Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Commodore Decker
Answer: William Windom
The sixth episode of season 2 is the fan favorite, "The Doomsday Machine". Commodore Decker was the captain of a doomed starship, the Constellation, that had been disabled by the "machine". All of his crew had been killed, leaving Decker in a tragic and erratic mental state.
2. Edith Keeler
Answer: Joan Collins
The penultimate episode of season one was "The City on the Edge of Forever". It featured Joan Collins as Edith Keeler, a social worker during the Great Depression. The episode's tragic ending and time travel make it a consistent pick as a #1 favorite by fans, critics, and cast.
3. Khan
Answer: Ricardo Montalban
Ricardo Montalbán played Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically engineered, super human in season one's "Space Seed". He reprised the role in the feature film, "The Wrath of Khan" released in 1982.
4. Miri
Answer: Kim Darby
Kim Darby played Miri in the season one episode of the same name. She was the eldest in a gang of children doomed to die as they reached maturity.
Born Deborah Zerby in 1947, she also played the role of Mattie Ross in "True Grit" (1969) with John Wayne.
5. Balok
Answer: Clint Howard
In season one's "The Corbomite Maneuver", Clint Howard, when he was about six years old, played the infant-like commander of a small craft. Balok had been tricked by Kirk's fake "corbomite" doomsday device.
Clint is the brother of the highly successful director/actor Ron Howard ("Apollo 13", "Splash", etc.). Ron often features Clint in his films.
6. Leila Kalomi
Answer: Jill Ireland
Jill Ireland played Leila Kalomi in "This Side of Paradise" from season one. In this episode, Spock, affected by spores from a planet's flowers, falls uncharacteristically in love with Leila.
Jill was married to David McCallum (Illya Kuryakin in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.") from 1957 to 1967, and then to Charles Bronson from 1968 until her death in 1990 from breast cancer.
7. Ambassador Sarek
Answer: Mark Lenard
Mark Lenard, the only actor to play a member of three major non-human races, as the Romulan commander in "Balance of Terror," and the Klingon Commander in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture", but perhaps most notably as Spock's father Sarek in season two's "Journey to Babel" and in several films: "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock", "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", as well as in some "TNG" episodes.
8. Dr. Ann Mulhall
Answer: Diana Muldaur
Diana Muldaur appeared in season two's "Return to Tomorrow" (as Science Officer Dr. Ann Mulhall). She also appeared early in season three as Dr. Miranda Jones in "Is There in Truth No Beauty?"
Muldaur had numerous guest star and recurring roles on television, perhaps most memorably as Dennis Weaver's love interest in the mystery series, "McCloud", and later as the pushy Rosalind Shays in "L.A. Law" (for which she got two Emmy nominations).
9. Harry Mudd
Answer: Roger C Carmel
Who can forget Harry Mudd? First seen early in season one in "Mudd's Women" and again in "I, Mudd" (season two), Harry Mudd was a kind of self-centered, deceitful swashbuckler (think: goofy Han Solo).
10. Amanda Sarek
Answer: Jane Wyatt
Introduced to us in "Journey to Babel" (season two), Amanda Sarek was the human wife of Vulcan Ambassador Sarek. She was played by Jane Wyatt, an actress well known for her role as Margaret Anderson (the mom) in the 1950s American TV show, "Father Knows Best" with Robert Young.
In case you missed it, the Sareks are Mr. Spock's parents.
