Answer: Curtis Armstrong

Curtis Armstrong played Metatron. Determined to be the new God, he spent season 9 scheming and killing people and angels. In the last episode, Dean attempted to kill him with the First Blade, but since Metatron was powered by the angel tablet, he was able to kill Dean with an angel blade instead.

Answer: Osric Chau

Osric Chau played the prophet Kevin Tran. He was killed by Gadreel, on Metatron's orders, in "Holy Terror." He then came back as a ghost in "Captives," asking the brothers to save his mother from Crowley.

Answer: Tahmoh Penikett

Tahmoh Penikett played the vessel for Gadreel. Gadreel was in this character's body when Dean requested help for Sam from the angels. He lied to Dean, telling him he was Ezekial, and convinced Dean to trick Sam into consenting to using Sam as his vessel instead.

After Dean discovered his deception and Sam kicked him out, Gadreel again possessed the bartender. While Jared Padalecki's character was a vessel for Gadreel for part of season 9, his character never worked as a bartender.

Mark Sheppard played Crowley. At the beginning of the season, he was held captive by the Winchesters, stuffed in the Impala's trunk, and called "the junk in my trunk" by Dean in "Devil May Care." He later negotiated to be set free in exchange for saving Sam from Gadreel, and by the end of the season had managed to manipulate the pieces on the game board in such a way that Dean killed Abaddon, and was reborn as a demon.

Misha Collins played Castiel, who had a tough time throughout the season, since Metatron had stolen his angel grace at the end of season 8. He was homeless in "I'm No Angel," working at a "Gas-n-Sip" in "Heaven Can't Wait," and was captured and tortured in "Holy Terror." But, he managed to capture Metatron in "Do You Believe in Miracles," but not before Metatron killed Dean.

Brianna Buckmaster played Sheriff Donna Hanscum. The brothers met the sheriff while investigating a strange killing in "The Purge," and later encountered her again at the spa where they found the monster, a pishtaco.

Jared Padalecki played Sam Winchester. The character was dying at the beginning of the season, after nearly completing the trials to close the Gates of Hell at the end of season 8. To save his life in "I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here," Dean tricked him into being a vessel for an angel, so the angel could cure him from the inside.

After Sam expelled the angel Gadreel in "Road Trip," he continued to hunt with his brother, and in "Captives," he rescued Linda Tran from a storage pod, where she was being held captive by Crowley and his demons.

Lindsey McKeon played Tessa. The reaper killed herself by impaling herself on the First Blade during "Stairway to Heaven." Tessa was a recurring character on "Supernatural" since season 2, when she attempted to reap Dean in "In My Time of Dying."

DJ Qualls played Garth Fitzgerald, a hunter friend of the brothers. In "Sharp Teeth," the brothers found out that their friend had been turned into a werewolf. Garth had married another werewolf and lived on animal hearts, so the brothers let him go.

Felicia Day played Charlie Bradbury. In "Slumber Party," Charlie came to the bunker to help the Winchester brothers with the Men of Letters' computer, but ended up helping them and Dorothy deal with the Wicked Witch. Charlie then decided to accompany Dorothy back to Oz to fight the Wicked Witch.

Kavan Smith played Cuthbert Sinclair. The brothers encountered the rogue Man of Letters during their search for the First Blade in "Blade Runners." Sam and Crowley tried to save Dean, and Dean ended up killing Sinclair with the First Blade. Kavan Sinclair also played the character who had his kidney cut out in "Time is on My Side" in season 3.

Jensen Ackles played Dean Winchester. To save his brother, he tricked Sam into consenting to angel possession. He then lied to Sam, Castiel, and everyone else about it, because he was afraid Sam would expel the Angel and die if he found out. In the second half of the season, he took on the Mark of Cain, and struggled with the violent force it unleashed within him. Dean was killed in the last episode of season 9, but once he held the First Blade, he was reborn as a demon.

Alaina Huffman played Abaddon, the Knight of Hell who had followed Henry Winchester to the 21st century during season 8. She spent much of season 9 fighting to rule Hell, in place of Crowley. She was killed by Dean in "King of the Damned."

Kim Rhodes played Sheriff Jody Mills. She brought the brothers two cases during season 9, and helped them solve both. "Rock and a Hard Place" involved Vesta, and "Alex Annie Alexis Ann" involved a nest of vampires.

Tim Omundson played Cain, the father of murder. In search of the First Blade, Crowley led Dean to Cain in "First Born." While Cain did not have the First Blade, he told the pair that he had hidden it in the deepest ocean, and he then gave Dean the Mark of Cain.
