doctors", which began on BBC One in 2000. Clarke was born in London and began acting as early as three. She was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2013, 2015, and 2016.

3. Before he was the dashing Jaime Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau played Commander Frank Pike in what short-lived Fox science fiction series?

Answer: Virtuality

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's transition from his native Danish roles to American film began with his portrayal of American Medal of Honor recipient Gary Gordon in "Black Hawk Down." After that, he had minor roles in many shows. When he finally had a starring role in "Virtuality", he probably felt he had paid his dues and earned top billing. But, alas, even with big name producer Ronald T. Moore, Fox cancelled "Virtuality" promptly.

But before long, he was cast as the dashing Jaime Lannister in "Game of Thrones". In 2013, he won a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

4. After she was Catelyn Stark, actress Michelle Fairley, true to form, continued to work steadily. One of her roles was as Aideen Trotwood, who played again a certain murderess in what series on Lifetime?

Answer: The Lizzie Borden Chronicles

Michelle Fairley played a woman who gave Lizzie Borden a run for her money in "The Lizzie Borden Chronicles", which ran on Lifetime in 2015. Although the real Lizzie was acquitted of murder, she was forever tainted by the accusation of killing her father and stepmother.

Fairley was born in Northern Ireland. After "Game of Thrones", she went on to take a regular role in the series "Suits" on USA and on the second season of "Fortitude" on Sky Atlantic.

This image is of an axe, which Lizzie apparently used to give her mother 40 whacks.
5. Before he was the conniving Petyr Baelish, Aidan Gillen played a city politician on what acclaimed series created by David Simon?

Answer: The Wire

Aidan Gillen was one of the casting exceptions on "Game of Thrones"; unlike most of the other actors, he had been seen in many other small and large screen projects. But his ability to disappear into roles played to his advantage and he was cast as the ever-opportunistic Baelish. In "The Wire", Gillen played Tommy Carcetti, a city councilman with ambition.

Aiden was born in Dublin and was in many plays, television shows, and films before and after "Game of Thrones".

The houses in this image are typical of old-town Baltimore, where "The Wire" was set.
6. Before she was the diabolical Cersei Lannister in "Game of Thrones", Lena Headey played the formidable mother Sarah Connor in what television series spun off from a major film franchise?

Answer: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

She was cast as Sarah Connor in the American television series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" which ran for two seasons. Lena has earned many awards and nominations for her portrayal of Cersei.

7. Jonathan Pryce was already famous long before "GoT". In "Wolf Hall", he played an important advisor to Henry VIII named _____. What name goes in the blank?

Answer: Cardinal Wolsey

Jonathan Pryce played Cardinal Wolsey in "Wolf Hall" from BBC Two in 2015. Pryce grew up in Wales and was awarded a scholarship from the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

In "Game of Thrones", Pryce plays the High Sparrow, a powerful religious leader who tangles with Cersei.

8. Before playing the woman-who-would-be-queen, Natalie Dormer played another royal, Anne Boleyn, in what Showtime series?

Answer: The Tudors

Natalie Dormer played a bewitching second wife to Henry VIII in Showtimes "The Tudors". True to history, her role came to a rather abrupt end. In "Game of Thrones", she played Margaery Tyrell, whose powerful grandmother, Lady Olenna, made sure she was betrothed to a future king. When that marriage fell through, she was betrothed to his brother. Natalie was born in Reading and trained in dancing before moving to acting.

9. Before he played the beloved Tyrion Lannister, Peter Dinklage played a nanny in an FX show about two cosmetic surgeons who behaved very badly. What was the name of the show?

Answer: Nip/Tuck

When one of the doctor's wives, Julia, was expecting a child, the family interviewed nannies, and Peter Dinklage's Marlowe Sawyer was hired. With his gentleness and intelligence, he had an effect on everyone in the house, especially Julia.

Dinklage has earned countless nominations and awards for his performances, especially in "Game of Thrones" and in the 2003 film "The Station Agent" in which he played a quiet train enthusiast.

10. Gwendoline Christie made quite an impression as Brienne of Tarth, a courtly knight committed to protecting the daughters of Catelyn Stark. Then she joined Elisabeth Moss in what Sundance series?

Answer: Top of the Lake: China Girl

After she was already famous for "Game of Thrones", Christie played Miranda Hilmarson, a part written for her by producer/writer Jane Campion, in the second season of "Top of the Lake". Miranda was an earnest police officer with a sensual side. Christie grew up in West Sussex and studied gymnastics as a girl.
