Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The EMH was activated on Voyager after the death of the crew's medical staff. What was the name of the Chief Medical Officer that The Doctor replaced?

Answer: Dr. Fitzgerald

Dr. Fitzgerald was played by Jeff McCarthy. You may remember him from his more prominent role as Roga Danar in the 1990 "TNG" episode "The Hunted", where he was an escaped Angosian super-engineered soldier.

Question by reedy
2. Which crew member activated The Doctor for the very first time in the premiere episode "Caretaker"?

Answer: Ensign Kim

The Doctor appeared and uttered his early catchphrase, "Please state the nature of the medical emergency." After that, his crotchety bedside manner quickly came to the forefront. Another quirk that soon came to light was his irritation at others who would forget to deactivate his program when they left sickbay.

For those possibly confused by the lack of a rank given in front of Tom Paris' name, I left it as such because at the beginning of the series, Paris was not an active member of Starfleet. In fact, he had been temporarily released from prison to help the Voyager crew track down the Maquis.

3. In the episode "Tattoo," The Doctor decided to create a program to give him the symptoms of the 29-hour Levodian flu to in an attempt to learn what it is like when humans get sick as an "educational experience," and also to show how many on the crew complain too much about simple illnesses. Who tampered with The Doctor's program so his symptoms lasted longer?

Answer: Kes

Kes added a couple hours to the duration of the flu to make The Doctor have a more realistic experience because as she said, it is hardly a fair test when The Doctor knew the exact time he would be better as this is not how it works in real life. When he didn't get better right on time the poor doctor felt that he was just just dying and "fading away," so he contacted Janeway to have a technician sent to fix his program! This proved unnecessary after Kes explained what happened.

Question by christi_dove
4. The Doctor, in his pursuit of all things human, has pursued many hobbies and activities such as singing, writing, being a mentor, and creating a holo-family. In which of these hobbies/activities have we NOT seen him participating?

Answer: Orbital skydiving

I just had to do another question on a 'Star Trek' character's hobbies and interests! It was not shown The Doctor trying his hand at orbital skydiving. It was B'Elanna Torres who took to this recreational activity made very dangerous when she turned the safety protocols off on the holodeck in the episode "Extreme Risk." You may well be asking yourself when was The Doctor the village priest? Remember the episodes depicting the holographic town of Fair Haven which was created by Tom Paris? This traditional Irish village can be seen in the episodes "Fair Haven" and "Spirit Folk."

The Doctor loved his holo-imager on which he could record three dimensional images of sites and events on away missions and also to provide three dimensional images of the crew members for their medical records. It was in the episode "Latent Image," his holo-imager provided disturbing clues to a conspiracy he uncovered. In the episode "Drone," The doctor brought along a holo-imager to record a proto-nebula when members of the crew conducted an astronomical survey.

The Doctor became interested in dating when he fell in love with a Vidiian, Denara Pel, while he desperately worked with her to save her life from the phage ("Lifesigns"). He created a holographic body for her while her real body underwent treatments. He even went to Tom Paris for advice on dating.

5. What was the piece of technology called that gave The Doctor the ability to move freely on the ship as well as go on real away missions? This device was called the _______ emitter. What missing word goes in the blank?

Answer: mobile

("Future's End, Part II") The mobile emitter was 29th century technology, ironically obtained when Voyager accidentally went back to the 20th century. The mobile emitter was either stolen by Henry Starling from the Captain Braxton's timeship, Aeon, or developed by him based on the technology he stole and made a profit from. With this technology The Doctor was no longer confined to Sickbay or the holodeck.

The "Memory Alpha.com" website in the article "Mobile emitter" defines the device as "a wholly self-contained holographic projector, generating the photos and force fields necessary to allow a hologram to physically interact with its environment," and also as an "autonomous self-sustaining mobile holo-emitter, or mobile emitter . . . designed to remotely power and enable a single holographic instance away from in-garrisoned holoemitters." Quite a mouthful!

In the series other holographic characters were able to successfully use the mobile emitter. These included Leonardo da Vinci (from Captain Janeway's holoprogram); the EMH from USS Equinox (the one whose ethical subroutines were deleted by the crew of the Equinox); the hologram of Reginald Barclay (though this one was really controlled by a Ferengi); and Michael Sullivan, whom we first met in the episode "Fair Haven" as a romantic interest of Captain Janeway's, used the mobile emitter in the episode "Spirit Folk."

6. In "Voyager's" third season, The Doctor's memory capacity was reached, and his program began to degrade. What other program was melded with The Doctor's to preserve him?

Answer: Diagnostic Program Alpha-11

The Diagnostic Program Alpha-11 was another hologram program that the crew used to determine what the problem was with The Doctor. When no other solution could be found, Kes suggested the merging of the two holographic matrices. The plan worked, but not without a great deal of memory loss on the part of The Doctor.

Question by reedy
7. In an effort to have a more realistic existence, The Doctor created a holodeck family for himself. In addition to a wife and two children, he also gave himself a name. What was it?

Answer: Kenneth

At first, The Doctor created an ideal family with perfect children and a perfect wife. With The Doctor's permission, B'Elanna Torres made some modifications to make the program more realistic. The Doctor ended up being faced with a rebellious teenager, a disillusioned wife, and a daughter who experienced an accident with a wound that The Doctor couldn't fix.

