Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain Kirk
Answer: William Shatner
The captain of the starship Enterprise, James Tiberius Kirk, was born in Riverside, Iowa in the year 2233. He held the rank of Commander in Starfleet, the space force of the United Federation of Planets.
2. Mr. Spock
Answer: Leonard Nimoy
The Enterprise's first officer and science officer was Commander (sometimes called Lt Commander) Spock. Usually addressed as Mr. Spock, he was half Vulcan, half human, and ultra-logical. Spock was Captain Kirk's most reliable professional confidante and best friend. Once, when pressed, he said his first name was unpronounceable.
3. Dr. McCoy
Answer: DeForest Kelley
Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy was the Enterprise's chief medical officer and often spoke to Captain Kirk with a voice of compassion and morality, and was frequently at odds with the rigorous logic of Spock.
4. Lt. Commander Scott
Answer: James Doohan
Lt. Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott was the Enterprise's second officer and chief engineer, often called upon to perform the impossible.
5. Lt. Sulu
Answer: George Takei
In an early episode, Sulu was in the science department as a physicist, but in later episodes he served as third officer and senior helmsman and had the rank of Lieutenant. The character was given the first name of "Hikaru" in later fiction.
6. Lt. Uhura
Answer: Nichelle Nichols
Lieutenant Nyota Uhura was the communications officer for the Enterprise. The name "Uhura" came from the Swahili word for freedom, "uhuru".
7. Ensign Chekov
Answer: Walter Koenig
Ensign Pavel Chekov was the Enterprise's navigator, appearing in the second and third seasons. He spoke with a decidedly Russian accent and liked to give erroneous and humorous credit to the Russians for inventing (in-wenting) and discovering numerous things.
8. Yeoman Rand
Answer: Grace Lee Whitney
Yeoman Janice Rand appeared during the first season of Star Trek's original series, but was eventually written out of the show (reportedly for budgetary reasons).
9. Nurse Chapel
Answer: Majel Barrett
Nurse Christine Chapel was Dr. McCoy's assistant on the Enterprise and was portrayed by Majel Barrett. In several episodes, Nurse Chapel revealed she had feelings for Mr. Spock.
In "The Cage" (pilot episode) Majel Barrett was cast as "Number One", the first officer of the Enterprise.
Ms. Barrett also voiced the Enterprise's computer.
10. Lt. Leslie
Answer: Eddie Paskey
Eddie Paskey played Lieutenant Leslie, in various roles from security officer to bridge engineering. Leslie was in numerous episodes throughout the three-season run of the original series and was actually killed part way through season two ("Obsession"), but miraculously recovered for subsequent episodes.
