Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Captain Janeway has served as a mentor and role model for many on USS Voyager. Of the following members of her crew, who did she not take under her wing?

Answer: Seska

Seska was actually an undercover Cardassian agent physically altered to look Bajoran so she could join the Maquis and gather intelligence. Her true identity was revealed in the first season and she never was close to the captain.

Seven of Nine was of course the former Borg drone and Captain Janeway took her on as part of her crew and helped guide her on the difficult journey to rediscover her humanity-with help from The Doctor of course! The Doctor also served as her mentor. Captain Janeway was the only one who was able to get through to Seven when she became delusional as a result of her trying to assimilate too much data using a cortical processing subunit.

Janeway took a chance on Tom Paris who had been serving time in at the Federation Penal Settlement in New Zealand. After getting a dishonorable discharge from Starfleet he had joined the Maquis before he was captured and then sent to the penal settlement. Janeway wanted him to help her on a mission to the Badlands to find a Maquis ship Tuvok was undercover on. For his service to her and the ship during the events of "Caretaker," Janeway gave him a field commission of lieutenant and made him Voyager's helmsman. Throughout the series she continued to be a role model for him, and due in part to the faith she showed in him he became a dedicated officer though at times this was a rocky path for him.

B'Elanna Torres was part of the Maquis and though off to a shaky start due to her violent temper, Janeway took a chance on her being the Chief Engineer. Chakotay highly recommended her to Janeway for this position and at first Janeway was very skeptical until B'Elanna proved what a brilliant engineer she was. She soon excelled in this role and also viewed Janeway as a role model because she had confidence and faith in her, even when she didn't have it in herself.

Question by christi_dove
2. As a child, Janeway learned an artistic skill that she demonstrated for her crew on Talent Night (unseen) in the episode "Coda". What was it?

Answer: Ballet

At the age of six Janeway learned the dance of the "Dying Swan" in a beginning ballet class. This was the dance that she did at Voyager's Talent Night. There is no indication in "Star Trek" canon that her ballet 'career' extended beyond that time.

Question by reedy
3. For Picard, it was Earl Grey Tea, for Sisko it was Raktajino. What was Janeway's preferred drink?

Answer: Black coffee

Janeway was frequently seen ordering "Coffee, black" from replicators. In the episode "Hunters", she declared "Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised... I beat the Borg with it."

4. I think most will agree that characters in TV shows, movies, and even literature are most interesting when they are multifaceted and not one dimensional. Kathryn Janeway certainly had her darker side and at times in "Voyager" exhibited either manic tendencies or grim determination. Which below was NOT one the ways Captain Kathryn Janeway demonstrated her darker side?

Answer: While in The Void region of space she allowed her crew to plunder a weaker vessel for desperately needed parts and supplies.

The reason the choice about The Void in space is not one of the times Janeway shows her darker side, is because this was one of the times she was highly moral and determined not deviate from the Starfleet way and in no way was Voyager going to, like other ships who survived in The Void, attack or plunder other ships for supplies. Instead she focused on forming an alliance with other ships in which they protected each other and shared supplies. Those who broke the rules were ejected from the alliance. She also offered her ship as refuge for an alien race most other ships despised as vermin.

Janeway interrogated Noah Lessing to find out information about Captain Ransom of the Equinox and she nearly killed him by dropping the shields keeping out lifeforms who attacked humans. It was only due to Chakotay's intervention he survived ("Equinox II"). Chakotay's strong objections to Janeway's tactics and his statement he would not stand for them in the future got him relieved of duty.

The episode in which a transporter accident resulted in a new individual being created from Tuvok, Neelix, and an orchid was "Tuvix." This new individual called himself Tuvix and did not want to die in order for Tuvok and Neelix to be restored.

In the beginning of the episode "Night" we find out that Kathryn Janeway had locked herself away from the rest of the crew except for briefings from her first officer. She regretted some of her past decisions in regards to Voyager and felt responsible for them being stranded in the Delta Quadrant. These thoughts and the very dead region of space they had been in for a long time caused her to feel depressed.

Question by christi_dove
5. Kathryn Janeway grew up in Bloomington, Indiana where she enjoyed spending time ________________ . What words go in the blank?

Answer: on her grandfather's farm

Yes, she loved her grandfather's farm where she liked to climb trees. She did not enjoy camping though, and horse competitions were never mentioned in any episodes. Kathryn only had one sister and no brothers.

Apparently the year of her birth is not mentioned in any episodes just that she was born on May 20th, though there are several theories as to when she was born.

In the episode "Resolutions," Janeway and Chakotay were left behind on a planet due to a contagious disease they had contracted and she shared more about herself. Growing up she much preferred reading and studying rather than camping and gardening. Kathryn may not have liked it but since she grew up on a farm she did have to learn basic gardening skills which came in handy on the planet they were left on.

Question by christi_dove
6. On which starship did Kathryn Janeway first serve?

Answer: USS Al-Batani

We are told this information in the episodes "Caretaker" and "Shattered". At the time that Janeway served on the Al-Batani, the commanding officer was Tom Paris' father, Owen. After Voyager's disappearance, Admiral Owen Paris would be in charge of the Pathfinder project that would try and communicate with Janeway and her crew in the Delta Quadrant.

Question by Daddy19
7. Kathryn Janeway received her first command of a starship with her service aboard the USS Billings.

Answer: True

Janeway was given command of the Billings while still only at the rank of Commander. Tuvok also served briefly on the Billings while Janeway had command. It was not, however, the first time that they had met. Janeway and Tuvok had an established friendship for nearly a decade from the time when Tuvok dressed Janeway down in front of three admirals for failing to observe proper tactical procedures. She had been angry about it at the time, but soon came to realize that Tuvok was correct.

