Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My favourite cartoon of all time is the classic "Three Little Bops" - a brilliant musical remake of "the Three Little Pigs." The first nightclub they played at was the House of Straw and the third was the House of Bricks. But what was the second called?

Answer: Dew Drop Inn

Love the line after the wolf blows it down "Dew Drop Inn - Did drop down - three little pigs crawled out of the rubble - This big bad wolf gives us nothing but trouble - so we won't be bothered by his dirty tricks - the next place we play must be made of bricks."
2. The big Bad Wolf wants to join the band and attempts to impress "the Three Little Bops" with his talents with a variety of instruments especially at the House of Bricks. Which of these instruments did he NOT play?

Answer: violin

The wolf's main instrument was the trumpet and the pigs were willing to let him try out until they hear how bad he is and kick him out. He uses the trumpet to blow the House of Straw and the Dew Drop Inn down. At the house of Bricks he tries to disguise himself as a ukelele player and a marching band bass player.

As all fans know, he finally blows himself up and dies. He comes back as a ghost from Hell ('went out of this world without a trace - didn't go to heaven was the OTHER PLACE!') and finally shows he can play ('the big bad wolf has learnt the rule - you got stay hot to play real cool')! He gets to join the band and they become the the 'Three Little Bops Plus One!'
3. A great miniseries was the one featuring "The Honeymousers" - a take off of Jackie Gleason's "Honeymooners." What were the names of the three mice who featured in this series?

Answer: Ralph, Alice, Norton

Warner Bros didn't mess with a classic - they used the same names as the characters from Gleason's show.
4. In "The Honeymousers", Alice and Ralph were husband and wife.

Answer: True

Alice was always complaining about Ralph and Norton's schemes to get past the cat. She would simply go out and yell at or belt the cat and come back untouched and with cheese to which Ralph would reply - " One of these days, Alice, One of these days- pow right in the kisser!"
5. In "Rocket Bye Baby", a martian baby and earth baby are switched when "In the summer of 1954, the planet passed extremely close to earth, so close that a cosmic force was disturbed and a baby intended for the earth was delivered to Mars, while a Martian baby went by mistake to Earth." Mot the Martian boy is raised by the Wilbur family but is very different from other kids. Which of these play activities does he do in the cartoon?

Answer: all of these

He also does his dad's (Joseph Wilbur) income tax!
6. The Wilburs discover that their real earth boy has ended up on Mars and has been given a name by his Martian parents. What is his name?

Answer: Yob

They are visited by a rocket with a message from Sir U. Tan of Mars, telling them to guard the Martian baby Mot and that they'll soon be able to exchange him for their own son "Yob" (spell it backwards). Mot, however, has taken off in his own little flying saucer and after being chased by Mr. Wilbur flies off to Mars. Mr Wilbur wakes up in the maternity waiting room, realising it was all a dream.

However, when he goes to see his new son in the nursery there is one surprise: the baby's wrist tag reads "Yob."
7. In "Much Ado About Nutting", a nut loving squirrel finds himself in a nut store and goes crazy with each new discovery of a bigger nut. Which type of 'nut' does he spend most of the cartoon trying to crack open?

Answer: coconut

A classic cartoon of facial expressions as time after time the squirrel is frustrated by its inability to open the coconut. After breaking jackhammers, rocks, the pavement at the bottom of the Empire State Building, he finally cracks the coconut open only to find another slightly smaller coconut inside. The look on its face is pure cartoon magic.
8. In "Chow Hound", a bulldog uses a cat and mouse to get him a regular feed. But they keep forgetting one important ingredient the dog wants with his food. What is it?

Answer: Gravy

In this classic cartoon, the cat masquerades as a cat of various owners as well as a sabretoothed cat at the zoo. Each time it gets fed, it has to take the meat to the dog. But each time the dog complains that they forgot the gravy. The cat and mouse get their revenge in the end when finally the dog has eaten too much and is weakened.

He is taken to a room where they pump an endless supply of gravy into the dog with the finishing line - "and this time we didn't forget the gravy!"
9. A few cartoons were made with Ralph and Sam who had an unusual working relationship. They would start and end their days saying hello and goodbye like friends as they clocked in and out of work but during their work day they were natural enemies. Who were Ralph and Sam?

Answer: a wolf and sheepdog

Ralph was the wolf and Sam the sheepdog. My friend and I had a period in our lives when we would always greet each other in the morning with "Morning Ralph" - "Hello Sam". You had to admire Ralph the way he stuck at his job despite copping a beating from Sam every day. And he always went home with a smile on his face and a friendly goodbye for the sheepdog. I always preferred these two to Road Runner and Coyote.

It was much more noble the way Sam use to hurt Ralph - it was just his job - no hard feelings at the end of the day!
10. In "Pizzicato Pussycat", a cat becomes a famous concert pianist thanks to the hidden talents of a mouse who hides in the Grand piano playing the real music. At a big concert, however, the cat is exposed as a fraud, when something happens to the mouse. What happens?

Answer: The mouse's glasses break and he can't read the music

The Joneses hear music coming from another room and when they arrive they see their cat playing the piano. In reality a mouse in exchange for his life is hiding in the piano and letting the cat take the credit. The married couple see money written all over this and show their talented cat to the world.

When things go wrong at the concert,(the cat taps a key to tell the mouse he is ready but breaks the mouse's glasses when he turns around), they are all hounded back to their home. Later as the cat is chasing the mouse, he bangs on drums in trying to hit the mouse.

He shows he does indeed have talent - playing drums. Just as Mr Jones rings the paper to tell them, Mrs Jones says to hang up, not wanting a repeat of the last time. Instead they are content listening to their very talented pets in the privacy of their own living room. That's my take on some of the classic WB Cartoons not starring Bugs and Co. Hope you enjoyed reminiscing about the good old days of animation before they became ads for selling toys to kids!!
