Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dr. Pulaski only joined the crew of the Enterprise-D for the second season. What had happened to Dr. Crusher?

Answer: She was acting as head of Starfleet Medical

Dr. Pulaski joined the crew in the year 2365 at the rank of commander. At the time that she took Dr. Crusher's position, there was no indication that Beverly would return, however she eventually did. Dr. Pulaski transferred off the ship shortly before Dr. Crusher returned, so the two were never on screen together.

Question by reedy
2. Captain Picard and Dr. Pulaski often butted heads during her tenure aboard ship. It began the moment she arrived when, instead of reporting in to the Captain, she first went to the ship's lounge, located at?

Answer: Deck 10, Forward.

Despite their professional conflicts, Dr. Pulaski did have a deep respect for Captain Picard; she had jumped at the opportunity to serve on the Enterprise for that, among other, reasons. Although unrelated to the respect issue, it should also be noted that Dr. Pulaski saved Captain Picard's life on the operating table, when complications arose during a surgery being done at Starbase 515.

Question by reedy
3. What was the reason why Dr. Pulaski did not meet Captain Picard on arrival?

Answer: Counselor Troi was pregnant

On arrival in Ten Forward, Picard started to berate her for not following the appropriate protocol. However, this matter was forgotten when Deanna revealed the unusual circumstances surrounding her pregnancy.

Question by Daddy19
4. What happened to Dr Pulaski following her visit to the Darwin Genetic Research Station?

Answer: She started to age rapidly

All the answers have been used as plot lines at some point in the "Star Trek" universe. Kes got younger in "Voyager", La Forge started to change into a different species and various characters have ended up in prison or in the brig.

In the episode "Unnatural selection", the Enterprise was investigating why the crew of USS Lantree all unexpectedly died of old age. By retracing the route to the Darwin Genetic Research Station, they found both the cause of the problem and, just in the nick of time, a solution.

Question by Daddy19.
5. Dr. Pulaski, despite being a 24th century doctor, had a healthy mistrust of technology. Like her forbear Dr. McCoy, she did not like to use the transporter, for example. This mistrust of technology also extended to Lieutenant Commander Data.

Answer: True

It took the bulk of the season for Dr. Pulaski to extend that measure of respect for Data as a true individual, and not simply an automaton spewing back programming. Her disdain was evident from the beginning when she could not understand that 'Data' was a name, and not an error in pronunciation.

Question by reedy
6. Prior to joining the crew of the Enterprise-D, Doctor Pulaski was stationed aboard USS Repulse.

Answer: True

Whenever an officer transfers to a new ship, their existing commanding officer always makes a comment as to how invaluable they are and how much they'll miss them.

The USS Repulse's commanding officer, Captain Taggert, was no different, indicating that he would have provided Pulaski with a shuttlecraft if she had agreed to stay aboard.

Question by Daddy19
7. Which Klingon tradition did Worf and Pulaski share together?

Answer: The Klingon Tea Ceremony

The Bat'leth tournament on Forcas III is mentioned in the episode "Parallels". The Gik'Tal Challenge was made up by Worf to encourage Ensign Sito to stand up to Captain Picard in "Lower Decks". The Day of Honor was a Klingon holiday appearing in the episode of the same name in "Voyager".

The memory-alpha.org website notes that in the Klingon Tea Ceremony, the tea in question was made from a poisonous plant. It would have been fatal for Dr. Pulaski had she not taken the antidote beforehand.

Question by Daddy19
8. We find out in an episode of "Star Trek: TNG" Pulaski had been involved in a romance many years ago with Kyle Riker, father of Will Riker. In which episode do we find out this information about Pulaski and Kyle Riker, after he came on board the Enterprise?

Answer: The Icarus Factor

Kyle Riker came on the Enterprise to brief his son, who had been offered command of the USS Aries, on the starship and its recent mission to investigate a potential new intelligent alien species. Kyle was the civilian advisor/strategic attaché. Of course we know Will chose to remain on the Enterprise as first officer to Captain Picard. In fact over the years Will turns down a few such offers, until he finally accepts command of the USS Titan in 2379 as we find out in "Star Trek: Nemesis." Counselor Deanna Troi, his new bride on "Star Trek: Nemesis," will be joining him.

Kyle Riker and Will Riker had been estranged for many years and it was in this episode they finally worked some things out, starting with a anbo-jyutsu father/son competition. Anbo-jyutsu was a form of martial arts seen on "TNG."

Though Dr. Pulaski had fallen in love with Kyle Riker twelve years before the events in this episode after he fought hard to survive after being severely injured in a Tholian attack on a starbase

Katherine Pulaski had met Kyle Riker after he was severely injured after Tholians attacked a starbase leaving him the sole survivor. They fell in love but never married and no specific details as to the reason were given. Pulaski only told Will that she would have married Kyle "in a cold minute" but he "had other priorities."

Question by christi_dove
9. Dr. Katherine Pulaski was a very accomplished medical doctor and her published research held in high regard by the medical profession. Which of the choices below was NOT one of her accomplishments?

Answer: A technique to repair a damaged vestibulocochlear (auditory) nerve to reverse deafness in many patients, including the famous deaf mediator Riva.

I made up the technique to repair the auditory nerve to reverse deafness. Though Riva was a very successful deaf mediator in the episode "Loud as a Whisper," who communicated by use of a human "Chorus" of three telepaths. Sadly his Chorus was killed in this episode by those who did not want peace. Pulaski never offered such a surgery to him.

Pulaski offered the medical procedure Geordi, to either regenerate his optic nerve and create normal eyes, or to give him optical implant devices. At this time, Geordi turned down the procedures because of certain drawbacks to the procedures and risks involved. Though it is important to note eventually La Forge did get ocular implants by 2373 as we see in "Star Trek: First Contact."

We learn about her influential medical publication ""Linear Models of Viral Propagation," in the episode "Unnatural Selection" when one of the doctors on Darwin Station recognized her name and praised her work.

Pulaski saved Picard's life when there was complications during a routine cardiac implant replacement on Starbase 515. Because of concerns appearing vulnerable to his crew , Picard originally didn't want Pulaski to do the operation so he traveled to a starbase to have it done but because of complications, Pulaski was called in anyways as the expert ("Samaritan Snare"). We found out more about the circumstances surrounding the reason Picard needed an artificial heart in the episode "Tapestry."

10. In the beginning of Season 2 of "TNG" Pulaski was portrayed as being rather gruff and a bit harsh and especially cold towards a certain crew member (see question 5). Would it be true to say throughout Season 2 this remained the same and she never really tried or succeeded in becoming part of the camaraderie of the crew but only interacted on a purely professional level?

Answer: No

This is not true because she was shown being supportive of other crew members and also joining in on their recreational activities. Here are just a few examples. Pulaski took part in the Klingon tea ceremony ("Up the Long Ladder) and was present as a show of support at the Klingon Second Rite of Ascension though she found the idea of Worf being subjected to Klingon painstiks barbaric ("The Icarus Factor").

Though at first concerned Wesley was not yet ready to lead and be in charge of a planetary survey, she was very encouraging to him when he was nervous about taking charge ("Pen Pals"). And in that same episode she supported Data when he wished to save the life of his young alien friend and the inhabitants of the planet when it was being destroyed by a geological catastrophe. This would be against the Prime Directive. Her respect for Data grew throughout the season despite her initial cold harshness towards him because of him being the product of technology. Pulaski was also shown taking part in the bridge crew's regular poker game in the episode "Measure of a Man."