Question by reedy
8. What role did The Doctor play in the "Captain Proton" adventure on the holodeck?

Answer: President of Earth

Voyager ground to a dead stop on what was dubbed 'a subspace sandbar.' When this occurred, Paris and Kim were running a "Captain Proton" adventure and were forced to beam out, leaving the program running.

Whilst they were away, a group of photonic lifeforms entered the holodeck, who believed that the scenario was reality and that Paris and Kim as carbon-based lifeforms were not real. As a result, The Doctor was drafted in as the President of Earth to convince them they should leave.

Question by Daddy19
9. The Doctor's program suffered a serious problem when, faced with having to treat two crewmembers with identical symptoms, he chose to treat Ensign Kim. What was the name of the crewmember who didn't survive as a result?

Answer: Ensign Ahni Jetal

Mabor Jetrel was not a member of Voyager's crew, however he was the Haakonian scientist responsible for the Metrion Cascade that destroyed Neelix's home planet. Kellin was from Ramura and briefly spent time on Voyager in the episode "Unforgettable." Aquiel Uhnari was seen in the "TNG" episode "Aquiel" and held the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

The episode "Latent Image," The Doctor discovers some of his memories have been altered and feels violated. He was particularly surprised to find out that all of the crew were aware it had happened... until Captain Janeway explained the conflict within his program.

10. The Doctor was a mentor to Seven of Nine in her reintroduction to humanity after she was freed from the Borg Collective. In the episode "Someone to Watch over Me" he tried to get Seven to develop an interest or hobby and has her try singing. What well known piece of music did they sing together after he discovered Seven had an amazing singing voice?

Answer: You are My Sunshine

The Doctor and Seven singing "You are My Sunshine" is one of my favorite scenes in "Star Trek: Voyager." Jeri Ryan does truly have a lovely voice and Seven and The Doctor sing very well together. If you would like to see this clip you can on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBbWC7Z8J0Q&feature=related .
The verbal exchange between Seven and The Doctor when they were discussing developing interests, hobbies and goals is very funny. When asked by The Doctor what she does in her off duty hours, Seven replies "regenerate." When asked what she wants out of life she says "perfection." Seven also stated she "dislikes irrelevant conversations." I am sure most of us saw the humor in The Doctor, who was not human himself and was in fact a hologram deciding to coach Seven of Nine in matters of being human.

And if you are interested you can also find a young Jeri Ryan singing Amazing Grace on another clip on YouTube but I am not sure from what movie this clip is from.

Question by christi_dove
11. In the episode "Critical Care", The Doctor's program is stolen and sold to a hospital ship run by Administrator Chellick. What was the name of the species that the Doctor was required to treat?

Answer: Dinaali

The Dinaali had a huge population and their government was unable to cope so they turned to Chellick's species, the Jye, as they were excellent adminstrators. However, their allocation of medical treatment was done on a statistical basis without any emotional input. When the Doctor tried to circumvent the system, a patient died after being released from the hospital as The Doctor had administered more treatment than his 'TC' (Treatment Co-efficient) permitted.

Question by Daddy19
12. The Doctor almost left Voyager to stay with a race of people, the Qomar, whose first introduction to music ever was through him.

Answer: True

Janeway sure wasn't happy with The Doctor's decision to leave Voyager to sing opera and they had a huge argument about it and his rights as an individual and not just a piece of technology. She eventually reluctantly agrees he can go and he starts to tell crew members goodbye. Of course, Seven was not pleased with his decision either and was very hurt.

It turns out he did not leave Voyager because the Qomar, Tincoo, created a more advanced holomatrix which could sing extremely complicated pieces The Doctor could not. The Qomar were not interested in the feeling and meaning behind music but more in the complexity and mathematics of it. The disheartened doctor wanted to delete all his musical subroutines but Captain Janeway would not let him. A touching scene at the end of the episode occurred when Seven gave him a supportive letter written by a fan in order to cheer him up. It turns out Seven wrote the letter herself and The Doctor was touched.

Question by christi_dove
13. In the episode "Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy," The Doctor daydreams that he has been given the ability to turn into an Emergency Command Hologram (ECH). Does this daydream become a reality?

Answer: Yes

At the end of "Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy," Janeway authorizes research into whether The Doctor's program could be expanded to include ECH subroutines.

The season 7 two-part episode "Workforce" saw The Doctor in the red command uniform and as he recounted events to Chakotay and Kim, the audience sees Janeway transfer command of Voyager to the Emergency Command Hologram.

Question by Daddy19
14. What was the name of the holonovel written by The Doctor in the episode "Author, Author"?

Answer: Photons Be Free

The Doctor's story, "Photons Be Free," was based on the crew of USS Voyager, but with some details slightly altered and exaggerated. The ship was USS Vortex and the crew were oppressive. The flirty Lt. Paris became the womanizer Lt. Marseille.

Needless to say the crew were not thrilled with this depiction. Neither was Starfleet when the publisher decided to release it without The Doctor's consent.

Question by Daddy19
15. At the end of the "Voyager" series, The Doctor asked to be transferred to Starfleet Medical Academy rather than stay a part of the ship.

Answer: False

The Doctor's final fate is never revealed. His last action in the series finale "Endgame" was to deliver Tom and B'Elanna's baby while in the Borg transwarp hub. Apart from a message to Tom saying "There's someone here who'd like to say 'Hello'", nothing further is known of what happened to The Doctor.
