When Gary Mitchell developed godlike powers, Mitchell did Kelso a good turn and helped him avert an engineering disaster. However, Mitchell soon "outgrew" his friends and when Kelso took part in an attempt to maroon Mitchell on Delta Vega, Mitchell did not hesitate to murder him.

Kirk's "Court Martial" was stopped once the jurors had proof that Finney was alive and had faked his own death.

Dehner's mission on board the Enterprise was to observe the crew's reactions to emergency situations. She ended up developing the same godlike abilities as Mitchell, albeit at a slower rate. However, she still retained her humanity, and this is why she chose to use those abilities to stop Mitchell.

This poor man was onscreen for a very short time, and had the misfortune to meet the Horta. If it's any consolation to him, he was the last to die before a peaceful resolution could be found.
