Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pepe Le Pew, the most romantic skunk in a cartoon series, first appeared on January 6, 1945 in an episode entitled "Odor-able Kitty". What was Pepe's original name in this series premiere?

Answer: Stinky

In this first episode, Pepe Le Pew a.k.a. Stinky focused his attention on a MALE cat who had disguised himself as a skunk because he was bored. Let's just say he wasn't bored for long once Pepe caught sight of him.
2. Pepe Le Pew's French accent, combined with a creative English and French dialect, made him seem especially dashing. Who provided the voice for Pepe?

Answer: Mel Blanc

Mel Blanc did a superb job with the bilingual dialect. The writer responsible for this Franglish mixture was Michael Maltese. Here is an example of something Pepe would say: "Ah, ma cherie! You are very shy, n'est-ce pas? But it is love as first sight, non?"
3. What is the name of the female cat who reversed the tables on Pepe Le Pew by disguising his odoriferous smell with perfume, then proceeded to smother him with more love than even he could imagine?

Answer: Penelope Pussycat

She later appeared in several episodes as Pepe's girlfriend. In this 1949 episode entitled "For Sent-imental Reasons", Pepe is the one who is accidentally painted and gets mistaken for a cat. This role reversal is memorable because Penelope Pussycat is even more aggressive than Pepe; and he certainly isn't used to being pursued. He looks like he's a little scared of her.
4. Pepe Le Pew likes to stroll in this French city in the springtime, when he's in the mood for love. What is the name of the city?

Answer: Paris

Poor Pepe! I think he's in love with the idea of being in love and has no idea how to proceed.
5. For which episode did Pepe Le Pew win an Academy Award for the Warner Brothers' Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons?

Answer: "For Sent-imental Reasons"

"For Sent-imental Reasons" was written by Michael Maltese and produced by Chuck Jones. The Academy Award was for the Best Short Subject (Cartoons) Category.
6. Several of the older 'Looney Tunes' characters are being revived for the enjoyment of a new generation. Why is Pepe Le Pew not being as actively promoted as some of the other characters?

Answer: Pepe would not be a good role model for young children. He is too persistent in the face of his lady's resistance.

Pepe can still be seen on TV, but not as much as other 'Looney Tunes' characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the Roadrunner. Pepe never gives up his pursuit, even when the character being pursued looks terribly frightened. This makes him a rather poor role model for today's young children.
7. Pepe Le Pew loves to sing and is often heard singing or humming this French tune about plucking the feathers off a skylark. What is the name of that tune?

Answer: "Alouette"

"Alouette" is a popular children's song in both France and Canada meant for group singing. "I'm in the Mood for Love" is a song Pepe often sings, but it has nothing to do with plucking skylarks. "C'est l'Aviron" is a French Canadian canoe paddling song. Last but not least, Edith Piaf often sang "La Vie en Rose", which became the theme song and title of a movie about her life.

There is a recorded bilingual version of this song, which reminded me of Pepe.
8. Just as "CSI" starts every episode with a dead body, Pepe Le Pew's episodes begin with a black cat who accidentally doing what?

Answer: Gets a streak of white paint on her back.

Early on, there was even a dog who caught Pepe's interest when he accidentally got a streak of white paint on his back. Let's not panic, it's a cartoon!
9. There have been rumors that Pepe Le Pew's character may have been created to resemble which popular French actor?

Answer: Maurice Chevalier

You may remember Maurice Chevalier as the French actor who sang "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" from the movie "Gigi". There are some similarities between Pepe and Mr. Chevalier, but no one has ever admitted the rumors were true.
10. What symbols float around Pepe Le Pew's head to indicate he is in love?

Answer: Little red hearts

Several items featuring Pepe Le Pew are usually available for Valentine's Day; and where there's a Pepe, there are little red hearts.
