Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the season five premier, "Heavy is the Head", a visibly wrecked Huck asked Olivia to "fix" him. She honestly said that she had no idea how to do so, so Huck was forced to seek help elsewhere. Who did he go to for help?

Answer: Jake

Huck was staying at Olivia's place, and she'd been spending most of her time with Fitz at the White House. When she returned home, Huck begged her for help. He was off the rails, again, and she'd always brought him back in the past. He wanted to see his wife and son, but knew he could not go to them while his inner beast roamed free. Olivia, normally the one who takes care of all her people, admitted that this time she was at a loss. So, near the end of the episode, we saw Huck going to Jake for help. Who better to know how to tame your inner serial killer?

Also in this premier- Fitz gave Mellie divorce papers after he attended her swearing in ceremony as the newest senator for Virginia. Abby discovered Olivia and Fitz's relationship from Liz North. Mellie went to Cyrus for help with her personal and business issues, and he declined to help her just in case Fitz ever decided to "take him back". And, Olivia's main job as a fixer was for the Queen of Caldonia. The queen had her daughter-in-law murdered because she was potentially pregnant with non-royal blood. While "Caldonia" is not a real place, Caledonia is a real place located in the UK.

Dearbhla Molloy (born in 1946), who played Queen Isabel, has enjoyed a very long career in TV and movies.
2. "Yes"- "America's Mistress", Olivia Pope, took a case and left town after photos were leaked to Sally Langston. Who was it that leaked the photos of Olivia and Fitz to Sally?

Answer: Liz North

Former Vice President Sally Langston bemoaned Fitz's ability to run the country while devoting himself to his mistress, Olivia Pope. Fitz believed it was Mellie who leaked them, so he had David Rosen investigate her electronic devices. While her password had been used to access the White House servers, no evidence was found she'd downloaded anything onto her computer or other devices. In the end, it was Abby who put it all together and realized it had been Liz. She forced Liz to admit to it, and then all she asked for in return was equality in the dispensing of White House information.

Also in this episode- Olivia, Quinn, Jake, and Huck tracked down a suspected murderer named Gavin Price (actor Josh Brener). He was out on bail, and accused of murdering his wealthy father. He was guilty, and they did recover him. Jake helped Olivia through her ordeal as America's Mistress, and when she returned home from her case, told the press "yes" when asked if she was the president's mistress.
Quinn finally forgave Huck for his murdering of all of those grand jury members. He was relieved by her forgiveness, and they commiserated over how messed up they both had become.
3. "Paris is Burning"- An urgent interview was needed where Mellie had to say she and Fitz would be divorcing amicably. Mellie was furious about this, but considered it. Who returned to the White House to negotiate Mellie's demands?

Answer: Cyrus

Mellie didn't even know she had demands, until he showed up, as she was still in shock. When he asked her what she wanted, her first answer was to destroy Olivia Pope. Then, the pair cooked up a ridiculous list of demands, which Fitz agreed to reluctantly. Then Mellie changed her mind and told Cyrus he'd gone soft. Cyrus tried to get his job back from Fitz, which was all he wanted, and Fitz told him to leave. Then, Fitz went to Mellie and gave her a sincere (but pointless) apology story for what seemed like the 10th time. So Cyrus, beyond humiliated by Fitz, told Mellie she'd been played. She almost got to the interview, but at the last minute realized she had indeed been played. She and Cyrus left the White House together, and America never got their answers about Olivia. In between these occurrences, Mellie had a talk with Olivia about how lonely and stifling being the First Lady was, and Olivia knew that role was not for her. So, at the end, Abby did what she had to do, and allowed the press to throw Olivia's reputation under the bus. Fitz wanted to fire Abby, but Liv told him that Abby was doing what she had to.

Mellie inspired the monstrous side of Cyrus back out of its cage.
4. "Dog-Whistle Politics"- In the midst of Fitz trying to avoid impeachment, Jake trying to avoid the resurrection of B613, and Olivia avoiding the world, who did Quinn hire to work for Pope and Associates?

