Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, what was the first thing that Jack said he needed?

Answer: Room

Jack's first words in the opening scene were, "Come on, out of the way!" as he wheeled in the injured Boone. Kate, Sun and Hurley followed along behind as Jack called out orders. Jack told Kate to raid Sawyer's things for alcohol and asked Sun to get scissors, but the first thing he said (after telling people to move) was, "I need room!"
2. What was the name of Jack's friend, who was with him in the tuxedo shop and about to give a speech?

Answer: Marc Silverman

In the first flashback, Jack was seen clipping a tie onto his friend and asked, "You nervous, Silverman?" (Although he denied it, Jack knew Marc was afraid to give a speech in front of the crowd.) They then looked in the mirror and Jack said, "You can still back out, Marc." Marc replied, "Nah, it's just a stupid speech." The shop owner asked if the groom was ready and Marc said, "You can still back out, Jack." Jack just shook his head and walked away. Notice, in this flashback, Jack does not yet have the tattoo which is now very prominent his right arm.
3. Does Vincent appear in this episode?

Answer: Yes

Vincent is first seen on the beach, sitting among Michael, Sawyer, and Walt as they are cooking fish over the fire. The group talks to Claire, and they later watch Jin work on the raft. Vincent is also seen at the end of the episode, when Claire is showing her newborn son to the group on the beach (before Sayid and Shannon appear).
4. Sawyer told Michael that Jin had an "overzealous work ethic". Michael agreed, but said it was more like which?

Answer: Obsession

While on the beach watching Jin hammer away at the raft (and coming a long way), Sawyer made the comment about the overzealous work ethic and Michael replied, "Try obsession. He wants off this island bad." Sawyer said that he couldn't blame poor "Kato" (his new nickname for Jin, referring to the character in "The Green Hornet" played by Bruce Lee) for wanting to leave after finding out his wife speaks English and he didn't know. Sawyer added, "I'm surprised he didn't try to swim out of here". Kate appeared then, frantically asking for alcohol, and Sawyer very surprisingly gave it up without even hesitating.
5. In the flashback when Sarah gave her speech for Jack, a large window was behind her. What distinct image could clearly be seen through it?

Answer: A waterfall

I did not notice this until my third viewing of this episode, but seen clearly through the large window is a tropical-looking waterfall streaming by. This could symbolize many things, since the focus is drawn to Sarah and the waterfall is in the background, but it was definitely chosen for some reason. (It filled almost the entire window.) In her speech, Sarah told how Jack was her hero and made a toast to him.
6. The word "lost" was spoken once in this episode, by whom?

Answer: Shannon

As Sayid was leading Shannon to the surprise on the beach, he acted as though he did not know where he was going and Shannon asked him, "Are you lost?" Sayid replied, "No, absolutely not. Those trees look familiar. It is this way... I think". Shannon asked herself, "Did he just say 'I think'?" and followed him to the beach. (Too bad they were so busy there that she had no idea of what was happening to Boone, and was unaware that he was continuously calling her name.)
7. Jin showed that he had learned two new English words by this episode, "Jack" and "Doctor". He said them first to Kate, and then to whom after?

Answer: Hurley

Jin was hammering away feverishly, using the blunt end of the axe on the raft, when he heard Kate's shouts for help. Jin looked up and realized he was alone on the beach, then raced into the jungle after the voice. He came to Kate and Claire, who was going in to labor. Kate asked Jin to get Jack and bring him to Claire. Jin replied, "Jack, Doctor," to show he had understood.

He then raced back to the caves and encountered Hurley, where he repeated the words. Jin had to swallow his anger and pride to allow Sun to translate for him, and tell Jack about Claire.

When Charlie and Jin went back, they had a new message for Kate- she had to deliver the baby.
8. While playing the piano with Sarah, Jack heard a car pull up and thought it was his father. Instead, an older woman arrived. What color hat was she wearing?

