Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Francis "Frank" Underwood
Answer: U.S. Congressman, Majority Whip
When we met Francis Underwood -- Frank to almost everyone save his wife -- he was a long-standing Congressman from South Carolina and the Majority Whip of the House. He was not pleased to be passed over for a Cabinet position when the new President took office. Underwood was played by actor Kevin Spacey, who won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Television Series Drama (2015) for his portrayal of the ambitious politician.
2. Claire Underwood
Answer: CEO, Clean Water Initiative
Claire Underwood was Frank Underwood's wife; together, Claire and Frank made for a shockingly strong power couple. In the first season, Claire was the CEO of a clean water nonprofit organization. Each night, the couple would share one single cigarette and plot their next moves. Claire was as cool as a cucumber no matter the situation. Claire was played by Robin Wright and for her efforts earned a Golden Globe in 2013 for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama.
3. Zoe Barnes
Answer: Reporter, "Washington Herald"
Washington Herald reporter Zoe Barnes and Frank Underwood had an illicit arrangement in which he would leak private information about his political rivals to her and she would publish exclusive reports, thereby furthering both of their ambitious. Zoe was one of the least narcissistic players in "House of Cards" during its first season, but her machinations with Frank did not end up serving her in the long run. Zoe was played by Kate Mara, her earned Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of Zoe.
4. Peter Russo
Answer: U.S. Congressman, representing Pennsylvania
When we met Peter Russo, he was a Congressman from Pennsylvania. Russo was a troubled man easily manipulated by Underwood and, like so many others, served as an example of why one should avoid working with Underwood at all costs. Russo was played by Corey Stoll, who as been active in film, on tv, and on the stage, playing such varied roles as Ernest Hemingway, an L.A. homicide detective, and Brutus in "Julius Caesar."
5. Doug Stamper
Answer: Chief of Staff to the Majority Whip
Doug Stamper was Frank Underwood's Chief of Staff and an effective example of the shadowy figures who manipulate policy and politics in Washington, D.C. that can affect the entire world. He would do and has done anything for the benefit of Underwood. Stamper was portrayed by American actor Michael Kelly, who has been seen on film and on TV. On the latter, he's played roles in all three of the New York-based "Law and Order" shows, as well recurring roles on "The Sopranos," "Person of Interest," and "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior."
6. Garrett Walker
Answer: President, United States
When we met Garrett Walker, he was President of the United States. But it was a position Frank Underwood had his eye on, so Walker's tenure wasn't going to last long. Walker was not as politically savvy or as underhanded as his colleagues in D.C., which was to be his downfall. Walked was played by Michael Gill, who can also be seen in such shows as "Mr. Robot" (2015-2016) and "Person of Interest" (2014).
7. Remy Danton
Answer: Lobbyist for natural gas company
Remy Danton goes way back with Frank Underwood, but when the show opened, he was a lobbyist in the natural gas industry, representing a large firm called SanCorp. He was previously Underwood's Press Secretary and Chief of Staff. Remy was played by Mahershala Ali, an Oakland-born actor who studied at the Tisch School of the Arts.
In addition to being a musician, Ali has acted in "The Hunger Games" and HBO's "Treme."
8. Raymond Tusk
Answer: Billionaire invested in nuclear power
Another very powerful person in "House of Cards" is Raymond Tusk, a billionaire in the energy field and owner of multiple nuclear power plants. Tusk was arguably as selfish and stubborn as Underwood. Tusk was played by the Mississippi-born actor Gerald McRaney, who has had a storied career yet is probably most known for his lead role in "Major Dad" (CBS, 1989-1993), one of the Simons on "Simon & Simon" (CBS, 1981-1989), and, more recently, in "This is Us" (NBC) as a doctor who has come out of retirement to delivery triplets.
9. Freddy Hayes
Answer: Owner, BBQ restaurant
Freddy Hayes, the owner of a BBQ restaurant, may be the only character who does not qualify as a narcissist in this quiz. When we met him, he owned a small restaurant that served amazingly good ribs and was one of the places Underwood liked to go to enjoy a meal in peace.
The men got to know each other over Freddy's food. It was downhill from there, though. The actor who portrayed Freddy, Reg E. Cathey, won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (2015) for his portrayal of one of the few men on the show with a moral center.
10. Edward Meechum
Answer: Bodyguard
Edward Meechum was assigned as the Underwood's temporary bodyguard when their original one became ill. Meechum was briefly fired, and, when Frank helped him get his job back, he was indebted to Frank and, in Frank's eyes, ever more loyal because of it. Meechum was played by Nathan Darrow was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and can also be seen in "Billions" on Showtime.
