Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This award winning actress appeared on the next to last episode of the original series in an episode called "The Case of the Crafty Kidnapper". Her later work included a role on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" as Phyllis. Can you name her?

Answer: Cloris Leachman

Cloris Leachman's career was busy and full of very worthy roles. My own favorites were Frau Blucher in "Young Frankenstein" and as Madam DeFarge in "History of the World, Part I". She had an amazing talent for comedy.
2. In 1961's episode "The Case of the Brazen Bequest", this actor had the role of Pete Gibson. He appeared in other episodes of "Perry Mason", but perhaps his most memorable role was in the movie "Cool Hand Luke" in which he uttered the deathless phrase, "What we have here is failure to communicate". Who was this very busy actor?

Answer: Strother Martin

Martin was an excellent swimmer and diver who tried out for the Olympic swim team in 1948, but placed third in the diving and barely missed making the squad. He was also a swimming and diving instructor in the Navy, but it was as a character actor on television that he is best remembered, appearing in literally hundreds of roles on numerous shows.
3. This talented actor was featured in "The Case of the Envious Editor", in which the publisher of a scandal sheet is murdered, with plenty of suspects to go round. He was also the star of the movie "In Like Flint". Who was he?

Answer: James Coburn

The Nebraska born Coburn (1928 - 2002) also starred in a great movie in which he played "The President's Analyst" (1967) and he had a featured role in "The Great Escape" in 1963.
4. Also a member of the famous 'Rat Pack', what beautiful actress, who appeared in episode 23, "The Case of the One Eyed Witness", later starred in her own series about a policewoman?

Answer: Angie Dickinson

Dickinson was born in North Dakota in 1930. Her first breakout role was in the movie "Sins of Rachel Cade". She was a life long friend of Frank Sinatra and was close to John F. Kennedy.
5. This Broadway trained actress appeared in "The Case of the Crimson Kiss", but her most familiar work would be her ten year stint as "Aunt Bee". Who am I talking about?

Answer: Frances Bavier

Frances Bavier passed away in 1989 at the age of 87. By most accounts difficult to work with and often at odds with the other members of the cast of "The Andy Griffith Show", she seemed to have a love-hate relationship with the role of Aunt Bee.
6. This actor was in the 1964 episode titled "The Case of the Bountiful Beauty". He later made a movie, titled "Paper Moon" in which he and his daughter played a couple of depression era con men. Can you name him?

Answer: Ryan O'Neal

O'Neal appeared in the series "Peyton Place" early in his career, which was a breakout role for him. He went on to a career in feature films, as did his daughter, Tatum. She appeared most appealingly in "Bad News Bears", with Walter Matthau. His career was spotty, appearing in such films as "What's Up, Doc?" with Barbra Streisand.
7. America's oldest teenager played a murderer in the final episode of the original series, "The Case of the Final Fadeout". He also hosted a show called "American Bandstand". Who was he?

Answer: Dick Clark

Clark was the perennial voice of bubble gum music, featuring many early rock and roll artists whose careers were greatly benefited by him. He was also a shrewd businessman. His TV appearances included hosting game shows and a "bloopers" program of out-takes and mistakes from TV shows. His only other guest acting role was on an episode of "Adam 12", a police drama.
8. He made many appearances in early TV westerns such as "The Rifleman" and "Billy the Kid", but it was spaghetti westerns that caused his career to take off. What actor, normally seen as a western "heavy", had a role in the 1963 episode "The Case of the Golden Oranges"?

Answer: Lee Van Cleef

Van Cleef was a busy character actor, mostly in 1950 oaters, a time when television was saturated with them. But an auto accident sidelined him until Sergio Leone convinced him to resume his work, most notably with Clint Eastwood in "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly".
9. This "Carol Burnett Show" regular showed up as a bartender in 1962's "The Case of the Unsuitable Uncle". He also appeared as Count De Monet in Mel Brooks' "History of the World, Part I" and as Hedley Lamarr in "Blazing Saddles".

Answer: Harvey Korman

Korman, who passed away in 2008, was pretty well defined by his work as a second banana with Carol Burnett. He was a great sketch comedian, but found little success after leaving her show. His early break was working with Danny Kaye on his tv show in the early 60's.
10. This famous actor showed up in 1963's "The Case of the Shoplifter's Shoe", but gained far more fame as a Vulcan on another hit show. Who was he?

Answer: Leonard Nimoy

Nimoy brought the Vulcan character Spock to life in the original series "Star Trek". The role was voted one of the 50 most memorable ever by "TV Guide" magazine. It was type casting that Nimoy could never escape, but his resonant voice has been heard in numerous documentaries.