Answer: Marcus Walker

Upon her first request, Marcus flatly refused her offer to become a "gladiator in a suit". But, he came back and said he owed Olivia, and he needed the money. His tactics with the media turned out to be very strong, and Huck volunteered to inform a reluctant Olivia that Marcus was their newest gladiator. Olivia helped Marcus after the death of the mayor's wife, whom Marcus had been having an affair with, and whose husband had her killed. We also found out that Jake had once been married to a fellow spy, who was going by "Elise" these days. At the end of the episode, Mellie agreed with her female senators to impeach Fitz, after Fitz publicly came to take Olivia out on a date.

Cornelius Smith Jr. played Marcus. He first appeared in the season four episode "The Lawn Chair". He also played Frankie Hubbard on "All My Children".
5. "You Got Served"- Who tipped the press off about the diamond ring Fitz had given to Olivia?

Answer: Mellie

Olivia hired Leo Bergen to represent her interests in the affair heard 'round the world. He wanted to sell it as an epic love story, but that did not appeal to her. Quinn suggested 'Olivia Pope, Woman of the People', and she liked that idea. Unfortunately, when that seemed to be working, and Mellie was forced to resign from the impeachment committee, she let the press know about the family heirloom Fitz had given to Olivia. Cyrus, wallowing in self pity, but enjoying the media circus on TV, told Mellie "she's actually managed to go from being a slut, to every woman, to your sister wife in under 24 hours". That's when she confessed to revealing the truth about the ring. He then invited her to sit and enjoy the circus with him, and showed her all the food options they could share. So, she did.

At the end of the episode, Fitz was forced to hire Cyrus back as his Chief of Staff. Cyrus was the only person who knew that Fitz had seen the tape of Olivia's abduction, which prompted him to go to war with West Angola in order to get her back. Cyrus was clear on what he wanted, which was a full presidential pardon for all crimes he'd committed for Fitz and that it would be signed, sealed, and non-revocable. He also wanted Liz North fired and not allowed any new job within the administration. Fitz agreed.
6. "Get Out of Jail, Free"- Was it Olivia who revealed to Mellie that Eli Pope had her son Jerry killed?

Answer: Yes

In order to avoid Fitz's impeachment, Olivia went to Mellie to ask for a favor. Eli/Rowan Pope had been targeted for assassination while in prison, and he offered to give Olivia all of the dirt he knew about the Senate Judiciary Committee so that the impeachment hearings would come to an end. He wanted out of prison so he wouldn't be killed, and Senator Mellie Grant had the power to make that happen. When Olivia explained exactly who Eli really was, Mellie refused to help her. So, when Mellie asked Olivia if she knew how many people "that man" had really hurt, Olivia paused, and then revealed that he'd had Jerry killed. Mellie did come to the conclusion, after a heated argument with Fitz, that Olivia had actually set her free. So, she did get Eli out of prison.

Also in this episode: Olivia almost had to marry Fitz to get out of testifying, Vice President Susan Ross discussed resigning her position with David Rosen, and Jake's wife (also a spy, and sent to kill Eli/Rowan) was found dead by Jake at the train station. Elise (Jake's wife) was played by Mía Maestro. She also played Nadia Santos on the series "Alias".

This episode was directed by "Grey's Anatomy" star Chandra Wilson. She has also directed episodes of "Grey's" and "The Fosters".
7. "Even the Devil Deserves a Second Chance"- Who said, "He's not the president anymore, Olivia, you are"?

Answer: Cyrus

Cyrus was extremely jealous that Olivia was the only one Fitz would listen to on how to handle situations. Cyrus had connived his way back into being the right hand of the president, but it was more like he was constantly forced to sit on his hands. Then, he finally figured it out. He wasn't the man behind the woman behind the man, as he'd thought, he was the man behind the woman, period. Olivia "had the Oval"; she was running the country.

Also in this episode, Jake confronted Olivia about getting Rowan/Eli out of prison. Fitz sent Jake after Rowan, to kill him once and for all (mixed blessing if that happened), and Olivia almost confessed she'd been the one to free him (with Mellie's help). Liz angled for a job inside the White House, lest she turn to Sally Langston's TV show and spill dirt. In the end, Fitz gave her the job as VP Susan Ross' Chief of Staff, and Liz went on Sally's show to sing Fitz's praises. Liz and David Rosen also became intimate after a hateful verbal back and forth. Fitz unknowingly gave the Presidential Medal of Honor to a rapist named Frank Holland. Frank was played by William Russ.
8. "Baby, It's Cold Outside"- Mellie decided to hold a filibuster during a vote on the proposed annual budget. What agency was she defending against "discretionary funding"?

