Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our hero was the younger son of a Saxon king when a crew of marauders raided his home, Bebbanburg. Who were these fierce invaders?

Answer: Danes, aka Vikings

"The Last Kingdom" opened when a fleet of Viking warriors landed at Bebbanburg and pillaged and plundered the small Saxon kingdom. Uhtred was only eleven when he saw his father's murder at the hands of a Danish earl, Ragnar Ragnarson.

Uhtred, the younger son, inherited Bebbanburg on the death of his father but was taken into Earl Ragnar's household as a servant.
2. When Uhtred was living with the Ragnarason family, he saved the youngest Ragnar, little Twyla, from an attack by a shameless teenager, Sven Kjartansson. Of the following, what was the significant repercussion of the fight between Uhtred and Sven?

Answer: Blood feud between the Ragnar and Kjartan families

The incident in that woods that only lasted a few moments resulted in a lifelong blood feud between Ragnar and Kjartan and their sons. Kjartan had been Ragnar's shipbuilder, an essential man in Ragnar's crew, but Ragnar blinded Sven in one eye and then banned the entire family from his lands forever for attacking his young daughter.

Uhtred's bravery in fighting the stronger and older Sven elevated Ragnar's view of his young ward, and soon after, he decided to adopt Uhtred as a son. This cemented Uhtred's status as both a Saxon and a Dane at the same time.
3. With Uhtred living with Ragnar, someone took over Bebbanburg, which was Uhtred's birthright as the eldest surviving son. Who was this ambitious person?

Answer: His uncle Aelfric

When Uhtred's father fell in battle to the Danes, his younger brother Aelfric wanted his title, though young Uhtred was the rightful holder. Aelfric wanted young Uhtred to die in battle as well, but because Ragnar took Uhtred as his own, the uncle's plan was foiled.

Ragnar foiled the uncle's plans again when he refused to ransom Uhtred back to his uncle, who would have had the young boy killed. Ragnar sensed this and it was another reason that he adopted Uhtred as his own.
4. When Uhtred was a teenager, what happened to his adopted Danish family while he and his girlfriend Brida were watching the charcoal on the hill above the household?

Answer: His adopted family was killed

The night before Twyla's wedding was a fateful one. Ragnar gave Uhtred permission to court Brida, and they were in the woods together when Kjartan's and Aelfric's men locked the Ragnar family inside their home and set fire to it. Ragnar's wife and father chose to be mercy-killed by Ragnar and sent to Vallhalla, while Ragnar fought through the flames to his death. Uhtred once again watched a beloved father die. Twyla was secretly kidnapped by Sven.

Young Ragnar, Ragnar's eldest son and Uhtred's adopted brother, was away for this vicious attack, which is why he escaped death. But he and Uhtred swore to avenge their father together one day.
5. After Brida and Uhtred had lost two homes and two families, they decided to go where?

Answer: Wessex

Without families or kinsmen, Brida and Uhtred were on their own. When he was a boy, Uhtred had heard from his father's priest, Beocca, that Uhtred could always find him at Wessex. Wessex was at that point the only kingdom within England that hadn't fallen to the Danes.

Uhtred and Bride headed toward Wessex. On this trip, Uhtred had his sword made. He included symbols of both his Saxon and his Danish heritage in its formation.
6. Alfred had recently become King of Wessex. What kind of man is Alfred?

Answer: All of these apply to Alfred

King Alfred was a complex and thoughtful man. Never meaning to be king, he took the throne when his brother died in battle and passed the title to Alfred rather than his own son. King Alfred was intelligent and consistently sought peace over bloodshed, but he was not afraid to go to battle when negotiation failed. He was not a physically large nor strong man, and he suffered from stomach pains, but he was extremely well-educated, cautious, and pious, except when it came to fidelity to his Queen.

Father Beocca had pledged himself to Alfred and Beocca told the King he could trust Uhtred, but Alfred was skeptical of this mixed Dane and Saxon. Brida has no interest in living as a Saxon and ultimately leaves Uhtred to find Young Ragnar.
7. In an act of loyalty to Alfred and an act of betrayal to Danes, Uhtred set fire to a Danish fleet. This put him in a dangerous confrontation with a very powerful Dane. Who was this man, the closest the Danes had to a king?

Answer: Ubba

Ubba was the fiercest, most powerful Dane on English lands. The character of Ubba is based on a real 9th-century Viking chieftain who invaded England.

In "The Last Kingdom", Ubba was portrayed as one of the most powerful warriors but, contrasted to Saxon king Alfred, not as forward-thinking or logical. Ubba had a quick temper and a big ego, but was still one of the most respected Danes and was present at all important negotiations. He died at the hands of Uhtred, who got the better of him in a fight. Uhtred didn't necessarily want to fight Ubba -- in fact, his adopted Danish grandfather warned him never to fight the fierce older warrior -- but Ubba insisted. Uhtred made sure Ubba had his sword in hand when he died, allowing him to get into Valhalla.
8. At one point, Uhtred wanted to stay in Alfred's good graces and become a Saxon Ealderman, with the goal of gaining more wealth and eventually men to take back Bebbanburg. What did he do to move toward this goal, at Alfred's suggestion?

Answer: Married Lady Mildrith

Uhtred wanted to prove his loyalty to King Alfred, but Alfred wouldn't trust him entirely, because Uhtred refused to kneel to the king or commit to a Christian God. In an attempt to become a respectable member of Alfred's kingdom, Uhtred married the young Saxon Lady Mildrith and moved to her lands. Uhtred found her kind and gentle, and love bloomed. She bore him a child, son of Uhtred.
9. Uhtred's attempt to be a tamed Saxon lord did not hold, and he eventually gathered a band of rag-tag men and tried to plunder silver from other villages. He met Iseult, a pagan queen, who had the gift of clairvoyance as well as other talents. What important act did she seem to perform in the Somerset marshlands?

Answer: She helped Alfred's son recover from an illness

The multi-talented Iseult saw that Edmund, King Alfred's only son, was ill and only getting worse despite the prayers and ministrations of the King's men. Against the wishes of Alfred's wife, Iseult takes the infant for a night, and in the morning he is healed. This secured Alfred's legacy in Wessex and in England.
10. In a definitive battle between Danes and Saxons, Uhtred fought on the side of the Saxons. What was NOT a result of this battle?

Answer: The king's nephew Aethelwold was killed

The decisive battle at the end of season 1 brought out several results and underscored Alfred's strength as a leader in battle. The Danes fell when Saxon men across the kingdoms on the island came to fight for Alfred and for England. The chieftain Guthrum, who had shown interest in Christianity, was baptized by Alfred's priests. Uhtred lost his Iseult, but not before she told him that his Danish sister, Twyla, was still alive.

After the battle, Uhtred is poised once again to gather what he needs to avenge the death of Ragnar and to take back Bebbanburg from his uncle.
