Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The show began abruptly with a tribute to one of the icons who was portrayed in one of the movies honored with nominations this year, Mister Fred Rogers. Rogers in the opening was played by what singer?

Answer: Janelle Monae

The montage evolved into a larger scale production that included music from Elton John (portrayed in "Rocketman") and the movie "Midsommar", and included Billy Porter singing as well.
2. The opening monologue joined Chris Rock and Steve Martin bouncing different styles off each other. One audience member who is not involved heavily in show business got a mini-roast from Chris Rock, that Martin refused to join in, he "likes to receive his packages on time". Who regretted his decision to attend early on?

Answer: Jeff Bezos, Founder of Amazon

Rock's biggest dig against Bezos was saying "Bezos got divorced and STILL was the richest man in the world. Bezos watched 'Marriage Story' and thought it was a comedy". Jeff Bezos' smile got a little tighter on that one.
3. "Into the Unknown" by Idina Menzel from "Frozen II" was the first nominee for Best Song to be performed, but with a twist. What made the performance unique?

Answer: It was performed in multiple languages

Idina Menzel was joined on stage by singers who performed the song in her place in different language in their country's release. Josh Gad in the introduction stated that the movie was released in 45 languages, this was merely a handful of performers who joined Menzel.
4. Taiko Waititi won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "Jojo Rabbit". In his acceptance speech, he thanked someone for giving him the book, for without that event, it never would have happened. Whom did he thank?

Answer: His mother

His mom was at the Oscars and was able to get the thanks in person.
5. Prior to Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig announcing the nominees for Best Costume Design, they did a montage of songs featuring fashion references. Which of these songs was NOT used their rapid fire montage?

Answer: Itsy-Bitsy Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

"These Boots Were Made For Walkin'" and "U Got the Look" were also featured. The previous award they took the opportunity to audition for the directors in the audience to prove they aren't just comedy actors, but with all of their dramatic attempts, it just made the audience laugh even more.
6. The winner of the Best Documentary Feature both came up to accept together. Something was very evident in the male/female pair that won; they both had a feature that was very similar. What was it?

Answer: Their hairstyle

Both the male and female, Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, were strikingly bald. Julia Reichert did an interview with Prevention magazine soon after the Oscars were over and disclosed she is fighting a form of terminal urothelial cancer, which is the cause of her baldness. She and Steven have been in a relationship outside of their filming collaborations for thirty years.
7. A surprise performance at the end of a montage containing songs from movies that are synonymous with the movie they came from. And one of the Oscar winners popped up from the back of the stage to perform the song that won the Oscar seventeen years before. Who was the performer?

Answer: Eminem

Coming out of nowhere with a full orchestra behind him, a 47 year old bearded Eminem pumped the crowd up with a song that broke the hip-hop seal at the Oscars in 2003.
8. Tom Hanks came on to make an announcement of great proportions to the Academy of Arts and Sciences. What did he announce?

Answer: The opening of a museum later that year

The fact that there is no museum already in Hollywood for this is baffling to Tom Hanks; that a town built on motion pictures doesn't have a museum devoted to this medium in Hollywood is ludicrous. It was set to open in December of 2020.
9. James Corden and Rebel Wilson came on to introduce the winner for Best Visual Effects while pointing out the importance of good visual effects based on the failure of achieving this on what recent movie they both starred in?

Answer: Cats

"Cats" was so universally lambasted that Corden and Wilson felt the need to join the roasting by dressing up as cats in their introductions.
10. SIgourney Weaver, Brie Larson and Gal Gadot introduced the playing of all the nominees for Best Original Score, by stating for the first time in the Academy's 92-year history, what would be happening for the first time?

Answer: The orchestra conductor would be female

While John Williams had 52 nominations over his career up to this point, he HAS had years he was not nominated. Eimear Noone broke the seal on only male conductors in the pit, and she did very well.
11. Best Song was won by a songwriting team of legendary status. But considering one of them walked off with an Oscar for the same category in the mid-1990s, it was enigmatic that he said they had never done this before. Who said this?

Answer: Elton John

All of these had won previous Oscars, but Elton and his longtime musical partner Bernie Taupin had never won an Oscar together. They thanked many people including Taron Egerton who played Elton John in "Rocketman".
12. The ubiquitous In Memoriam montage was overlaid with a haunting rendition the Beatles' "Yesterday", sung by whom?

Answer: Billie Eilish

Introduced by Steven Spielberg, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas on piano performed on a montage book-ended by the recent losses of Academy Award winners Kobe Bryant and Kirk Douglas.
13. Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for his harrowing performance in "Joker". He finalized his acceptance speech with a lyric from whom?

Answer: River Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix said the lyric was written by his brother when he was only 17 years old, 6 years before he passed away. He wrote, "Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow."
14. Bringing the crowd to their feet even before the Best Picture nominees were read was what two-time Oscar winner?

Answer: Jane Fonda

She seemed visibly moved by the quick standing ovation prior to reading the long list of Best Picture nominees.
15. In what got the loudest roar from the audience, the winner for Best Picture went to "Parasite", which achieved a first in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards. What was the first?

Answer: First foreign language movie to win Best Picture

One of the unavoidable facts for the overtime of the event was the fact that with all the awards that "Parasite" won, it required an acceptance speech twice as long as normal, as the majority of the speeches required an interpreter for the South Korean winners.

But despite the fact of the length of the ceremonies, when the lights went down on the final winners before all the top dogs of the winners had spoken, the crowd revolted with motions to bring the lights back up, which they did, and that allowed the final speakers to speak. Kudos to the interpreter; she had a lot of face time on this night.