Answer: Planned Parenthood

She found out that the funding for Planned Parenthood was being shifted to "discretionary funding", which meant the money could be taken away at any time. She had to stand for 16 hours and was allowed no breaks, and if she did so, her opposing view could be voted on. Olivia sent the VP, Susan Ross, in to ask Mellie and extremely long question, which was the only way Mellie could run out to use to the bathroom. Mellie made her point, lasted the entire time, and won.

Also in this episode, Olivia found herself fed up with the role of First Lady (even though she was not actually a First Lady), David tried to give Liz a bracelet for Christmas (Susan Ross got it instead), Huck allowed Eli to live, and Olivia had an abortion.
9. "It's Hard Out Here for a General"- General Diane Peters was the first female head of a specific agency. When her boyfriend was framed for being a whistle blower, Diane was dismissed and Jake Ballard was made head of this agency. Which agency was it?

Answer: NSA

Diane was confident that she had properly vetted her boyfriend before allowing him into her life. Jake killed her boyfriend, and Fitz accepted Diane's resignation. He then appointed Jake as head of the NSA, all how Jake and Papa Pope planned it. When Olivia realized this truth, she confronted her father and Jake (who was living with Eli). Eli told his daughter she needed to get power of her own, like he and Jake had done. In this episode, six months had passed since Olivia ended her relationship with Fitz, and she had Jake had resumed a sexual relationship. It was almost as though they were having hate sex, as they had almost no conversations at all. Fitz had replaced Olivia with Abby, at least in the aspect of his closest confidant. Abby finally had to put her foot down about the intrusive nature of his co-dependency after Olivia explained that it wasn't that he was lonely, it was that he was alone. Also in this episode, Huck told Quinn that they had to protect Marcus from themselves, as he was normal, not like them.

McNally Sagal played General Peters. People may recognize her as Tara's boss on "Sons of Anarchy".
10. "The Fish Rots From the Head"- Whose quote was this, "the fish rots from the head"?

Answer: Olivia's

Olivia had to say this to Fitz to get his attention. After Abby called her in to cover up the death of a hooker who'd partied with the Secret Service, Marcus came to Olivia and told her it hadn't been an accidental overdose as originally thought. The hooker, Megan, was said to have arrived very intoxicated and agitated, and while dancing with another hooker (Erin aka Fantasia), Megan fell onto a table and hit her head. Marcus reported that the fatal heroin overdose had been twice what was necessary and administered after she hit her head. Olivia stayed with the party line of "we work for the client, not the hooker". But, when she found out from Mellie how Fitz was streaming women in and out of his bedroom at the White House, she decided to make the Secret Service agents pay for killing Megan to cover up their bad behavior. When she told Fitz about it, essentially blaming him for setting that bad example, he became angry with her. But, in true Olivia form she made him see how she was right.

Also in this episode, Olivia spied on Jake (though he knew about it) as Jake dated an upstanding woman named Vanessa. She knew Jake had some angle with the woman, and in the end she walked in just after he'd become engaged to Vanessa. Vanessa was perfect on paper. Maybe to make a good First Lady? Meanwhile, Cyrus was off conning Francisco "Frankie" Vargas into running against the Republicans for president. He used Vargas' sick daughter to get under his skin. He told Vargas the tale of Oliver, Cyrus' brother who been in a hit and run accident before Cyrus went off to college. He talked of the sacrifice he tried to make for Oliver, though Oliver wouldn't allow it. Oliver, of course, was a work of fiction.

Joelle Carter played Jake's fiancee Vanessa Moss. Fans may have recognized Joelle from her role as Ava Crowder on "Justified".
11. "Pencils Down"- Who accidentally revealed to Susan Ross that David had more than one woman in his life (romantically)?

Answer: Abby

Susan already suspected that David was cheating on her. She discussed it with Fitz, who told her that if she suspected it, it was probably true. David tried to assuade her fears, but Abby accidentally revealed it to her. Abby knew David had two lovers, and he'd tried to get her advice on what to do, but Abby always shooed him away. So, Abby herself never realized that Susan was one of his ladies. Susan dumped David at the end of the episode.

