Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 5, teams flew into which German city?

Answer: Munich

Leaving Bangkok, Thailand in Leg 5, teams were required to book a thirteen hour flight to the city of Munich, Germany, and because of this, all eight pairs took a thirteen hour flight, together, into the wintery landscape of Bavaria. Upon arrival, teams took a train into the city proper and visited the clothing establishment known as Wies'n Tracht & Mehr whereupon they were fitted for lederhosen and dirndl.

They would spend the rest of this leg in these traditional outfits, regardless of tasks.
2. Of critical importance, teams were forced to do which of these throughout Germany in Leg 5?

Answer: Drive themselves

After getting dressed for the leg, teams had to proceed on foot through Munich to Alter Peter Tower where the could climb to the top and use a pair of binoculars to search out one of several marked Ford Focus vehicles containing their next clue. From there, they had to drive themselves (in standard vehicles) to the Schlafwagenfabrik factory building where they would need to reverse themselves through an indoor winter wonderland, using their rear-view cameras to read their next destination-- SCHLIERSEE-- off the reflected images of a series of signs.

When this destination was relayed, they would receive their next clue.
3. How many teams completed the 'Stein' Detour task in Germany (in Leg 5)?

Answer: Two

Reaching Schliersee, teams hopped into paddleboats to nab their Detour clue. For this one, Aly and Steve and Matt and Ashley completed 'Stein', during which they needed to carry twenty-two steins along a marked path through a busy Oktoberfet gathering. All remaining teams completed 'Stack', which sent them to Hasenöhrl-Hof to participate in a round of crate-stacking. If they could stack fifteen crates, vertically, without knocking their pile over, they could collect their next clue.
4. The Leg 5 Road Block was all about German courtship. What did participants need to do for this task?

Answer: Sing

After their Detour tasks, teams needed to drive to the Markus Wasmeier Museum in Schliersee where one team member had to engage in German courtship, wooing their partners by reciting a poem in-tune and with proper words while climbing a ladder to a Bavarian balcony. If they properly sang the traditional song they would be rewarded with a clue, but if not, they would be splashed with a cold bucket of water. Aly, Ashley, Laura, Jackie, Jenny, Blair, and Mike took care of this task.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race during Leg 5 (in Germany)?

Answer: Bergen and Kurt

After their Road Block, teams had to drive themselves to their fifth Pit Stop on the shores of Lake Spitzingsee in Schliersee, Germany. Aly and Steve were the first to arrive, having stayed ahead of the pack throughout the entire leg. For their success, they were rewarded with a pair of 2015 Ford Focus vehicles, one of the largest prizes of the season. All other teams checked into the Pit Stop in due time, but Bergen and Kurt opted to take a taxi to Schlafwagenfabrik, automatically incurring a two-hour penalty for being unable to complete the task there.

They ended up eliminated at a train station somewhere between the Detour and the Road Block; Phil came out to break the news.
6. To start Leg 6, teams flew to which French city?

Answer: Nice

Starting Leg 6, the seven competing teams needed to fly over the Alps from Munich, Germany to Nice, France where they could stop off for an overnight visit at the Hotel Westminster. Upon arrival, they would be able to be fitted by tailors for their outfits for the remainder of the leg.

This meant that when they woke up for their early helicopter flights into Monaco, they would be dressed to the nines. Teams took these flights based on their arrivals at the hotel, each leaving equal times apart from one another.
7. Completing a Road Block to 'spoil their partners' in Leg 6, teams collected chocolates and which types of flowers?

Answer: Roses

Upon landing at a helicopter pad in Fontvieille, Monaco, teams made a choice for their Road Block task and one member of each was able to take some time to spoil their partner. For this challenge, the selected team members needed to head into the city on foot to locate a flower cart in St Martin Gardens and a chocolatier in the village proper. Once they had items from both, they could race down to Port Hercules and hand off their gifts to their waiting partners (on a luxury yacht) to receive their next clue. Steve, Mike, Jenny, Laura, Hayley, Jackie, and Matt elected to complete this task.
8. In Leg 8, teams had their Detour tasks chosen by which of these?

Answer: Roulette wheel

After the Road Block, teams were told to head to the Casino de Monte Carlo with their Road Block items in hand. Upon arriving they would be led to their next task-- a game of roulette in one of the most lavish casinos in the world. The task was simple; all they needed to do was take one spin on the wheel, and where the ball landed (red or black) would determine which Detour choice they would be forced to complete. Regardless of the choice they were led to complete, they finished their time at the casino by visiting the valet and receiving the keys to a Ford Fiesta they would need to for travel for the rest of the leg.
9. An equal amount of teams completed the 'Win By a Nose' and 'Don't Slack Off' Detour options in Leg 6.

Answer: False

This wouldn't be a possibility since there were seven teams in this leg of the race. Those who had a black spin on roulette had to complete 'Win By a Nose', which required that they leave Monaco and visit Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption d'Èze. In courtyard of this church, they had to make a bottle of signature perfume and cologne. Using twelve essences (of several provided) they needed to try to match the original recipe given though several of these essences were provided without proper labelling. Steve and Aly, Mike and Rochelle, Laura and Tyler, and Hayley and Blair were stuck completing this task. Those who spun red went to 'Don't Slack Off', sending them up to La Turbie to zipline 2,000 feet above the ground and then walk a slackline back to their starting position. Jelani and Jenny, Jeff and Jackie, and Matt and Ashley rolled this one.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 6 in France?

Answer: Jeff and Jackie

After completion of their respective Detour tasks, teams needed to drive themselves to the Pit Stop at Plage de Passable in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, France. Despite teams leaving the Detour tasks in a different order, Hayley and Blair's navigation skills got them to the mat in first place winning them a trip for two to South Africa courtesy of Travelocity.

It also marked their first win of the race despite several legs of general incompatibility as a team. The last place arrivals ended up being blind date team Jeff and Jackie whose navigation throughout the leg proved to be a major downfall.

They went home in seventh place.
