"Malcolm in the Middle" Episode 1 Quiz

Lois and Hal are the mom and dad of this very dysfunctional family. Lois is shaving Hal at the start of the episode and not just the face, but his back and chest as well. Hal stands naked, calmly reading the paper as Lois shaves him in the kitchen. Apparently he has sensitive skin and gets itchy if he isn't shaved once a month. Lois talks about a better use for the hair than simply throwing it away, including birds using it for nests.

Malcolm's younger brother is called Dewey. He holds his own in a rough and tumble household. His older brothers argue about who has to look after him (as older siblings do) as they're walking to school. In the first episode, Malcolm reluctantly agrees to walk with Dewey to school because Reese did it after Dewey peed his pants. Dewey even gets Malcolm to hold his hand on the way there.

Francis is away at military school. Malcolm describes him as a good person however the audience is shown several incidents of Francis getting into trouble. Francis is shown with a police officer, with a girl in her room who's getting dressed and with a car on fire. Francis calls home and can be seen smoking as he asks his mom for his allowance money to be sent to him.

Malcolm creates a drawing that his teacher praises. As he's up out of his seat showing his art project to his teacher, the school bully places a tub of red paint on his seat that Malcolm doesn't see and sits in. Of course he is called up to the office and has to embarrassingly walk around with red paint all over the seat of his pants.

Lois sets Malcolm up on a play date with Stevie who is in a wheelchair. Malcolm does not want to hang out with the "weird" kid but does go over to his house to hang out. While at Stevie's house, at first he is struggling to find something in common with him but finds out that Stevie enjoys (and has a huge collection of) comics. The two become friends.

On a Saturday morning, the boys are watching television and Lois is running around collecting laundry. She is walking around with no shirt or bra on and answers the door completely shirtless. Malcolm's teacher is at the door and wants to talk to her about Malcolm attending class for 'special' students. His teacher is embarrassed but Lois is not concerned at all about her bare breasts.

Lois finds out that Malcolm is incredibly intelligent. His teacher recommends that he join the special class so that he can get better educational opportunities. Lois is really proud and wants to give her son the best opportunity but Malcolm does not want any part of it.

He tells his mom that he will be made fun of and doesn't want to do anything that will make him stand out. Of course he ends up going to the class.

Malcolm finally stands up to the bully, yelling at him at recess. Malcolm grabs Stevie's chocolate pudding and throws it at the bully and the bully retaliates by aiming to punch Malcolm. Malcolm ducks and the bully catches Stevie on the chin. He barely touches him but Stevie knocks himself over in his wheelchair and all the students are horrified that the bully tried to hurt him. Stevie gets all kinds of attention and sympathy as he smiles knowingly at Malcolm.

Answer: Better Days

After the incident with the bully, Malcolm is smiling back at Stevie as the song "Better Days (And the Bottom Drops Out)" by Citizen King plays. As the credits roll, Malcolm talks about making the best of the situation that he's in. Birds are seen grabbing up Hal's hair as Malcolm sits on top of a box. Dewey is heard asking to come out and it is clear that Malcolm has him trapped in there.
