Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was once known as the "Masked Singer;" now I have a morning radio show on YLRB, and I do vocals for Ethel Page's organ recitals on the third Tuesday of each month.

Answer: Leonard Blush

Leonard Blush was heard, but never seen. He was voiced by Howard Morris, who played our beloved Ernest T. Bass in five memorable episodes!
2. I guess you could say I'm responsible for one of the all-time great romances -- Barney Fife and Thelma Lou. They met at my funeral in 1960.

Answer: Wilton Blair

This was just a bit of info that Barney threw out in the episode, "Barney's Physical." As Andy said, that and moving into Mrs. Mendlebright's boarding house must have been the highlights of Barney's life!
3. I taught school in Mayberry for many years. My students nicknamed me "the beast of the fourth floor." Boy, they sure were mean.

Answer: Mrs. Von Roeder

Andy and Barney often reminisced about their old school days. In the episode, "Opie loves Helen," they spoke of Mrs. Von Roeder, the "beast of the fourth floor." Seems the class were "beasts" to the teacher: They put ink in her thermos, a tack on her chair, and a garter snake in her desk drawer!
4. I went to Mayberry Union High School with Andy and Barney; don't tell Barney, but I blackballed him from membership in the Philomathian Society.

Answer: Jack Egbert

Barney only discovered that Jack Egbert had blackballed him when he and Andy, years later, were looking through Barney's old high school yearbook, and Andy let that slip. Andy knew about it because he was the Philomathian secretary. The news upset Barney, who proclaimed that "Jack Egbert was no prize."
5. I was sickly all my life. Even though Bee Taylor and I were exactly the same age, she and I were never close friends. In spite of that, I understand she took my death very hard.

Answer: Augusta Finch

From the episode, "Aunt Bee's Medicine Man."
Aunt Bee was startled by the news of "Gussie's" death simply because they were the same age. Andy tried unsuccessfully to point out that while Mrs. Finch had always been sickly, Aunt Bee had always enjoyed good health. Aunt Bee, however, decided to try an Indian elixir sold by a sidewalk medicine man, which made her gloriously drunk!
6. My two brothers and I send greetings from State Prison! I sing "My Little Gray Home in the West" at cell parties. Andy and Barney are planning to come up and see us some Sunday.

Answer: Junior Hubacher

The Hubacher Brothers wrote to Andy and Barney from state prison and one Christmas sent gifts: a wallet for Andy and a bookmark for Barney.
7. Come to me for words of wisdom: even though I'm only four years old, I've been around plenty.

Answer: Nat Pike

Nat Pike is a friend of Opie's. He always has sage advice, which Opie takes to heart. In the episode, "Quiet Sam," Opie relates that Nat has told him a penny hit by lightning is worth six cents!
8. My father is well-to-do: he owns a third interest in a prune-pitting factory, where I work. I'm single, but I once had a date with Barney Fife. (My father went along!)

Answer: Halcyon Loretta Winslow

From the episode, "The Darling Baby."
Barney nicknamed her "Beasto Maristo," after meeting Halcyon and her father at Klein's Coffee House for lunch. Her father had thought she and Barney would make a good match, but Barney thought otherwise. He told Andy she eventually went off to a finishing school, but she's still "ugly, single, and pitting prunes."
9. Oh, good Heavens! Is that the sound of Yankee cannons? Are the Yankees coming? I'd better call the sheriff's office and find out!

Answer: Mrs. Vickers

Old Mrs. Vickers must have been a bit senile. In the episode, "The Loaded Goat," every time the highway crew blasted, she thought it was the Yankees coming to take Mayberry!
10. My sister, Maude, lives in Mayberry, and I live in Mt. Pilot. We're both in our eighties and visit by phone every Sunday afternoon. Oh, and our feet fall asleep!

Answer: Cora Mendlebright

The Mendlebright sisters are the source of much frustration for Malcolm Tucker, the "Man in a Hurry." It seems all of Mayberry is on one party line, and everybody lets the elderly sisters talk all Sunday afternoon. Mr. Tucker tries, to no avail, to get them off the phone so he can make an important call, but they continue to talk about their feet falling asleep!
