Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the first part of the joined episode, the black smoke is still rising in the distance as survivors on the beach scramble to the caves. Meanwhile, the group of explorers is led by Rousseau to the Black Rock, which is discovered to be a wooden ship several miles inland on the island. Who discovers the crate of explosives inside the ship?

Answer: Kate

When approaching the ship, Hurley voiced everyone's thoughts: "How exactly does something like that happen?"
Danielle replied, "Are you on the same island I am?"
Arzt suggested a tsunami had washed the ship inland. Either way, he refused to enter the "ghost ship" and instead remained outside with Hurley while Locke, Jack, and Kate went inside. There they were surrounded by the signs of imprisonment- chains, shackles, and ropes. Jack stepped the bones which belonged to a shackled skeleton, and Locke concluded that it must be a slave ship en route to a mining colony, departed from the eastern coast of Africa. (He mentioned Mozambique, which is a country in southeastern Africa. It is bordered by Tasmania, South Africa, and Swaziland, and in the 1800's slave trading to the Americas was the main type of commerce.)This places the Black Rock as arriving from the same relative location (continent) as the Nigerian plane, in which Boone had found a transmission. (However, Nigeria is on the western coast of Africa.) Far in the corner of the ship, Kate discovered the crate labeled "Explosives". She attempted to open it with a pickax, though Jack refused to allow it.
2. When Arzt saw Locke and Jack carrying the crate of explosives from the Black Rock, he began panicking and demanded that they lower it down gently and back away. He proceeded to tell them the tragic story of which inventor?

Answer: Ascanio Sobrero

Arzt went into teacher-like mode again, and gave unwelcome and bossy authority to Jack and Kate. He gave a "lesson" about what happens to nitroglycerin in ninety degree heat (it "sweats") and how it is the most dangerous and unstable explosive known to man. His story was about Ascanio Sobrero, an Italian inventor who discovered nitroglycerin in 1846 and did indeed have an explosion which resulted in severe facial injury. (He deemed it thereafter as impossible to handle and far too dangerous to use.)
Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist who experimented with nitroglycerin and invented dynamite in 1866. Edward Teller helped invent nuclear dynamite, which led to the creation of the hydrogen bomb.
The lesson became real when there was an explosion, and there was the end of Arzt.
3. In Jin's flashback, Sun opened a container which read "_________ Sandwich".

Answer: Croissant

The first Sun/Jin flashback to the airport occurred in the first part of "Exodus", from Sun's point of view. This was from Jin's point of view, and revealed what happened after Jin left for the restroom.
After Sun opened the "croissant sandwich" and spilled the coffee on his lap, Jin hurried towards the restroom and coincidentally walked by Sayid (who had come from questioning by airline officials as a result Shannon's accusation). This was the first of many encounters with one another that the survivors would have prior to boarding the plane.
4. How many sinks were in the bathroom in Jin's flashback?

Answer: 5

In the restroom, Jin was struggling to wash the stains from his clothing when a tourist in a bright shirt asked for paper towels. The man was understanding that Jin did not speak English, and then began speaking fluent Korean! Jin knew he was being followed, and the man threatened that he would lose Sun if he continued with his plan to run away to California. He told Jin that he would deliver that watch to Mr. Paik's friend, and reminded him, "You are not free. You never have been, and you never will be." The use of the mirror cleverly reflected Jin's terror. This was in stark contrast to Jin on the raft, lifting his head and staring all around at open freedom.
Back on beach, Sun looked down at her wedding ring and the new hope for love it held.
Meanwhile, Sayid helped Shannon move Boone's things with her to the caves although she still held a hostile attitude toward him.
5. Locke told Jack that they should bring how many sticks of dynamite to the hatch?

