Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first officer is Lieutenant JG Joe Tormolen. At the end of his life, he became convinced that man was not meant to be in space. How did this depressed young man die?

Answer: He succumbed to an infection due to touching diseased liquid.

In "The Naked Time," Lt. Tormolen contracted a virus that lowered inhibitions by removing the glove of his decontamination suit, allowing some frozen liquid to creep onto his hand. Since he had broken the integrity of his suit, he was able to bring this virus up to the Enterprise. Under the influence of the virus, Tormolen became depressed and attempted to kill himself in the rec room with a butter knife.

Although McCoy was able to surgically repair the damage, Tormolen died anyway.
2. Crewman Green's death was not noticed immediately. Why did it take the Enterprise crew some time to realize he was dead?

Answer: The salt vampire was impersonating him.

Green and another security officer were dispatched to search for the missing Nancy Crater. The salt vampire, who had been impersonating Mrs. Crater, killed both security men and impersonated Green so it could go up to the Enterprise. Kirk and Spock later find Green's body on the planet's surface, but by then the salt vampire has abandoned Green's appearance. Crewman Green can be seen in "The Man Trap."
3. Lt. Robert Tomlinson was overcome by the fumes of a phaser coolant leak in the middle of a Romulan attack. What was especially tragic about this officer's death?

Answer: He was to be married that very day.

"The Balance of Terror" begins with his wedding to Angela Martine, who worked in the same department as him. Unfortunately, the wedding was interrupted, as the Romulans attack before it can be completed. He never does get to marry Ms. Martine.
4. Ensign O'Herlihy and two other tactical officers were assigned to scout out the area. O'Herlihy stands up to obey his orders and is immediately shot and killed. Who or what kills him?

Answer: The Gorn

Ensign O'Herlihy is in the landing party that beams down to Cestus III in "Arena." The other two men that were given the same orders head out in a crouch, hiding behind cover. O'Herlihy, however, decides to stand up and make himself a blazing red target. Makes a person wonder where O'Herlihy received his tactical training.
5. This officer was strangled by a cable. Even worse, the murderer was this man's friend. Who was this poor officer?

Answer: Lt. Lee Kelso

Kelso, a navigator and engineer, was friends with Gary Mitchell in "Where No Man Has Gone Before." When Gary Mitchell developed godlike powers, Mitchell did Kelso a good turn and helped him avert an engineering disaster. However, Mitchell soon "outgrew" his friends and when Kelso took part in an attempt to maroon Mitchell on Delta Vega, Mitchell did not hesitate to murder him.
6. In "The Galileo Seven," the shuttle is forced to make an emergency landing on Taurus II. While the occupants attempt to repair the shuttle, two of the shuttle passengers are killed by the inhabitants of this planet. Who were these two unfortunates?

Answer: Latimer and Gaetano

Lt. Latimer, the shuttle pilot, was the first to die when he took a huge spear through the chest. Lt. Gaetano, a radiation specialist, was next to go. Lt. Boma and Yeoman Mears survived the mission, along with Mr. Spock, Mr. Scott, and Dr. McCoy.
7. In "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", Captain Kirk, Nurse Chapel, Crewman Mathews, and Crewman Rayburn beam down to Exo-III to reunite Nurse Chapel with her fiance. Who kills the two crewmen?

Answer: Ruk

Mathews accompanied Kirk and Chapel into the caves, and was pushed off a cliff. Rayburn stayed behind by the entrance and was suffocated.
8. Lt. Commander Ben Finney was another friend of Captain Kirk's. How did he die?

Answer: He didn't actually die.

Yes, that's right, the rumors of Finney's death were greatly exaggerated. Finney made it appear that Kirk jettisoned his pod before issuing a red alert, meaning that Finney wouldn't have had time to get out of the pod before it was jettisoned. Kirk's "Court Martial" was stopped once the jurors had proof that Finney was alive and had faked his own death.
9. Dr. Elizabeth Dehner died heroically in the line of duty. What was her specialty?

Answer: Psychiatry

Dehner's mission on board the Enterprise was to observe the crew's reactions to emergency situations. She ended up developing the same godlike abilities as Mitchell, albeit at a slower rate. However, she still retained her humanity, and this is why she chose to use those abilities to stop Mitchell.
10. One of the security guards killed this season was never named. Who or what killed him?

Answer: The Horta

This poor man was onscreen for a very short time, and had the misfortune to meet the Horta. If it's any consolation to him, he was the last to die before a peaceful resolution could be found.
