Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Salvador, Brazil in Leg 1, teams needed to do which of the following at the Elevador Lacerda?

Answer: Climb down a cargo net

In the first leg of the race, teams flew from Los Angeles, California to the city of Salvador, Brazil on the country's northeastern shores. After traveling through the city streets, the teams had an overnight stay before attempting their Detour task, a choice between a tame crawl up church steps or a descent down a cargo net hanging from the Elevador Lacerda. All teams except for Andrew and Dan completed the latter task.

After this, teams took a boat to the Pit Stop at Forte de São Marcelo and Anita and Arthur were eliminated.
2. The second leg of the race continued through Brazil. In Cumbuco, teams needed to ride which of the following?

Answer: Dune buggies

For the second leg of the race, teams took flights to the city of Fortaleza, Brazil. Upon their arrival, they needed to head to the beachside in Cumbuco to find a clue box sending them on dune buggy rides down the beach. Inevitably, teams had to complete a Detour task on the Atlantic Coast involving either a local boat known as a jaganda or a shipping warehouse in the Port of Pecem.

The leg ended in Fortaleza where Anthony and Stephanie were eliminated. In the following leg, teams had their last trip in South America when they flew to La Paz, Bolivia.
3. During the fourth leg of the race, teams completed a Road Block atop Mount Eden in which New Zealand city?

Answer: Auckland

In Leg 4, the teams flew over the Pacific Ocean from La Paz, Bolivia to Auckland, New Zealand. Here, the teams had the opportunity to climb the Sky Tower for one of only two Fast Forwards in the race (Ken and Tina ended up winning it and taking their third consecutive victory).

The rest of the teams met with Maori tribesmen atop Mount Eden for a Road Block task and then headed into the rural countryside outside Auckland for the Detour, a choice between a wine-themed challenge and a ride on a blokart.

The Pit Stop was at a farm in Tauranga; Phil's dad was the greeter.
4. In Leg 5, teams flew to Cambodia. What temple (depicted) was the site of the Road Block task?

Answer: Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, one of the most famous and picturesque temples in Southeast Asia, was a stop on the final seven teams' trip through Cambodia. On their way out of New Zealand, the teams needed to go to Siem Reap and continue into the countryside of this vibrant nation for a Detour task. Following this, teams were told to head to the temple complex of Angkor Wat to finish a Road Block.

Here, they needed to locate a chamber which, when entered, would create a distinct echo when they beat their chest. Following this, the teams raced on foot to the Pit Stop at the nearby Bayon.
5. The Pit Stop in Leg 6 was this temple in New Delhi, India, named after which of these religions?

Answer: Bahá'í

Flying to Delhi in Leg 6, teams arrived at night and needed to find an automotive mechanic in the city to complete their Road Block task. This involved painting energy-efficient tuk-tuks green before continuing on. After this, the six teams were either able to join in an Indian wedding celebration for their Detour or perform a very difficult task involving ironing clothes with charcoal irons.

After this, they checked in at the Pit Stop at the Bahá'í House, a beautiful structure in the city recognizing the Bahá'í faith.

This was the first non-elimination point; Ken and Tina were spared.
6. The Charity Hospital in New Delhi, India (in Leg 7) contained which of the following types of patients?

Answer: Birds

Leg 7 was held entirely in New Delhi and, for some, was the shortest leg (time-wise) in the history of the race. Some teams completed it in just over an hour. During this leg, teams departed from the Bahá'í House during the day and made their way to a colourful Holi festival before proceeding to the Charity Birds Hospital.

Here, Ken and Tina found a Speed Bump task asking them to serve holy water to Sikhs. The Detour involved either transporting chili peppers and grinding them up (which was a strain on the senses) or navigating a maze of power lines before checking in at the Pit Stop at Humayun's Tomb. Kelly and Christie were eliminated here, placing sixth.
7. In Leg 8, teams took a trip to Kok Tobe, a tower and park in the capital city of what Asian nation?

Answer: Kazakhstan

After finishing up in India, teams were told to fly to Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan, where they had to find the Alel' Agro Chicken Factory (for the Road Block). While the majority of teams continued with the leg, Terence and Sarah and Nick and Starr battled it out at the Alasha Restaurant for the second of only two Fast Forward clues; this meant they needed to eat korduk, a dish of sheep fat.

The latter won the clue. Also during this leg, many of the teams dressed as cows for the Detour, but not before encountering trained eagles at Kok Tobe.

At the Pit Stop at Almaty's Old Square, Terence and Sarah could not catch up and were eliminated while Andrew and Dan forgot their shoes at the start of the Detour and could not go back to claim them.
8. In Leg 9 in Russia, teams observed Eastern Orthodox customs at the Krutitsy Dormition Cathedral in what major city?

Answer: Moscow

Teams traveled northward to Moscow, Russia in Leg 9 beginning at the Krutitsy Cathedral by lighting candles. This leg proved expensive for most teams and frustrating for everyone else due to language barriers. For the Detour, teams taxied to a military camp in Tatarintsevo before donning a uniform and either marching or serving the troops.

Then, teams had to complete a back-breaking Road Block at the Zhukovsky Bakery before checking in at the non-elimination Pit Stop at Neskuchny Garden.
9. Continuing through Russia in Leg 10, teams visited the Fallen Monument Park for a Road Block. On their way to the next destination, which team lost their passports?

Answer: Toni and Dallas

Although they placed first in Leg 9, Toni and Dallas hit a major snag when Dallas needed to complete this Road Block riddle in Moscow in Leg 10. On the way from a pawn shop to the flat where Mikhail Bulgakov wrote "The Master and Margarita", he accidentally left his team's pouch containing their money and passports in his taxi. Since there was no way to retrieve them, they were stuck without being able to complete the leg; Phil eliminated them in the field before they could check in at the Pit Stop in VDNKh Park. Because they couldn't fly without their passports, they did not appear at the finish line in the following leg.
10. One of teams' final destinations in this race was the Bridge of the Gods in what American state?

Answer: Oregon

In the eleventh and final leg of the race, the final three teams flew from Moscow, Russia to Portland, Oregon where they needed to begin by completing a series of tasks in the beautiful Cascades Mountains (including ziplining off the Bridge of the Gods over the Columbia River). Back in Portland proper, teams raced on foot though the streets to find several downtown locations (including Voodoo Doughnut) before taking a taxi to the finish line outside the Pittock Mansion. Nick and Starr won this season of the race taking home the million dollar prize.

They won seven legs in total; this was a record in the American version until it was broken by Rachel and Dave in season 20.
