Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Doctor Bashir joined the ranks of "Star Trek" characters with an unusual middle name. What is it?

Answer: Subotai

Lafayette is Sisko's middle name. Tiberius famously belongs to James Kirk and Eugene is the middle name of Tom Paris.

Julian Subotai Bashir is the only child of Richard and Amsha Bashir.

Question by Daddy19
2. In the episode "Doctor Bashir, I Presume" a secret about Julian was revealed. What was it?

Answer: He was genetically enhanced

Julian initially struggled at school. As a result, his parents took him to Adigeon Prime where his DNA was resequenced. To prevent awkward questions, when they returned to Earth, the Bashir family moved to a different city, enabling them to enroll Julian in a different school.

Question by Daddy19
3. Before Julian began his medical training, he almost chose to pursue a different career. What was it?

Answer: Professional tennis player

In the second-season episode "Melora", Julian is dining on live Racht (where you can still see the blood running through the veins) with Melora when he recounts a story from his childhood where he had seen a girl die who could have been saved by a simple herb. She asked him if that was why he had decided to study medicine. He responded by saying that he had thought of pursuing a career as a professional tennis player, but later found out that he was better at medicine.

4. What was the mistake Dr. Julian Bashir made on the oral exam of his medical finals which caused him to graduate 2nd in his class as salutatorian? He mixed up a preganglionic f______ for a postganglionic n_______ . What are the two missing words? The first letter of each word is provided for you. Please put them in the order given and do not use "and."

Answer: fiber nerve

This question is not really an obscure one due to the fact Julian was very fond of telling this story so we, the viewers, got to hear it at least three times. And of course I gave very helpful clues! So hopefully with the clues given you were able to remember it was preganglionic fiber and postganglionic nerve.

Question by christi_dove
5. In Season 2, Dr. Julian Bashir went to extraordinary lengths to save Garak's life. What was wrong with Garak?

Answer: A cranial implant he had was deteriorating.

The implant, a device developed by the Obsidian Order, Garak had in his brain was originally given to him so he could resist torture by releasing endorphins. Having trouble coping with being isolated, despised, and very physically uncomfortable on Deep Space 9, Garak began to use the device more and more frequently until it was on all the time. The implant started to malfunction which gave Garak terrible headaches and was killing him.

Quark was unable to obtain a new one for Garak on the black market because the implant was classified. Julian went to great lengths to help learn what was wrong with Garak first turning to Odo who secretly observed Quarks transmissions and communications. Bashir kept vigil over Garak while he was unconscious. Bashir even took a runabout to track down the former head of the Obsidian Order, Enabren Tain, to find a way to save Garak.

"The Wire" is a very powerful episode with brilliant dialogue between Julian and Garak. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it. The writing is superb and the twisting tales of Garak intriguing and clever.

Question by christi_dove
6. What was Dr. Bashir's Starfleet rank when he arrived at Deep Space Nine?

Answer: Lieutenant Junior Grade

Dr. Bashir did not see a promotion until the 4th season of "DS9", achieving the rank of full Lieutenant in the year 2372.

Question by reedy
7. In the 4th season episode of "Deep Space 9" Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien were taken prisoner by a Jem'Hadar who wanted Julian to develop a cure for the Jem'Hadars' addiction and complete reliance on ketracel-white. Was Dr. Julian Bashir successful in developing a cure?

Answer: No

No, he was not successful. After Bashir and O'Brien's runabout crashed on a planet they became captives of the Jem'Hadar. When the First, Goran'Agar, discovered Bashir was a doctor he orders him to find a cure so the Jem'Hadar could be free of ketracel-white. Goran'Agar did not need ketracel-white anymore and believed the cure could be found on this planet he had been stranded on before. Julian tried very hard to find a cure but was unable to and thought perhaps Goran'Agar was a biological or genetic anomaly and had never really needed ketracel to begin with ("DS9: Hippocratic Oath").

One thing very interesting about this episode was the conflict between O'Brien and Bashir over their greatly conflicting views about the Jem'Hadar and if they should be helped. Bashir saw them as slaves to the Vorta, the Founders, and the drug and capable of becoming productive beings if freed from this addiction. O'Brien saw the Jem'Hadar purely as Dominion soldiers created by the Founders as killing machines and feared if the Founders could no longer control the Jem'Hadar by using the drug, they would become even more destructive and a greater threat to the Federation. O'Brien ultimately had to destroy Bashir's equipment and research in order to get him to leave the planet before they were both killed by the Jem'Hadar. O'Brien thought it was the only way to save Bashir's life.

Question by christi_dove
8. Luther Sloan tried to recruit Dr. Bashir into a secretive Federation intelligence group. What was it called?

Answer: Section 31

In the sixth-season episode "Inquisition", Section 31 operative Luther Sloan abducted Dr. Bashir and submitted him to a test by means of a holographic simulation to determine his potential as a recruit. In the end, Julian was offered a position within Section 31, but he turned it down.

Sloan's interference did not end there, as he returned to utilize Dr. Bashir again in the season seven episodes "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" and "Extreme Measures".

