Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dr Gregory House

Answer: Infectious diseases

Infectious disease is the specialty related to the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic infections. Specialists will often act as consultants to other physicians treating patients with complex infection, and will manage patients with infections that compromise their immunity such as HIV.

Gregory House is the head of Princeton-Plainsboro's diagnostic department. He went to Johns Hopkins University, before attending the same institution's medical school, from which he was expelled for cheating, subsequently attending the University of Michigan Medical School. In addition to specialising in Infectious Diseases, he is also a specialist in Nephrology.

Gregory House was played by Hugh Laurie.
2. Dr Lisa Cuddy

Answer: Endocrinology

Endocrinology relates to the study of the endocrine system and conditions that affect it. Endocrinologists will be responsible for the treatment of such patients, often long-term, as endocrine conditions are usually chronic. These can include diabetes and hyperthyroidism.

Lisa Cuddy is the Dean of Medicine and Hospital Administrator at Princeton-Plainsboro. She attended the University of Michigan's Medical School, where she first met Gregory House. Following her appointment at Princeton-Plainsboro, she hired House to run the hospital's diagnostics department.

Lisa Cuddy was played by Lisa Edelstein
3. Dr James Wilson

Answer: Oncology

Oncology is the branch of medicine responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. It is subdivided into further specialties of Medical Oncology (treatment using medicines such as chemotherapy drugs and hormone therapy), Surgical Oncology (treatment through surgery) and Radiation Oncology (treatment using radiation).

James Wilson is the Head of Oncology at Princeton-Plainsboro. As an undergraduate he attended McGill University in Montreal, before attending medical school at Columbia University. He began working at Princeton-Plainsboro when Gregory House, who he first met at a medical conference in New Orleans, contacted him to let him know that the hospital had a position available for an oncologist.

James Wilson was played by Robert Sean Leonard.
4. Dr Eric Foreman

Answer: Neurology

Neurology is the specialty concerned with diseases and conditions of both the Central Nervous System (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS), which is the network of nerves and ganglia that connect the CNS to the body's organs and limbs.

Eric Foreman is one of the diagnostic department fellows at Princeton-Plainsboro. He attended Columbia University as an undergraduate before medical school at Johns Hopkins. As one of House's team of diagnosticians, Foreman's role is to provide diagnoses and suggest treatment options for the various patients that come under their care. Foreman was the third of this original team hired by House, just before the period of the first episode of the series.

Eric Foreman was played by Omar Epps.
5. Dr Allison Cameron

Answer: Immunology

Immunology is the study of immune systems in living organisms. Although immunology is a specialty of medicine in its own right, immunology specialists will often work alongside as part of other medical disciplines whereby immunity to disease or infection is important.

Allison Cameron is one of the diagnostic fellows at Princeton-Plainsboro under Gregory House. Unlike her colleagues Foreman and Chase, it is not known either where she completed undergraduate studies or went to medical school. Cameron was the second of the original team of three to be hired, starting approximately six months prior to the Pilot episode.

Allison Cameron was played by Jennifer Morrison.
6. Dr Robert Chase

Answer: General Surgery

General surgery is the branch of surgery that is concerned with the abdomen and its contents, as well as diseases concerning the skin, breast, soft tissue and trauma, as well as invasive procedures such as colonoscopy or gastroscopy.

Robert Chase is one of the diagnostic fellows at Princeton-Plainsboro. As an Australian, he undertook pre-medical training at the University of Sydney rather than at a medical school in the United States, before undertaking specialties in intensive care and cardiology, and a neurosurgery rotation at Melbourne Hospital. Chase is the longest serving of the original team of diagnostic fellows under House, and, as a surgeon, is the one called upon to undertake any surgical or invasive treatments that patients require.

Robert Chase was played by Jesse Spencer.
7. Dr Chris Taub

Answer: Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is a subspecialty of surgery concerning the reconstructing, restoring or altering of the body by surgical means, and is further divided into reconstructive surgery, which is aimed at the repair of a part of the body to restore or improve its function, and cosmetic surgery, intended to change or improve its appearance.

Chris Taub is a member of the second team of diagnostic fellows hired by House at Princeton-Plainsboro. Likely to have attended Johns Hopkins Medical School, he became a board certified plastic surgeon with a successful independent practice, interspersed with a period leading a team of surgeons correcting cleft palates in Bangladesh. He became one of House's diagnostic fellows following what he described as "The Games", where House whittled a large number of applicants down to three. Taub was applicant #39.

Chris Taub was played by Peter Jacobson.
8. Dr Remy Hadley

Answer: Internal Medicine

Internal medicine is the branch of medicine that relates to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases in adults. As opposed to other specialists, internists deal with patients that have unspecified or multi-system conditions, and will usually be employed directly in hospitals.

Remy Hadley is one of the second team of diagnostic fellows at Princeton-Plainsboro. She undertook her pre-med studies at Sarah Lawrence College before medical school - this may have been in Miami, as she undertook an ER rotation there. She became one of House's fellows following "The Games", where she was applicant #13, a sobriquet she went by for a considerable time owing to her secretive nature.

Remy Hadley was played by Olivia Wilde.
9. Dr Lawrence Kutner

Answer: Sports Medicine

Sports medicine is a specialty dealing exclusively with the treatment of injuries related to sport and exercise, as well as maintaining physical fitness. Sports medicine specialists will often be musculoskeletal experts, as the majority of their work is related to muscle, ligament, tendon and bone problems.

Lawrence Kutner is a member of the second diagnostic team at Princeton-Plainsboro under House. He initially attended the University of California at Berkeley where he obtained a degree in physics, before undertaking pre-med at Dartmouth College, and then medical school at the University of Tel Aviv. Kutner was hired as part of House's team following "The Games", where he was applicant #6. Although initially fired, he refused to accept this decision and turned his #6 to a #9 and carried on working.

Lawrence Kutner was played by Kal Penn.
10. Dr Amber Volakis

Answer: Radiology

Radiology is the medical discipline that sees the use of imaging techniques to both diagnose and treat disease. Such techniques can include x-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging or nuclear medicine. The radiologist is trained to interpret the images produced and then communicate the findings to other medical specialists.

Amber Volakis is one of the candidates for House's new diagnostic team at Princeton-Plainsboro. She attended medical school at Washington University in St Louis. As candidate #24 in "The Games", she is one of the final contenders for one of the three positions, before House elects to eliminate her at the last hurdle.

Amber Volakis was played by Anne Dudek.
