Sophia said this to her daughter, Dorothy, after the latter expressed anger and envy at the fact that her mother had met Burt Reynolds and a number of other famous individuals. Earlier in the episode, Blanche had won tickets to a private party held by Burt Reynolds, but she only had three tickets, so Sophia was left out. However, Dorothy, Blanche and Rose then went on to be mistakenly arrested for prostitution. Therefore when Sophia arrived at the prison to bail them out, she asked which one of them was going to forfeit their ticket so that she herself could go in their place. Despite Sophia's kindness, the other three refused to allow her to take one of their tickets, prompting Sophia to steal them and go to the party alone, leaving the three women in jail.

However, Rose was against the idea, which is when she came up with the above quotation. Convinced that her friend was sleeping with her ex-husband, Dorothy went over to his house to confront Blanche. These words were said by Rose, as she told the rest of the girls about a mean man from her home town of St. Olaf, named Ernest T. Minky. She came up with this story after Dorothy remarked that the local children had dressed up as their own mean neighbour, Frieda Claxton, the previous Halloween.

Sophia made this remark as Rose told one of her stories. Despite Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia's attempts to escape another detailed account of life in St. Olaf, Rose followed them into the kitchen. In her usual elaborate manner she recounted the events of the day to the other girls, before revealing that, moments before crossing the finishing line, she walked into a wall. Blanche said these words the first time she met Frank, a man Dorothy had been working with on a youth project. The reason for her surprise was due to the fact that Frank had turned up to dinner with the girls, dressed in cleric's clothing. Blanche's surprise was further justified by the fact that Dorothy was clearly attracted to him, but had never mentioned the fact that he was a priest. However, as Frank soon explained, Dorothy herself was not aware of this fact, as he had never revealed it to her.