9. In the second season episode "Armageddon Game" Sisko received the very tragic news that Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien had been killed in a freak accident while they were attempting to destroy biological weapons at the request of the formerly warring races. What was the first thing to alert somebody all was not as it seemed in the story given to the crew on Deep Space 9 as to what happened to Julian and Miles?

Answer: A cup of coffee

Yes, it was the recording of the security sensors which showed the scientists and Bashir and O'Brien which caused Keiko, O'Brien's wife, to believe they had been tampered with because it showed her husband drinking coffee late in the afternoon. Keiko was adamant her husband never would drink coffee late in the afternoon because it would keep him up all night and this was enough to convince Sisko and Dax to dig deeper into the matter. Sisko and Dax went to get Bashir and O'Brien's runabout early and Dax found a discrepancy in the Ganges' computer log.

The formerly warring factions killed their own scientists and tried to kill O'Brien and Bashir, all of whom worked so hard to find a way to safely destroy the stockpile of biogenic weapons (called harvesters). They felt this was justified because they wanted nobody alive who had knowledge of how to create the weapons. They tried to cover up the deaths as an accident from a hidden security program O'Brien accidentally activated. I am sure I am not the only one who thinks this is an extremely distorted and barbaric way to try and ensure peace.

This episode showed the first inkling of the great friendship which would develop between Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien. Though Miles did confide to his wife he found Julian annoying because he never stops talking. Well his actual words were "it was hell." But O'Brien saved Julian's life from the soldier who tried to shoot him and Julian saved O'Brien's life when he became infected by the harvester virus and what better way to start a friendship is there?

And the funniest thing was Keiko finding out at the very end her husband does drink coffee in the afternoon! Boy was she surprised.

Question by christi_dove
10. Julian Bashir loved the holosuites and often along with Miles O'Brien visited them for entertainment and adventure. Which of the following was NOT one of the scenarios/activities he pursued in the holosuites of Quark's?

Answer: Tsunkatse

Hopefully you remembered "Tsunkatse" was actually an episode of "Star Trek: Voyager" and also the name of the sport featured in it. Seven of Nine and Tuvok were abducted and Seven was forced to take part in this savage sport. Tuvok was too severly injured in an explosion to participate. Tsunkatse had matches that were to the death.

"Our Man Bashir" was the episode that was in the style of the James Bond movies. According to the "Memory Alpha.org" website article "Our Man Bashir," this episode was in tribute to Ian Fleming, James Bond, and similar style of spy movies and TV shows, many of which influenced the style of this episode and its characters. This article also states this episode aired only ten days after the release of "Goldeneye" starring Pierce Brosnan. Apparently MGM, which produced the James Bond movies at the time, was not pleased at all with this episode that came too close to characters and situations of the original. A letter of protest was written to the producers of "Star Trek: DS9."

And of course Vic's Lounge, a holographic program at Quark's, was a favorite hangout for the crew on Deep Space 9. Felix, a friend of Julian's wrote the program for him.

And who can forget Julian and Miles dressed in their costumes for The Battle of Britain or The Alamo holoprograms. Miles O'Brien even built a scale model of Alamo mission in order to come up with battle plans.

Question by christi_dove
11. Dr. Bashir foiled a plot by the Dominion to replace Chief O'Brien with a Changeling in the episode "In Purgatory's Shadow".

Answer: False

The season five episode had Dr. Bashir away at a burn treatment conference on Meezan IV when he was abducted as he slept, waking up in a Dominion internment camp. While imprisoned, a Changeling took his place back at Deep Space Nine with the goal to trigger a supernova in the Bajoran sun.

Question by reedy
12. Doctor Bashir was selected as the template for the LMH (Long-Term Medical Hologram). Consequently, when Voyager's Doctor was transferred to USS Prometheus, did he interact with a holographic version of Bashir?

Answer: No

Doctor Zimmerman initially selected Julian Bashir as the template for the LMH, whilst this was being tested, Julian's genetically enhanced status was inadvertently revealed. As such, Zimmerman deemed Julian to be unsuitable as the template.

Voyager's doctor interacted with a fellow EMH on USS Prometheus, played by Andy Dick.

Question by Daddy19
13. What was the name of the Dominion prison camp in which Julian Bashir was held?

Answer: Internment Camp 371

This was an unexpected twist in the Changeling/Dominion storyline. One minute you see Bashir preventing Garak from stealing a runabout from Deep Space Nine. The next minute he's being released from solitary confinement on board a Dominion prison camp.

The Jem'Hadar First identifies the internment camp when welcoming Worf and Garak to the facility.

Question by Daddy19
14. Julian was infatuated with Jadzia Dax, but nothing ever came of it. After Jadzia died, did Bashir 'hook up' with Ezri Dax?

Answer: Yes

Despite an initial reactive response to avoid each other, Julian and Ezri were inevitably drawn to one another. On the eve of the final battle with the Dominion, the two of them spent a night of passion together.

Question by reedy
15. What was Julian Bashir's blood type?

Answer: B negative

Blood screenings were regularly carried out from the middle of "Deep Space Nine's" run by the crew as a way of identifying changeling infiltrators. The blood of a 'solid' would remain blood, however when any part of a changeling is detached, it reverts to its natural state.

Bashir identified his blood type shortly after being released from solitary confinement in the episode "In Purgatory's Shadow".