Answer: Six

Locke told Jack that they needed two for sticks to take care of the hinge, three to "be safe". Jack sarcastically replied, "Be safe?" Everyone knew of the tremendous risk involved, especially after seeing what had happened to Arzt. Therefore, Locke suggested that they take six and split those, three and three, in case something should happen. Throughout the removal, there was a constant battle for leadership and authority between Jack and Locke, neither eager to take orders from the other. Tension was high and friction heated as the two strained to remove the bombs.
Meanwhile, Hurley admitted to Kate that he believed Arzt's accident was caused by his bad luck.
As they cautiously removed the sticks, Locke asked Jack if he had played "Operation" (the second game mentioned by Locke, following "Mousetrap"). Locke said he always was nailed by the funny bone. Jack asked Locke with a hint of accusation, "You like to play games, John?" Locke replied with a sinister eye, "Absolutely."
6. In Charlie's flashback, Charlie is searching a trashed hotel room for his bag of heroin before taking off on the flight. He pushes aside a girl in bed to continue searching, and a fight ensues over the drugs. What word is prominently visible on the girl's shirt?

Answer: Poison

Charlie remembers his desperation to find his drugs before leaving for the flight, and his unusual circumstances with the girl in the hotel. (It was apparent that she did not care at all about Charlie or his band, and wanted only a fix of his drugs.)
So much had obviously changed for Charlie, as he now stood with Claire on the beach and presented his newly invented baby carrier for "Turnip Head". Claire was visibly stressed, saying that no one had taught her how to care for a baby and knowing that the "others" were coming for her child. Charlie vowed to protect her and the baby and she kissed him on the cheek to thank him.
Charlie still clenched his beloved heroin at the end of the flashback, and was unaware that soon he would be confronted by it once again.
7. On the raft, several hours after departure, Sawyer was entertaining himself by reading the messages in a bottle (much to Walt's chagrin). He mentioned to Walt the message of a woman who missed her husband and two kids. What was her name?

Answer: Tracy

Sawyer told Walt, "I for one never knew how much Tracy missed her hubby and two kids back in Fresno." He added that she seemed to have taken on a particular liking to Scott, and Walt reminded Sawyer that it was Steve, and Scott was dead. Ironically, Sawyer unknowingly read Hurley's message (which he had ordered Charlie not to look at), which revealed that "Hugo" had won $160 million dollars playing the lottery. (Another re-occurrence of the numbers.) Walt resented that Sawyer read the personal messages and learned that the only letter Sawyer ever wrote was to the man he still planned to kill.
8. After Rousseau kidnapped Claire's baby, Charlie and Sayid set out after her. Did Sayid give Charlie a gun?

Answer: Yes

When Danielle arrived and demanded Sayid, she pleaded with Claire in desperation to hold the child. Claire was reluctant, and recognized the scratches she had made on Danielle's arm. She was too late. When Charlie returned, he and Sayid found an injured Claire and an empty cradle. Charlie acted in anger and hit Sayid, who overpowered him and said there was plenty of blame to go around.

The two took off into the jungle, towards the black smoke, and Sayid gave Charlie a gun from the Halliburton. He warned him not to make it personal.

They were confronted by a handmade trap, which injured Charlie. Sayid told Charlie as he fixed the wound, "Don't apply reason to her actions. She is a mother who lost her child... just like Claire."
9. In Michael and Walt's flashback, Michael is frustrated by Walt's behavior and leaves to make a phone call. After Michael hangs up the receiver, it is revealed that Walt was behind him the entire time.

Answer: False

Walt is seated beside Michael silently, refusing to look up from his video game, visibly still upset about getting on the plane. Michael goes to the pay phone to make a call, saying over and over that this wasn't "supposed" to be this way and it wasn't part of his plan. As he leaned in against the receiver several people passed by, including Locke being wheeled by one of the airport attendants. (However, Walt is not behind him at this time and therefore was not present for the entire conversation.)
Michael was begging his mother to take Walt. Stressed and unsure of what to do, Michael turned around and was face to face with his son, who simply said, "I need new batteries."
(This could actually be an important clue, since batteries are so vital on the island.)
10. On the raft, Michael allows Walt to take control of steering the raft. In which direction does he say they are headed?

