Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which American city did teams commence "The Amazing Race 13"?

Answer: Los Angeles

Eleven teams made their way to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum's field to begin a race around the world. Opening their clues, teams were instructed to drive through the city, then pick one of two flights to their next destination, Brazil, at LAX International Airport leaving that afternoon. With this in mind, six teams arrived earlier into their Brazilian locale than the five proceeding teams.

This was the fifth time that the race began in the Los Angeles area in the history of the show (and certainly not the last).
2. To which city in Brazil did teams travel in Leg 1 of the race?

Answer: Salvador

Once in Salvador, Brazil, teams were told to take a taxi through the city to find o Rei do Pernil Sandwich Shop where they could complete their next task. For this task, teams needed to deliver a cart of sales goods through the streets and up a funicular to a man waiting for them in the Praca da Se. Once teams wheeled their unwieldy cart to the proper man, they could continue on with the race by taking a taxi to a military base known as 19 Batalhao de Cacadores.

Here, they would need to sign in and take a departure time for the next morning.

They would spent the nights sleeping outside in bug nets.
3. Which team completed the 'Hard Way Up' Detour task of Leg 1?

Answer: Andrew and Dan

Departing from the military base in the morning, teams were told to take a taxi to Igreja da Ordem Terceira de Sao Francisco in Pelourinho where they would find their next clue. This turned out to be a Detour task, their first in the race. Only Andrew and Dan completed the 'Hard Way Up' Detour option in which they needed to climb a set of stairs at the Escadaria do Passo on their hands and knees. Once at the top, teams would need to answer a secret question pertaining to the number of steps climbed, but they would not know the question until they reached the top. Once they answered 'fifty-three' they would receive their next clue. If teams answered wrong, they'd need to take the streets nearby back to the bottom to try again.
4. How many teams completed the 'Soft Way Down' Detour task in Leg 1?

Answer: Ten

Since only Andrew and Dan completed 'Hard Way Up' in Leg 1, all of the remaining ten teams finished 'Soft Way Down' in which both members needed to find a marked elevator in the Elevador Lacerda in Salvador and harness themselves up at the top to climb down a cargo net back to the ground, a total of two hundred and forty feet. Once both members safely reached the ground they would receive their next clue leading them directly to the first Pit Stop. Only three teams could be on the cargo net at one time, so teams had to deal with a first-come-first-served basis.
5. Which team was the first to be eliminated from the race?

Answer: Anita and Arthur

After the Detour teams needed to head to the nearby waterfront and take a boat directly to their first Pit Stop, the Forte de Sao Marcelo built on an island in the water. Nick and Starr were quick to find a boat to take them directly there after the Detour and placed first in this first leg winning a trip for two to Belize courtesy of Travelocity.

Unfortunately, Anita and Arthur, the oldest couple on the race, were the first to be eliminated after falling behind before and after the Detour task.
6. Beginning Leg 2, teams were told to go to Fortaleza in what country?

Answer: Brazil

Although teams remained in Brazil for the second leg of the race, they were required to fly from the city of Salvador six hundred miles to Fortaleza, Brazil, further north along the Atlantic coast. Once there, teams needed to hop into a taxi to locate the village of Cumbuco and their clue box at the Praca Do Combuco.

Although there were ten teams, all of them managed to catch the same early flight to Fortleza Airport and were neck and neck throughout.
7. Which team completed the 'Docket' Detour task in Leg 2?

Answer: Mark and Bill

Arriving at Praca Do Combuco, teams made their way to the beach to hop into dune buggies which would drive them to their next clue box at the Barraca d Manoel in Cauipe. Once the shopkeeper handed them their next clue, they would need to pick a Detour task.

In 'Docket', teams needed to locate a local port and search through computer databases to find a significant seven digit number listed in their clue. They then needed to locate the particular shipping container in the shipyard outside to find their next clue. Only Mark and Bill finished this task.
8. What did teams need to transport in the 'Beach It' Detour task in Leg 2?

Answer: Boats

In 'Beach It', participating teams needed to head along the coast in their dune buggies and transport a four-hundred-forty pound sailboat from the ocean to an inlet one hundred yards away using nothing more than logs in a traditional local method. All of the teams except Mark and Bill completed this physical Detour option and continued onward.

After this task, teams were instructed to travel by taxi to Parque de Vaquejada for their next clue.
9. During the Road Block task in Leg 2, what did teams need to locate?

Answer: The name of their next Pit Stop

Teams reaching the clue box at the Parque de Vaquejada received their first Road Block task of the race. For this, the teams needed to choose one person who would be able to search the adjacent six hundred foot wall of advertisements for the one destination of their next Pit Stop. Teams were told not to over think the task by looking at the hundreds of ads surrounding their correct answer. Members completing this task were Tina, Sarah, Bill, Nick, Toni, Aja, Anthony, Christy, Andrew and Marisa.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 2?

Answer: Anthony and Stephanie

After the Road Block, teams were told to taxi through the city of Fortaleza to the next Pit Stop, the name of which they would find during their final task: Cidade Di Crianca. Although Mark and Bill were the first to leave the Road Block, Ken and Tina were the first to make it to the Pit Stop winning an off-road vehicle each.

In the end it was Anthony and Stephanie, who were plagued with bad taxi problems early on, who became the last team to arrive becoming the second team eliminated from the race.