Also in this episode, Quinn posed as a former Smith University alum named Jacqueline Horton in order to surveil Vanessa Moss up close. They figured out Jake was using Vanessa's accounts to funnel money into a Super Pac for Edison's presidential run. And, Alex Vargas (Frankie's brother) came to Liv to make a deal. He'd trade dirt on Susan for dirt on Edison. After a verbally brutal encounter with Edison, Liv agreed to take that deal for Mellie's campaign.
12. "The Miseducation of Susan Ross"- It was discovered that Susan's daughter Casey was fathered by a man named Ronnie who was currently in prison.

Answer: True

In her first Republican debate with Mellie Grant and the Donald Trump-esque billionaire Hollis Doyle, Susan faltered greatly. Her presence paled in comparison to those two big personalities. She was also dealing with the end of her relationship to David Rosen, whom she'd discovered cheated on her. But, at the last moment, Susan won the debate by saying that sometimes wives should be their husbands' keepers. She said if she'd spoken up when her husband was in the war, she may have saved his life. John was killed protecting a pipeline, not America's safety and freedoms, that profited businessmen like Hollis Doyle. This victory had Liv looking into a way to discredited Susan. Pope and Associates found out that her daughter Casey was not John's, but the result of a fling with a man named Ronnie. Ronnie had been in prison the last ten years, and Liv offered to get him out if he'd speak publicly about being Casey's father, and she coerced him into giving a blood sample that proved he was the child's father. In the end, Ronnie hanged himself in prison and Liv decided, on Fitz's urging, not to play this dirty when a child was involved.

Matthew John Armstrong played Ronnie. He's also guest starred on "The Shield", "Private Practice", "Bones", and "Supernatural".
13. In "Till Death Do us Part", we found out Jake Ballard's original name. What was it?

Answer: Pete Harris

Pete Harris was from an abusive background, and in the military when Command (Eli) first came across him. Pete was offered the chance to enter B613 and become Jake Ballard, but he resisted. It had been trained into him, via his father, to be resistant to authority. Eventually, Eli (Command/Rowan) convinced him to join, and then after his training, allowed Jake the choice to stay or go. This choice led Jake to go back home and kill his father, and then return to Command and become a B613 operative.

The incorrect choices are all names of characters played by Scott Foley before his role as Jake Ballard.
14. "That's My Girl"- In this season five finale, who joined the ticket as Mellie's Republican Vice Presidential running mate?

Answer: Jake

At the start of the episode, Jake killed Vanessa's father, presumably by poisoning him. It appeared the man had a heart attack after drinking wine Jake poured. Jake waited for him to die, and then called 9-1-1 for "help". Eli/Rowan/Command told Edison that Jake would be his VP running mate, but in the previous episode, Olivia helped Edison out of that predicament. Jake also told Edison in that episode to get a message to Olivia that he wanted to escape and needed her help. Edison delivered that message in the finale, and Liv helped Jake out by adding him to Mellie's ticket instead of Edison's ticket.

She went into her father's home and took him out, which had been Huck's advice. Eli even held a gun to Jake's head, and Liv (in true Eli form) told him to go ahead and kill Jake. Eli backed off, and they left together, and Jake publicly became Mellie's VP running mate.

He did express a desire for he and Liv to just run off and depart their current lives, but Liv wanted to win.
15. "That's My Girl"- Who became Frankie Vargas' Democratic Vice Presidential running mate in this season five finale?

Answer: Cyrus

Eli came to Cyrus and blackmailed him into taking Jake onto Frankie's ticket. Cyrus went to Liv, who was already trying to save Jake from her father, and told him what was going on. Cyrus had originally offered the VP slot to David Rosen, who turned it down, and then reconsidered at Liz's urging. When Liv saved Jake, Cyrus took over as Frankie's running mate. It was what Cyrus had planned all along, and from the looks of things, Eli was also satisfied with the outcome of Jake's situation. The season ended with Eli raising a glass to Mellie and Jake's TV appearance and saying "that's my girl". Liv had finally fulfilled her destiny as Eli's work of art. She became Command (metaphorically). I say it's time to take out Eli for everyone else's own good...

After the season finale, Kerry Washington and Shonda Rhimes appeared on Jimmy Kimmel's talk show. They talked about Kerry being pregnant again, and how they'd covered up her first pregnancy on "Scandal". They also talked about how another of Shonda's projects, "The Catch", had just been picked up for a second season.