Answer: North/Northeast

It is clear that the two are getting closer, though Walt continues asking questions that Michael finds difficulty in answering.
The directions Michael gives Walt are important to note. He tells Walt that they are heading North/Northeast (according to the compass). This will place the "others" as coming from the west, since they appear on the left side of the radar screen. The smoke signal discovered by Sayid and Charlie may have been on the west side of the island, then. This explains how there were no footprints, since the "others" came by sea, and when heading off the radar the "others" may have been headed back to the island.
Another important clue is that the raft hits the random log and loses the rudder just after Walt takes control. (And, coincidentally, Michael told Walt that the rudder was the most important part of the raft.) Was it an accident, or had Walt used his "powers" to intentionally attempt to stop the raft?
After Sawyer bravely rescued the rudder, Michael discovered the gun in his shirt and warned him to put it back on so he "wouldn't burn".
11. After the dynamite had been loaded into the packs and the group was ready to set off, Locke mentioned that there was approximately how many minutes until the sun would set?

Answer: Ninety minutes

After an argument about who would carry the explosives, Locke elected to draw straws to see who would risk their life. He and Kate drew short sticks, much to Jack's resentment, though it was later revealed that Jack had carried the dynamite all along. Locke urged them to hustle and stay a safe distance from one another. If they were to see anything, such as Hurley's suggestion of a "security system that eats people", they were to drop their bags and run.
The encounter with the island monster seemed inevitable as the group headed towards the hatch, and the "Dark Territory".
12. As Sayid and Charlie raced for the black smoke, Sayid told Charlie, "We're losing ________. Try to keep up!"

Answer: Light

Charlie urged Sayid on, despite his head injury and his inability to keep up with the agile soldier. As they raced across a narrow cliff side above a pool of deep blue waves, Sayid warned about losing daylight and the urgency to hurry on. They raced through the jungle and finally stopped at the site of the Nigerian plane wreckage where Boone had fallen.

Although it is unknown of Sayid's knowledge and intention, he threw one of the heroin-filled Mary statues and it shattered at Charlie's feet. Exposed to the ultimate temptation, it seemed Charlie may have been losing his own light as he stared down at the coveted prize he once held so dear. Sayid moves on, but Charlie lingers: Will he accept the sin?
13. Throughout this part of "Exodus", the theology of fate and destiny is presented to many of the survivors face-to-face. There are those who believe, and those who do not. Rose was the one survivor who always held faith, yet she did not appear with speaking lines in "Exodus". Did she appear at all throughout the episode?

Answer: No

Sun tells Shannon that she believes fate is punishing them for what they had done and the lies that they told. A devastated Claire replies, "There is no such thing as fate."
Meanwhile, Locke tells Jack that everyone was brought to the island for a reason, and had mentioned about letting fate decide, while Jack said he did not believe in fate or destiny.
Michael went on about what was "supposed" to happen (and not "supposed" to). It seemed those who did not believe had been turned away by destiny, while those who did had only faith. One such example was Rose who, although did not appear at all (even as an extra) in "Exodus", still remains in my opinion to be a vital part of the survivor's fate.
14. As Hurley and Locke ponder the contents of the hatch on their hike through the jungle, which does Hurley mention third in his list?

Answer: Cell phones

Obviously, being rescued is not first on Hurley's mind either. The first thing he mentions is TV dinners (possibly from the fifties) and TVs with cable. He then adds some cell phones, clean socks, soap... all of the hospitalities from home which are greatly missed. Even Locke had to laugh when Hurley mentioned Twinkies for dessert, saying that he liked Twinkies as well.
15. Which of Hurley's "numbers" comes up in his conversation with Locke about the contents of the hatch?

Answer: 8

Hurley goes on and on about what he hopes to find in the hatch, mentioning that Twinkies can last for about 8,000 years. (This proves that the numbers- and possibly the bad luck- do indeed surround even his most random thoughts.
Hurley asks Locke what he believes is inside and Locke replies, "Hope. I think Hope's inside."
Despite the negativity surrounding the hatch- Boone's tragic death, Walt's warning to Locke, and the cursed numbers inscribed upon it- was it possible that Hope did remain inside?
The survivors were about to find out soon enough.