Answer: White

The two were talking about vows when they heard the noise. Sarah told Jack, after seeing the red car pull up, "He's going to come" and Jack replied, "I know". The lady coming from the car was wearing a white hat, as well as a violet dress and a striped necklace or shawl of some sort. She was also carrying a tan hand bag.
9. In the flashback, while sitting near the pool, Jack's father said, "_____________ is what makes you tick, Jack".

Answer: Commitment

This was interesting in this episode, because we were able to see a different character in Jack's father. He had often been depicted previously as a more irresponsible- and almost criminal- person. Here, however, we see Jack ask his father for the most important advice when he asks if he should marry Sarah. Jack's father replies, "Commitment is what makes you tick, Jack".

He paused for a moment and then said, "The problem is, you're just not good at letting go."
10. Did Boone die before the baby was born?

Answer: No

The element in this episode which sparked both joy and tragedy was the event of a birth and death occurring simultaneously. Scenes alternated of Boone, fading from his injuries and speaking his last words, and Claire bringing new life to the island with her baby boy.

After Kate's encouraging words of "This baby is all of ours", Claire finally gave birth. In the next scene, Jack's father's words came to life when Boone told Jack he was free of his promise, and asked him to let go. Jack said, "I'm sorry," and Boone replied, "Don't be".

He tried to tell Jack to tell something to Shannon, but died before he could.
11. Sayid had told Shannon, "I had ______, not expectations".

Answer: hopes

On their "date", Shannon revealed to Sayid the true relationship between her and her stepbrother. She asked Sayid to take it slowly and Sayid replied, "I had no expectations." Shannon looked around doubtfully and Sayid admitted to having hopes, not expectations.

The irony in Shannon's words is that she says, "We're here for God knows how long, and so is Boone". Unfortunately this wasn't true, and by choosing not to go back she had given up a chance to see Boone alive and hear what he had to tell her.
12. After the baby was born successfully, Jin reached out and hugged Charlie.

Answer: False

It was a very exciting moment after the long-awaited birth of Claire's baby, especially for those around her during the delivery (Kate, Jin, and Charlie). When the baby finally arrived, Jin offered Charlie a hand shake but it was Charlie who jumped up and hugged Jin. The unusual circumstances had brought the two closer together, even though they had barely spoken at all.
13. On the beach, Claire was showing her newborn son to all of the others. What color was the baby's blanket?

Answer: Blue

The last segment of the episode was, in my opinion, the saddest yet. A moving yet somber melody played as Claire was surrounded on the beach by curious onlookers. (Even Sawyer was smiling!) She grinned proudly, cradling the sleeping baby in a dark blue blanket, and kissed him on the head.

The moment was bittersweet, however, when Hurley motioned to Jack to look up the beach- Sayid and Shannon had returned.
14. In the final scene of the episode (on the beach) we see Jack putting what into his backpack?

Answer: Water bottle

Jack was on the beach alone in the final scene, fighting silently to himself to hold back tears, and was putting a half-empty water bottle in his backpack when Kate appeared. She asked if he wanted to talk, and said, "Boone died, Jack".
"He didn't die," Jack replied. "He was murdered". As Jack walked off down the beach, Kate asked, "Where are you going?"
Jack replied, "To find John Locke."
15. Boone was the __________ person to die on the island (not counting Danielle's team or those who died before the crash)?

Answer: Seventh

The end of "The Pilot" episode left the original 48 survivors. The list of those claimed by the island after the crash is as follows (not counting the Nigerian "priest", Danielle's alleged "team", the bodies known as "Adam and Eve", or whomever else died before the crash): 1) The pilot, 2) The person sucked into the plane, 3) The Marshall, 4) Joanna (the woman who drowned in "White Rabbit"), 5) Scott (who was killed by Ethan), 6) Ethan himself, and 7) Boone. The interesting connection is that in a previous episode, "All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues", while Boone and Locke were searching for Claire and marking the jungle with a red shirt, Boone mentioned that the "Star Trek" characters who wore red were always the ones to get killed. It seemed that this was really foreshadowing Boone's death, and the connection to the mysterious hatch (which holds the answers to the plane crash), may have been foreshadowing another death (Locke's) as well.
