Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In season one we were introduced to a variety of interesting characters, and in season two their back stories unfolded continuously. Who was the Chief of Staff to President Fitzgerald Grant?

Answer: Cyrus Beene

Jeff Perry played the right hand of the newly elected Fitz, played by Tony Goldwyn. We found out throughout seasons one and two the lengths Cyrus went to in order to ensure Fitz would be elected. Fitz, a Republican, was married to Mellie and had two children Jerry and Karen (unseen through seasons one and two) when elected, and a third child, Teddy, conceived in the White House and 'for America'.

I am in my forties while writing this quiz, so in some ways, Tony Goldwyn will always be the villainous Carl from the 1990 movie "Ghost". A bit of homage may have been paid to that fact when a season two episode was entitled "Molly, You In Danger Girl", a famous quote from "Ghost".

Leo McGarry and Josh Lyman were characters from "The West Wing".
2. Fitz was married to Mellie when he entered his presidency. Mellie was her nickname, but what was the First Lady's given first name?

Answer: Melody

Melody "Mellie" Fitzgerald was a ruthless First Lady. She was part of the conspiracy to get her husband elected. Though an extremely popular candidate, Fitz was lacking enough support in some Ohio counties. So, with ringleader Cyrus urging them forward, he, Mellie, Verna Thorton, Hollis Doyle, and Olivia agreed on rigging the electronic polling boxes in Defiance, Ohio. Fitz eventually found out about this from Verna as she lay dying in the hospital. She also admitted to hiring the hit woman "Becky" to assassinate him. She'd set Hollis up to take the fall for that, but it did not pan out. To prevent Verna from talking to Assistant U.S. Attorney David Rosen, he went ahead and finished the job that cancer started. The people he'd trusted the most had turned him into a murderer.

Bellamy Young played Mellie, Kerry Washington played Olivia, Gregg Henry played Hollis, Joshua Malina played David, and Debra Mooney played Verna. Debra also guest starred on "The Originals", "Arrested Development", and "The Practice".
3. Who were the Godparents to Cyrus' and James' daughter, Ella?

Answer: Fitz and Olivia

In an effort to keep James off of the polling fraud story, Cyrus arranged to adopt a baby. He'd previously admitted to James that he did not want to have a child. He said that Fitz was his baby and he did not have the energy for another one. When James went back to work as a White House reporter, it forced Cyrus to reconsider that position. They did adopt baby Ella, and Fitz and Olivia were her Godparents. At this point, Fitz felt so betrayed by Olivia that they hadn't spoken in months. But, seeing her again he couldn't control himself. He chased her down as she tried to sneak out of the Christening party early, and they 'consummated' in computer room of some sort. Afterward, Fitz told her that they were totally over.

James Novak was played by actor Dan Bucatinsky. Dan has also starred in "Web Therapy", "The Comeback" and "Marry Me".
4. Edison Davis proposed to Olivia for the second time in season two.

Answer: True

Edison and Olivia had a prior relationship in the time frame before the series began, and it rekindled as she struggled to free herself from Fitz. So, he proposed to her again. Fitz had asked Mellie for a divorce after the assassination attempt, and begged Olivia to wait for him. So, she turned Edison down a second time. Edison said to her that he'd proposed twice with the same ring (his grandmother's) and twice she'd said "no". He just wanted to know why. As usual, Olivia knew when not to speak. When she went to Fitz, at Verna's funeral, to let him know she would wait for him, he revealed he'd changed his mind. He said being president was more important than divorcing Mellie to marry his mistress. He also said Olivia should agree with that as she'd worked so hard to make him president. It was then Olivia knew Fitz had to have found out about the polling fraud.

Senator Edison Davis was played by Norm Lewis. Lewis was also on "All My Children" in 1998 and guest starred on "The Blacklist" in 2014.
5. Before being saved by Olivia and turned into Quinn Perkins, who was Quinn originally?

Answer: Lindsay Dwyer

Quinn was dating a software designer named Jesse Tyler, who was contracted by Hollis Doyle to rig the software in a polling machine. When Jesse discovered the massive payout Doyle received as a result of that contracted job, he demanded five million dollars to keep quiet about the fraud. Doyle sent "Becky" the assassin out kill Jesse. She in turn set Lindsay up for the bomb sent to Cytron, Jesse's work. It killed him and about five other employees. Lindsay was innocent, so Olivia saved her. She sent Huck to drug her, transport her to Washington D.C. and leave her in a hotel with the new identity of Quinn Perkins. Later on in that time line, she sent Harrison Wright out to hire Quinn to work for Pope and Associates.

Katie Lowes played Quinn, Guillermo Diaz played Huck, Susan Pourfar played Becky and Adam Shapiro played Jesse. The three incorrect choices were all aliases used by Sydney Bristow in the series "Alias".
6. Which of Olivia's Gladiators had a romantic affair with Assistant U.S. Attorney David Rosen?