Question by reedy
8. Kathryn was engaged to be married at the beginning of the series, but when the USS Voyager was reported as missing and her crew presumed dead, her fiancé met and married another woman. What was the fiancé's name?

Answer: Mark Johnson

All of the men listed were romantic interests for Kathryn in the course of time during the series. After learning that her intended had moved on and married another, Kathryn eventually felt free to pursue other relationships. Until that news came through the Hirogen relay network (season four episode "Hunters"), she had held onto the hope of their reunion as one of the emotional supports she relied on to keep going.

Question by reedy
9. In which episode(s) does Captain Janeway find herself working at a power plant with no memory of her life aboard Voyager?

Answer: Workforce parts 1 and 2

In "Real Life", the Doctor creates a holographic family. In "Displaced", Voyager's crew starts to disappear one by one as an alien race starts to appear on the ship and the episode "In The Flesh" sees Species 8472 recreating Earth in a training simulation.

In "Workforce", Voyager hit a cloaked mine so Janeway turned command over to the Doctor and abandoned ship. She found herself on the planet Quarra looking for work, having had her memory altered by Doctor Kadan.

Question by Daddy19
10. In her years in the Delta Quadrant, Captain Janeway demonstrated on a number of occasions her ability to make difficult decisions. One such example came when she made an alliance against Species 8472 with what enemy?

Answer: The Borg

The ability to find the balance between maintaining Starfleet standards and making compromises for survival all alone in the Delta Quadrant was a defining part of Janeway's role. By the time they returned to the Alpha Quadrant, Janeway had managed to "write the book" on how to deal with the Borg.

Question by reedy
11. In the episode "Dark Frontier", Kathryn Janeway told Naomi Wildman there were three things she should remember about being a captain. Which was not one of them?

Answer: Observe the prime directive

Voyager was trying to infiltrate a Borg sphere, however whilst they were trying to do so, the Borg contacted Seven secretly and told her that they were aware of the plan and would spare Voyager if she rejoined the collective.

After the mission, Janeway tried to understand why Seven had stayed behind and found out about the Borg's communication. This led her to say to Naomi:

"There are three things to remember about being a starship captain: keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship, and never abandon a member of your crew."

Question by Daddy19. Quote reproduced from memory-alpha.org
12. Captain Janeway was assimilated by the Borg.

Answer: True

The two-part episode "Unimatrix Zero" straddled the sixth and seventh seasons of "Voyager". The season cliffhanger left Tuvok, Torres and Janeway captured by the Borg and assimilated. But it was all according to plan, as the Doctor had pre-administered an "anti-assimilation" inoculation prior to their away mission. After it was all said and done, the Doctor was able to remove the Borg implants, and restore the trio to full and proper humanity.

Question by reedy
13. It was a long way back to the Alpha Quadrant and on rare occasions Kathryn Janeway would take a break to participate in some of her favorite activities. Which below has never been shown or discussed in an episode to be one of her favorite activities or personal interests?

Answer: Playing the violin

A couple times we see Janeway participating in a Gothic holonovel (in the style of "Jane Eyre")where she plays the part of a governess ("Cathexis", "Eye of the Needle"). She would also spend time in a Leonardo da Vinci holoprogram where she took on the role of an apprentice in his workshop ("Scorpion 1", "Concerning Flight") which is where she showed Seven of Nine her clay sculpture and tried to instruct her on sculpting ("The Raven").

The captain has never been shown playing the violin. In the episode "Remember," Janeway tells Jor Brel, one of the Enaran telepaths, she regretted never learning how to play a musical instrument. And somehow through a telepathic connection Jol Brel was able to share some of his ability so she could play one of their instruments. Janeway was not expecting this and found it quite unsettling though she appreciated his gesture.

Question by christi_dove
14. Whose assistance does Vice-Admiral Janeway need at the start of Voyager's final episode in order to travel back in time to her younger self?

Answer: Miral Paris

Janeway was trying to acquire a device from Korath. To do this, she enlists the daughter of Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres, Miral.

As Captain of the USS Rhode Island, Harry Kim initially tries to stop her from travelling back in time, however he ultimately decides to help her by installing Korath's device aboard her shuttlecraft.

Question by Daddy19
15. Kathryn Janeway was a person who lived by a code of personal and professional ethics, influenced strongly by her career in Starfleet. Which of the following was NOT one of the ways on "Star Trek: Voyager" she demonstrated her code of ethics?

Answer: Developing and implementing a training program for a few former Maquis crew members who were not adjusting well to life on a Federation starship

Actually it was Tuvok, under orders from Janeway, developed and implemented a special training program for former Maquis crew members who were having a hard adjusting to working on board a Starfleet vessel ("Learning Curve"). It was hard for some of them to follow protocol and to conduct themselves appropriately.

Captain Janeway was sensitive to the fact most of the Maquis crew members never attended Starfleet Academy and never had the training the regular crew had so she wanted Tuvok who had been an instructor at Starfleet Academy for many years, to give them a crash course.

The Maquis crew members chosen for this instruction were very resistant to the idea and to the strict regimen and would not cooperate until Chakotay got physical and hit Dalby (one of the main troublemakers), knocking him down. This was done as an example of the Maquis way and Chakotay said if needed he can do it this way until they agreed to cooperate with Tuvok. The shock did the trick and the former Maquis crew members participated in Tuvok's training.

Janeway had Voyager destroy the Caretaker's array to protect the Ocampa from the Kazon in the pilot episode "Caretaker." "Counterpoint" was the episode where Captain Janeway gives telepathic aliens refuge on her ship and hides them from the Devore who had outlawed telepaths. The ship was frequently inspected so a method to conceal the telepaths, including the telepaths in her crew, using transporter suspension was used. And finally, Janeway took on board juvenile Borg children who had been rejected by the Borg in the episode "Collective."