Answer: Abby

Olivia had saved Abby from an abusive husband at some point in the past, and Abby became one of her Gladiators. Abby was still needy, snarky, judgmental, and seemed a bit jealous of Olivia at times. It seemed that she was maybe jealous that Olivia didn't confide everything to her. So, she became involved with David, which quickly lead to a bit of betrayal on Abby's part. When Olivia found out, she employed Harrison with the task of breaking the relationship up. Harrison, very much a 'do what it takes no questions asked' yes man to Olivia, was happy to step in and do his part. Abby eventually learned the truth, and it was Harrison who made her see what she owed Olivia. Abby redeemed herself when she stole the memory card with fraudulent voting info on it out of David's safe. Abby was excellent at breaking into things.

Darby Stanchfield played Abby Whelan and Columbus Short played Harrison Wright.
7. Of the choices offered here, which character was NOT in a top secret government organization called B-613 at one time?

Answer: Edison

Huck, like his "pal" Becky, was a killer. Olivia saved Huck, like she had the rest of her team. Huck was not his real name, and he had many skills. He was an excellent killer, cleaner, interrogator, hacker and tracker. He'd received intense 'training' by the secret B-613 organization in all of these skills. They'd scarred him deeply, making him addicted to killing people. He admitted he truly enjoyed being a killer and even attended AA meetings to deal with his desires. That was where he first met the so called Becky. He thought she was an addict, but she was only pretending in order to gain his trust. She was spying on Huck and his team for Verna Thornton, and she set him up for the assassination attempt on the president. The truth came out and she was arrested trying to finish that murder. In season one, Huck had to go back to his old ways of interrogation to discover the location of Amanda Tanner's body. He tortured fellow B-613er Charlie until they found her. In season two's "Spies Like Us", some of Huck's other B-613 cohorts were revealed. We'd known about Charlie, but found out about Melvin (actor Sam Anderson), Betsy (actress Mary Pat Gleason), and Teresa. Later into season two we found out that Captain Ballard and Olivia's father were members as well.

Liza Weil played Amanda. She'd previously starred on "Gilmore Girls" and went on to star in "How to Get Away With Murder". George Newbern played Charlie. Older folks like myself might recognize him from the early 1990's movies "Father of the Bride" and its sequel.
Guillermo Diaz, who played Huck so perfectly, has been in shows like "Weeds", "No Ordinary Family" and "Mercy".
8. To whom did Fitz first admit that he'd killed Supreme Court Justice Verna Thornton?

Answer: Cyrus

Cyrus had been tirelessly trying to get back into Fitz's inner circle of trust. When he realized Mellie had been undermining his attempts, he asked Olivia for her advice. Olivia said to leave Mellie alone, and that she'd cross a line and sink herself.

She did that, of course, as she became arrogant that Fitz only trusted her. As Cyrus regained his trust, Fitz began communicating with him again. Cyrus made Fitz realize that the polling fraud was not a betrayal of him personally. He admitted it was wrong in the eyes of America, but to Cyrus and the election team it was their own version of patriotism.

This eventually made a very sad, drinking all the time Fitz reveal to Cyrus he'd murdered Verna.
9. In possibly the best episode of season two, "Seven Fifty-Two" revealed a great deal more about Huck's life. In the episode a traumatized Huck recites that number over and over. What did the number mean?

Answer: It was a time- 7:52 am

In the previous episode, "Molly, You In Danger, Girl", Huck had been attacked inside a storage unit by Charlie and locked inside a small crate. It took Quinn over two hours to find him and get him out. Once out, he was traumatized to the point of physical debilitation and muttered that number continuously. Each of the Gladiators took turns talking to him, trying to break through. During these times, flashbacks would show Huck's evolution in the CIA.

He was forced to accept a job with them, forced to become a torturer and killer, and forced to let go of his wife and baby son.

After an unknown amount of time locked inside a small underground bunker, he finally told them what they wanted to hear. He said he had no wife or son. It was Charlie who eventually let Huck escape.

It was Olivia who found him on the train platform and in this episode it was Olivia who got through to him at last. She told him he'd saved her five years ago. When she saw his eyes and could see he was even sadder than she was, she knew she was no longer alone.

The end of the episode revealed that 7:52 am was the time Huck saw his son again for the first time since they'd been separated. I believe the time represented his "happy place" or place of hope inside his mind.
10. In the season two finale, who said this? "I'm not going to leave them. They need me. I'm their gladiator."

Answer: Olivia

In the finale, Cyrus had a heart attack, told Olivia that Fitz had murdered Verna, and showed Fitz the video of Olivia and Jake having sex. It was time to end the fantasy that Olivia and the president could ever be a couple while he was in office. And, though Fitz was ready to forgive her and move on, she was not willing to continue.

She told him they'd all gone way too far to ensure his presidency remain intact, but that he was now allowed a clean slate to move forward. She said she'd taken her employees too far over the wrong cliff to leave them now.

At the end of the episode, the press had discovered that Olivia was the president's mistress. She was ushered away from the onslaught and into a limo where her father, Rowan Pope, awaited her.
